There are many bugs with the friend's network at the moment. I have about 10-15 friends on GiantBomb, yet according to my friend's list and blog feed I have none! Hopefully the issue will be resolved soon, as it is extremely frustrating not being able to go to my profile and see who has posted a blog or written a game review, etc.
Basically to answer your question, at this point in time Portal is unavailable as a standalone game on the Xbox 360. It is however, available as a standalone on the PC, via Steam. Right now the only way you can play Portal on your Xbox is by getting the Orange Box. This looks to be changing in the near future though if you want to wait (Portal Still Alive, already mentioned in thread).
I plan on waiting a month or so to see what the general consensus is of the game. If it is mostly good, I'll pick it up. I preordered the $80 Age of Conan collector's edition and had WAR's on preorder as well, but have since cancelled it. I'm waiting this time.
However, the laptop is closing on 16lbs. I don't mean to be a jerk, but if it weighs 16lbs., what is the point of getting a laptop? Laptops are meant for portability and I wouldn't call 16lbs. with a 20" screen very portable. It's going to be difficult finding a case for it and a bag to carry it around in. You could get a desktop with much better specs for far cheaper. Just my opinion!
