My Best Of DS List

A list of the games that I think are the best on the system.

List items

 • Throw in the best ideas from every 2D Mario game and a few from the 3D editions and what you get is one of the most refreshing 2D platform experience of recent years. The real hook here is the fact that 2D sprites and 3D models are combined to create a nice cartoon-like atmosphere.

Release: 2006/06/30 | My score: 4/5.

 • As someone who's never played the original Yoshi's Island this was a really impressive game to witness. The vibrant colors, animations and amazing environments are just a joy to play with. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you're sucked in, you'll have a hard time letting this game go.

Release: 2006/12/01 | My score: 4/5.

 • Arguably the best WarioWare game in the series. I didn't care much for the button mashing or screwing around with the Wiimote in a variety of positions. WarioWare is in nature just a great portable game and the touch screen controls just feel like the finishing touch for this game.

Release: 2005/03/11 | My score: 5/5.

 • I've played Tetris dozens of times across a variety of platforms and frankly, every game seems more of the same. Fast forward to Tetris DS, the entire art direction and remixed old school Nintendo tunes make it just so damn addictive. Again.

Release: 2006/04/21 | My schore: 5/5.

 • A remake in the vain of Tetris DS, this highly energetic and fast-paced game is a rush to play. Highly addictive and the bosses are nice additions.

Release: 2008/07/04 | My score: 4/5.

 • A true return to form for Sonic, with the best gameplay and sense of speed the series has seen since the days of the Mega Drive. Combined with branching paths and nice music, Sonic Rush feels like the way a Sonic game should be.

Release: 2005/11/18 | My score: 4/5.

 • A charming game featuring great characters, a great setting and really original puzzles.

Release: 2008/11/07 | My score: 5/5.

 • A simple yet addictive puzzle game that features some really challenging puzzles later on in the game. Works great with the stylus.

Release: 2007/05/11 | My score: 4/5.

 • An entirely new genre which works best with two screens, I haven't played the Japanese GBA version but it must be hell to go in and out of menus all the time. Behold, two screens that instantly evaporate this problem and make possible a game that's both original and inventive. You'll be solving puzzles, pointing out contradictions and have justice prevail. The final chapter is DS exclusive and it shows, making much better use of the touch screen and graphic capabilities of the system.

Release: 2006/03/31 | My score: 5/5.

 • Perhaps one of the most inventive uses of the touch screen the DS has seen, Pac-Pix combines the classic Pac-Man game with puzzle elements and does a great job doing so in this underrated

Release: 2005/05/20 | My score: 4/5.

 • It's moving units and giving commands just like any old strategy game, except for the fact that this time it's all controlled by using the stylus and once you experience that, you just don't want to go back to other ways of playing the genre.

Release: 2005/09/30 | My score: 4/5.

 • Not just one of the best entries in the franchise, but most definitely the best racing game on the DS. It introduced a few new items and has a nice variety of tracks that simply look amazing on the handheld. A ton of fun.

Release: 2005/11/25 | My score: 5/5.

 • It's amazing how much control you have over every aspect of the music you create and you'll be even more amazed at how much fun the whole process is. For me, it's too hard to compose an entire song, but I enjoy making some individual parts and playing around with those. Another inventive use of the features of the DS.

Release: 2008/10/10 | My score: 4/5.

 • As one of the first DS games one could say this is nothing more than a tech demo, but it's so much more than that. Kirby is controlled exclusively by using the stylus and travels through some of the visually most pleasing environments ever seen in a Kirby game. Far too short, but a blast from beginning to end.

Release: 2005/11/25 | My score: 4/5.

 • Great animations, epic battles, an impressive 3D world and dungeons that seem a lot shorter than in say, Final Fantasy II, it's a great game all around. Until the final battle in the castle. This thing is just impossible and incredibly frustrating. To literally spend two hours battling and trying to get as much treasure as possible without any save points whatsoever, and then to be wiped out by the final boss in about five minutes is just too much. After this I was done with the RPG genre until Dragon Quest IV DS came along. This is one powerful game.

Release: 2007/05/04 | My score: 4/5.

 • Not just any other rhythm game, Elite Beat Agents features an original system with great use of the DSs touch screen controls, funny animation and the soundtrack has some great songs on it.

Release: 2007/07/13 | My score: 4/5.

 • One of the best RPGs on the system, Dragon Quest IV brings a ton of charm, a great story and classic random battles, which happens to be my preferred way of playing RPGs. After being completely turned off of RPGs by Final Fantasy III on the DS I hoped this game would bring me back to the genre. Boy did it.

Release: 2008/09/12 | My score: 5/5.

 • A must have for any fan of Final Fantasy's Chocobo character, Chocobo Tales shows off great use of the DSs 3D capabilities, a charming story and exciting card battles.

Release: 2007/05/25 | My score: 5/5.

 • For someone who never played a Castlevania game before, the mix of RPG and platform elements works like a charm.
