Many people refer to the USA as just 'America'. It's shorter to say "America" than saying "The United States of America". I'm sure most people here understood what he meant.

Why is South America and option if you already have America? And what is this "large hat" you speak of?
He clearly means North & South America. They are two entirely separate continents...but even if he was talking about countries in a where are you from thread, there is no way South America and the US/Canada should be lumped together in one choice.
Perhaps, but considering he completely ignored central America and the Caribbean one would assume he means America as in "the Americas".
