@alistercat: I should have been more specific. I don't mind that sort of joke on its own, I really don't. This sort of thing can be a nice homage, a fun wink and nod to the audience. It's just that this screenshot was at LEAST the 3rd time within a 15 minute span that the game made this EXACT same "Hey remember when you could die in adventure games?" joke.

I think you're right though, that maybe this just isn't for me. Oh well. I'm glad so many other people are enjoying it though!

*edit: I will say that the puzzles have been pretty interesting so far, so I may stick with it for that.

*edit 2: I'm a few more hours into the game and I'm enjoying it a lot more. As people have said, they definitely ease off significantly with the "HEY REMEMBER THIS?!?" approach to comedy and let the solid adventure game mechanics speak for themselves.

@bbalpert: You could also watch a lets play to get a feel for it. I've been watching one for a couple of hours of the game. The intro is a lot heavier on the humour you dislike (very direct statements aimed at lucas arts and sierra) but past that it's less frequent. It's very SCUMMy.

Indeed, it's quite strange how they frontload a TON of referential/fourth wall jokes at the start of the game and then there is almost nothing of that for the majority of the experience. I was also slightly put off by it initially but it pretty much goes away so don't worry about it.

I'm glad to hear that it eases up on that stuff later on, because I took the plunge after hearing a few more noteworthy endorsements of the game and...

...this is Hell. I am in Hell right now.

@bbalpert: It is a lot like that, but that's kind of the point. There is a lot of story and intrigue which make up the majority of the game, with those jokes sprinkled it occasionally. If you don't like that stuff then those jokes won't work for you (even though I get a kick out of it) but that's not all it is.

All fair and valid points. Thanks!

One of the issues I've seen brought up in a few Yooka Laylee reviews is how hellbent it is on constantly breaking the 4th wall to joke about how "old school" it is. That the game isn't content simply BEING a fun, colorful throwback, it has to repeatedly remind you, much like a lot of early 2010s indie games drove "8-bit" "retro" pixel art into the fucking dirt.

It's this approach that worries me most. The screenshots and mentions here of references and meta jokes have me concerned that the writing and gameplay will all hinge on "hey I made Maniac Mansion! Remember SCUMM? Put the pulley in the chicken! Adventure games, am I right?"

Or maybe I'm just being way too critical of this thing...

The lengths that they go to make this clearly related to Saints Row without actually saying 'Saints Row' is great.

I think I read somewhere that the game is canonically set in the SR universe.

Hmm, I for one don't think the humour of Ron Gilbert has aged that well. I'm basing that apon the god awful Death Spank (I S Ranked that game) and the Cave. The 'Something of Adjective' is not a joke that bears repeating ad infinitum.

Yeah, this is precisely the kind of humor that I'd consider a dealbreaker for Thimbleweed.

Sorry for the necro, but someone is looking for the same book over at Stack Exchange: http://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/153609/identify-a-fantasy-novel-about-a-boy-who-gains-powers-from-his-mud-character

Well that's reassuring to know that I didn't just imagine the whole thing, haha! Also, I like how someone on THAT thread links to THIS one.
