Finally Starting Mass Effect 2. Insanity Difficulty.

I started playing Mass Effect 1 when it came out and I couldn't really get into it, don't know why. Anyway, I've had Mass Effect 2 since it was released but have been putting off playing it purely because I didn't think it would be right playing the sequel without ever playing the first.

Now, a whole year after the game is out, I've decided to finally play it.

I will keep updates on this after every session, I guess. I'm playing it on Insanity too, so I probably will take a while to finish this as everyone says it's extremely hard, but I don't know if it matters that I'm always playing games on their hardest difficulty - Call of Duty, Halo, Gears of War, Splinter Cell... Everything really. Never really been that stuck on any of the games either, so I wonder if I will still think this is as hard as most people make it out as.

Anyway, here I go. Wish me luck.

Which class do you plan to play?

Posted by Baillie
@JJWeatherman: I'm thinking soldier, I'm hearing it's really, really too hard with another class on insanity. I don't even know the classes though, I'm just making my dude just now. Default Shepard.

Good luck indeed. Shadow Broker DLC is a total nightmare!

@Baillie:
Just finished the insane run last week. Good luck. Make sure you're playing in a clean game (lvl 1, not new game plus) and my team that I used throughout most of the game was Miranda and Garrus. Warp and Overload was great. Oh and I was a soldier, having all the weapons is key. Sniper rifle is your friend.

@02sfraser: Not as bad as I thought, the only hard part I faced was waiting for Liara to unlock the door into the Broker's base.

@Baillie: I've heard that using a sniper rifle on insanity is a good tactic, so as long as you can use one of those, you'll probably be OK. I've started an insanity run but haven't gotten far into it at all. Maybe I'll really start today and we can see who finishes first.  :P

Soldier would be the best choice, especially since this is your first playthrough.

@Afroman269: I haven't played the game before, so there is no New Game +. I'll keep those suggestions in mind.
@JJWeatherman: If I really enjoy this game, I will be playing this game A LOT. I hope you can keep up! :P

@Afroman269: I've seen a bunch of people say that new game + is a bad way to play Insanity. Why is that exactly? Seems like it should be easier.

Actually Infiltrator or Sentinel are probably the two best classes to use in Insanity. Infiltrator for the Sniper Rifle and Cloak and of course Sentinel because of Tech Armor and the ability to cast both Warp and Overload (very useful since pretty much every enemy will have either armor or shields, or both in Insanity mode)

The enemies scale but also you don't keep your upgrades so that make the game a lot harder in certain situations/encounters.

@Baillie: Oh, and always command your AI partners, they are too retarded most of the time and will end up getting themselves killed. Order them to take cover near you and command them to pepper guys with their abilities. I say max out your incendiary ammo and disruptor ammo types if you're going soldier. Since this is your first time, it will probably be a bit more harder because I was lucky and was able to pick an extra ability despite starting a lvl 1 game. I picked fortification which allowed my shields to immediately recharge.

@JJWeatherman: I've heard the difficulty really ramps up, as everything scales to your level? I dunno.

@JJWeatherman: The enemies' stats are boosted to match you if you were starting the game as lvl 30 like I did on my first insane run. Even though you're a high level, all of the upgrades you have are taken away and you have to unlock them again on the ship. The enemies are stronger, but you're not. I suffered my way all the way up to Horizon and gave up, it wouldn't happen. So later I retried as a lvl 1 and it was so much better. Still hard, but bearable.

@spazmaster666: Soldier is still one of the best choices because of the ammo types you have. Incendiary destroys shields and disruptor ammo shits on synthetics and shields. Only thing you miss out is overload and warp which Miranda and Garrus fulfilled perfectly. Just make sure to keep your teammates close or they WILL DIE.

True, Soldiers do have access to all the ammo types but I still prefer Sentinel due to Tech Armor. Also I found that in my Insanity playthrough, my squadmates would generally die quickly regardless of how I used them (even Grunt, who is basically a tank, still died rather easily) so being able to use both Warp and Overload was very useful in a lot of situation. Not to mention that abilities like Warp or Overload don't require precise aiming (Warp in particular since it can curve over/around obstacles) and hence requires you spend less time out of cover as compared to always using your guns.

