I'm pretty certain it will not be called Xbox 720 just for the sheer fact-- as Geoff Keighley pointed out once-- that some consumers may get confused and think the next Xbox could only go up to 720 progressive in HD.

Any name is fine. I call my 360 'the Xbox' when talking about it, and if the next has Xbox in it's name, I'll call that the Xbox aswell.

I agree. The next Xbox being named 720 sounds as retarded as the next GTA being named GTA5. We all know it won't happen, but it's a generic placeholder. Plus people tend to forget the first xbox ever existed.

Nintendo released two systems with the Nintendo Entertainment System name. There were also three main Game Boy systems, with the brand lasting for 19 years (the last GBA game was released in 2008). And Sony has been using the PlayStation brand for almost 15 years, with no signs of stopping any time in the future. When you've got a brand that people know and respect, sometimes you want to stick with that.

The Xbox 360 name came because Microsoft thought calling it Xbox 2 would make it seem behind the Playstation 3. So they threw a 3 into their name as well.
 
720 makes about as much sense as 360 did.

i don't think it will be xbox 720 as some people might think 720 as in 720p for the pixels. they will see ps4 and it will see 1080p then see 720 and think o it only goes to 720p. i think that they will make it something cleaver. xbox^400 or something like that.   
 
i kind of wounder that since the 360 has problems people are going to wait to a while to see if the next xbox  works perfectly. 
 
i have a joke about the 360. u know why the microsoft named it 360? because it goes in a 360 degree cycle, people buy the 360, it breaks, people send it in and repaired, microsoft sends it back. it goes in the cycle again.

I thought 720 was always a joke. It never really occurred to me that someone actually thought that would be a viable name for the next XBOX.

But the 360 is the 2nd Xbox, therefore 360/2=180, 180x3=540, XBox 540 is the logical name for the 3rd Xbox console. "

Xbox Natal. I'm 99% certain that will be the next Xbox's name. Wouldn't mind that, it has a good ring to it, I just hope that Natal doesn't become the main standard controller. I'm fine with some games that take advantage of motion controls, they are quite fun. But forcing them onto every game just limits what developers can do. I cannot see Halo or Half-Life working without a keyboard or standard controller. Maybe for those types of games we will see a controller + Natal combo where Natal is for simple things like voice chat, scrolling menus, and the standard controller is used to actually play the game.

Isn't it just a code name at the moment? If they were to go with 720 it would be pretty funny, but I wouldn't mind it really.

I hear they also named it 360 so it had a 3 in the title so people would know what generation it is.

If there are enough marketing dollars behind it, they can call it the Penis Shrinker and still sell millions.

I've had it with fucking numbers in the gaming industry at this stage. PS 4, Xbox 720, and Final Fantasy XIII. Graphics cards aren't any better,  ATi HD 5870 and the nVidia GeForce GTX295. They've got so many cards now I don't know which is which anymore.

It'll be called the 900 and the first game to come out on the system will be a Tony Hawk game that the only trick is a 900 and you can do it off a curb.

If they called it XBOX 720 it would mislead people to thinking that it can only go up to 720p. Not good.
