For my own entry, I ended up buying R-Type DX for the Game Boy Color based entirely on the box art. It turns out that the game is pretty much just a port of R-Type 1 and 2. It turns out those games are quite good! Though I've never been a shmup enthusiast, so I'm no expert.

Look at how fucking heavy metal that font choice is!

@bluefish: It's kind of a bummer that they've moved away from the "Warcraft: Orcs vs. Humans" and "Starcraft: Terrans vs. Zerg vs. Protoss" mentality of how to represent those games. I missed when RTS games were actually about you playing as a faction, and not just this one dumb character.

And now they assume everyone just wants to suck Raynor and Kerrigan's dick and look at them all day long. Pro tip, Blizzard: your writers kinda suck, and I haven't liked the writing in any of your games since basically Diablo 2. So stop slapping all of your stupid characters on the box art.

I will cry in happiness and hype the day another 2d-style Metroid is announced but it has to be like Super and Fusion. Fusion was good but there's no place for dialogue in a Metroid game. Speak your story through your ambiance of the world.

Pssssh, whatever. Fusion's "dialogue" of an AI telling you what's up from time to time really wasn't a deal breaker. It was totally fine. Metroid Prime 3 occasionally had a Galactic Federation AI talk to you, just to give you the skinny on what was happening on a particular planet when you arrived, or that sort of thing. I don't think Metroid games, on a fundamental level, are somehow not allowed to have any spoken dialogue.

The real deal breaker is Other M's overwrought, melodramatic dialogue, which contained all the subtlety and craft of fanfiction written by a ten-year-old.

Get rid of the repair system. It really doesn't seem necessary.

If there's a fix to be made for that system I say either make repairing cost more again or lower everything's durability by a fair lot so you actually have a chance of running low on it. Durability is used as a way to limit the number of special attacks certain weapons can preform and Crystal Weapons can't be repaired. I think durability as it is now adds more than it takes away from the game.

But outside of special attacks and Crystal Weapons, durability really is a meaningless number. It was the same way in Diablo 2, where the durability only mattered on Ethereal weapons that couldn't be repaired. For a normal weapon, the repair cost is SUPER trivial, and there is almost no chance of you ever completely exhausting a weapon's durability. You're right, it doesn't take away anything from the game really, but it's pointless busywork for the vast majority of weapons at this point.

It would be interesting if they made durability another way to balance weapons. So you'd have really strong weapons that have low durability (but are repairable like anything else), so you either have to use them for the first few minutes once you leave a bonfire and then put them away in favour of a higher durability "workhorse" weapon, or you save your low durability weapon for a boss fight or tough encounter, using it as "the big guns".

I'd buy a Metroid game if it were like Halo and for the Wii U.

I'm genuinely curious what you would want in that game, since as disappointing as it may be, people with your viewpoint are probably the reason the Metroid Prime series sold so well in America and Europe. By all means, what are you looking for a hypothetical Metroid game to have?

I don't think Nintendo will be making a Metriod game when they have the much more recognizable Metroid series at the ready.

You make a very good point.

Though in a weird twist of fate, Metriod sells much better in Japan than it does in the West.

Haha, yeah, remember Fortnite? That game is never coming out.

Also, don't forget Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, which is no longer going to be a Brothers in Arms game, and is also being massively retooled, even though the press seemed to more or less like what little they saw of it.

I think the Infamous games hold up rather well, but I still think it's weird that for a "superhero" game, you're basically just playing a third-person shooter. Your main power might as well be a gun/Iron Man hand blaster thing. One of the first powers you get is a grenade. Not much later you get a sniper rifle equivalent, and a rocket launcher equivalent. Sure, there's super heroey stuff, like doing a ground pound from up above, gliding around, using a "Force push". Still, it's weird how the whole game is basically a third-person shooter.

I don't necessarily think it's a better game, but from the same era, Prototype actually feels more like you have superhero powers, in that in both Prototype games, your guy is basically Carnage from Spider-Man.

So I should play Prototype 2 instead of Infamous 2.

Infamous 2 is miles better. Prototype 2 is a fun power trip, but the story, visuals and gameplay all lack polish. You run way too fast to accurately fight most of the monsters you encounter, which makes the whole combat about jumping and using dive-bombs attacks.

hehe I remember the Prototype vs Infamous debate when the games were first being shown and how everyone said Infamous looked like shit and Prototype would be awesome. I enjoyed both games but it's pretty clear what franchise is in a better state right now.

I feel like Infamous 1 is actually kind of rough whereas Prototype was pretty solid out the gate, so the first two games are actually pretty close in terms of quality.

However, both of their sequels were in the "OK, so you didn't change much or add anything super crazy" category of safe sequels, but Prototype 2 pretty clearly shit the bed in some key ways compared to the thoroughly average and acceptable Infamous 2.

@mosdl: I'd be pretty pissed if they gave Infamous out for PS+ now, because that was one of the games they were giving away after the PSN outage. I wouldn't be alone, I'm sure.

I think you would be almost alone in being pissed, because who the hell cares?

I really don't think those games were meant to be some special unique thing that they'll never give away again. It was just like "OK, fuck, what games are a couple years old and nobody is buying anyway? InFamous and LittleBigPlanet and that Wipeout game? Sure, why not." Then a year or two later when PS+ got better, they didn't even give away Infamous, they gave away Infamous 2, because by that point even that game had been out for a while.

Do not confuse "games you got from PSN outage" with "3DS Ambassador program". I don't recall Sony ever promising that they'd never give those games away for other reasons, whereas Nintendo did sorta say they had no plans to release the GBA Ambassador games.

They should make Resident Evil 4: Dancing All Night.

"Could you imagine the step? IT'S GENIUS!"