So then what exactly carries over from an old save? This seems like it's only level. What's even the point?

I found that doing an insanity run during my New Game+ was alot easier then starting fresh.  With NG+ all of Shepards stats are already maxed out and after the first mission you get all of your weapons back.   Having the M-920 Cain and the Revenant LMG from the start made my insanity run so much easier.

Posted by Afroman269
@JJWeatherman: Basically just the upgraded abilities you have, which is why the enemies are boosted. Unfortunately you lost all the stats you have on your armor and weapons so you're just weaker overall. It's really a bad way they did it. Starting from scratch is really the only way to go.  The one advantage of playing the game again though is that you still have the option to pick an additional ability, even on a lvl 1 game. I picked fortification which is a life saver.
15+ Husks chasing your ass down on Insane. Fortification plus shotgun with fire ammo is my friend.

@spazmaster666: What is tech armor? Sounds like fortification because I used that to recharge/boost shields whenever I take heavy fire. Also the only time I had trouble with my teammates were when I was rushed and had to run. I kept like 1 ft away at all times and if there was small cover I would put them behind me. They're powers "magically" worked even though they weren't "in" the battlefield. Also as a way to deal with being out of cover, incendiary helps because it stuns and burns the enemy while you're shooting. Well I know sentinel is definitely competent, and soldier is very efficient. We can all agree that Vanguard or Adept is basically the worst. *remembers lvl 30 vanguard insane run........shudders.

Daww. Now I'm conflicted!

@Afroman269: Alright, fine. I have a lvl 1 Adept run started, but I guess I'll just restart that as s more capable class and choose fortification. I probably won't play a soldier again though. I'll probably go with Infiltrator or something.
Posted by Afroman269
@JustinSane311: Only your abilities are maxed. Most if not all your stats are reset because you have to research them again on the ship. At least on clean playthrough you're not facing boosted enemies.

Tech Armor is similar to Fortification/Barrier except that it is permanent (and you can even stack Fortification/Barrier on top of it if you choose to) until your shields are completely depleted. Basically if you stack Barrier/Fortification with Tech Armor you can more than double your shield strength. As for your squadmates abilities to cast powers even if they aren't in range, I didn't find this out until much later on during my first playthrough so it didn't help me much since the hardest parts of Insanity are during the early game.

@JJWeatherman: Very well, be sure to tailor your abilities and teammates based on the enemies in the mission, like get your overload on for geth missions and have someone who burns fools for missions with vorcha. Good luck, have batman.
Posted by JustinSane311
@JJWeatherman: I found that having my soldier maxed out in Adrenaline, Incendiary and Disruptor ammo, I could take down anybody with little problem, and having a maxed out Geth shield boost was an added plus.  Also with the M-920 Cain I was able to beat the Derelict Collectors ship ambush on my second attempt.

I'm doing it that way, and I've fared fine. I'm in the last stages of the game, so far I've had minimal issues. Reave bonus power really helps.

@spazmaster666: Didn't know that, sounds really good but I'm glad to finally be done with that shit. Won't have to worry about doing stupid hard difficulties until Gears 3 and/or Mass Effect 3's insane mode.

@JJWeatherman: I forgot to mention, use specific armor stuff too which means yes, you will have to wear silly helmets during conversations. I hated it but wearing a stupid helmet helped my shields recharge 10% faster.

I just got to Harvest on my New Game + Insanity run. All this talk is making me want to just start a new level 1 game...

Posted by TheUnpopularGamer

I did the insane run with an adept, it was stupidly hard until I had the option to pick up the sniper rifle then I coasted through the rest of the game.

Posted by davefromabove

Yeah the insane Is made easier with that cool sniper rifle and that DLC assault rifle as well, actualy if you know what your doing with the right skills insane is a breeze I don't remember having a problem.
