Wii Ditching The Hardcore Gamer?

Wii Music: My Point Exactly
Wii Music: My Point Exactly
When I first played the Wii I played Wii Sports, like a lot of us probably did. I had fun. For 5 minutes. Then I though "Wow they actually went there."
I never was really crazy about the Wii from the start. First off, they didn't change the name to Nintendo Revolution, in my opinion a ten times better name. But where they really lost we was the way it was designed. The lack of Power and HD really doesn't help it's point, my poiunt that they are abandoning the hardcore gamer. If you watched E3 like I did and heard their conference, you know where I'm coming from. Don't get me wrong, I love games like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl to name a few. But when their best selling and most marketed game are a "variety" of minigames, I really don't buy it when they say we care about the hardcore gamer. To point out though, this is for just the Wii. I really like what the DS is doing and I hope they keep it up.
Also I don't want to point with the Wii mote or shoot with the fake Wii gun thing (whatever the heck it is called) which is not very good either to shoot not the prettiest looking Nazis. The PC is there for point and click, its already taken and does a much better job.
This leads me to the only solution I could think of. It may sound crazy, but make a new controller. Not to replace the Wii mote, but to be a secondary for gamers who don't want to play games like Brawl with the Wii mote (I need the Gamecube controller) and for developers who want to make their game expand consoles, but don't want to recreate their game for the Wii. Now the lack of Power and HD will hurt obviously, but its a start. Make an Xbox 360/PS3/Gamecube type controller.
The Wii is making tons of money, especially from the casual gamer. So I see why they are going the way they are going. But don't forget about us Nintendo. Forget the made or in the making Wii motion plus (I don't even know) and make a controller. My family/relative love the Wii. For people who don't game it's so unique and easy to pick up. But please Nintendo don't forget about us, Thanks for reading and post some comments. I want to know what you think about this. Hope you enjoyed it!

The Wii is going through the exact same lifespan as the DS went through.

Lack of support at launch, Nintendo puts out accessible software, new gamers buy it, someone test hardcore waters, hardcore buy it, hardcore games come out left and right. MadWorld will be the divining rod. If it sells, the Wii could take over in a big way.

I think Nintendo has proven that the money is not in the hard core gamer. By focusing on their new market, they make more money. Evolve or die. Nintendo evolved. Do we all like it? No. Can I respect that they want to make as much money as possible? Yes.
I love that the Wii fills little niches though. I don't always want to play "BOOM!! HEAD SHOT!!" type games. So I have my Wii and a 360. Best of both worlds.

I'm a little perplexed as well, but I've found my balance with the Wii. I'm a big golf fan and the Wii delivers in that area... (Tiger Woods, Super Swing Golf), but I want more of the core games. Where's my new F-Zero, another Cell Shaded Zelda, Excite Bike, 2D/3D Mario game worthy of the DS. I still play my Wii often, but I give thanks to my PC and Xbox 360 as well... good gaming to be had, by all that wish it and can afford it.

I do agree.  The Wii does suck big floppy donkey dick in my opinion.  360 is much better and always will be compared to the Wii.  As far as the PS3 goes, I feel it topples over the Wii also.  But looking at the games for the Wii, there are few and I do mean few shiners.  Mario Galaxy and Zelda: Twilight Princess are two of the big ones.  There are a couple of good games for the Wii that aren't poster kids for nintendo.  If the made a lot of there games compatable with the Wii controller, I wouldn't mind playing it more often.  But that just won't happen.  I think Nintendo fucked up when they decided to make the Wii what it is, and they didn't put enough time and effort into really getting into the console.  They just wanted to shit out somthing "New and Fun" for the "Kiddies" and call it a console for "Hardcore Gamers".  This is just another craptastical machine from Nintendo, that in the long run won't really put up a long shelf life.  The DS is good and I feel will have a really good shelf life.  Nintendo needs to stick with hand helds for a while and leave the consoles to Microsoft and Sony, at least till Nintendo can really put out a decent console that can stand next to the 360 and PS3.

Wow, another one of these posts. Yes, the Wii is neglecting the Hardcore Gamer because of crap like Wii Music, the only good game that came out last year was smash bros. etc. etc. I get it.

Honestly, my post makes more sense than anything said on the subject. Nintendo didn't have the power to make a technically competing console, so they went the same route they did with DS. By changing the controller, they have made the console more agreeable to own because it's so different. You can't play a Boom Blox clone on 360, but you can play a game similar to Killzone on 360, or vice versa.

Nintendo will never be able to compete with Microsoft and Sony intelligently again ina  processing power race. So, they're doing the same thing they did to the PSP . . . grabbed that bitch by the neck and started CHOKIN THE SHIT OUTTA IT. Then, all the exclusives were DS. Don't believe this could happen on Wii? lt's already happening.

If Punch-Out!! and Sin & Punishment 2 are any indication, they're not forgetting about the hardcore.  Plus, of the Wii Sports/Fit/Music games, only one is announced... and it's a sequel.

I guarantee that Nintendo will pull out something huge at E3 this year... new Zelda, Pikmin 3, maybe F-Zero or Star Fox.  They're sitting on a ton of awesome stuff.

Are you serious? No one calls you out on stupid shit like this?

The PSP declined for a lot of reasons that didn't involve the DS 'choking the shit outta it'. And one Dragon Quest coming to the Wii doesn't mean nearly as much as you think it does here in the US. Just so you know.

Nintendo has long forgotten about the core gaming audience. Even their more "hardcore" titles like Mario Galaxy (which I love BTW) have been designed to attract casual players.

I get what you're sayin about the controller but if they offered a more conventional controller it would be a step backwards for everything they are trying to represent this console generation. They have the classic controller and the gamecube controller for the VC games and such. But to offer a conventional controller to play the normal wii games wouldn't make sense to Nintendo's current philosophy of making games mainstream. I mean if they did that it how long would it be until the wii mote was phased out of the majority of wii game plans? I don't know maybe it would work. I can't think im tired so don't question my logic! lol.

Ah, what annoys the hell out of me is that this is an opinion that formed  months ago when it was still valid,  but is simply not true anymore.

People have given up on the Wii in 07 and have to regularly make threads like these to justify their decision. At the same time, they don't even play the console anymore. On the one hand, they talk about how the only good games are the few first partys, on the other hand, they don't even try out new games. Have you played Wii Music? Have you played a Point n Click game on both PC and Wii to be able to say which is better? Well I have. World of Goo, Monkey Island 3 and even Call of Duty: WoW I found a lot more enjoyable on the console.
Have you played Zack&Wiki? Have you played Deadly Creatures? Have you played De Blob? Have you played the latest Rayman Raving Rabbids? Have you had a chance to experience an evening with a Wii and three friends? Have you had a chance to play one of the Rails-shooter with those silly plastic handguns? Have you got a good picture of what awaits the Wii in 09? Have you had the chance to try some of the Wiiware stuff?  Have you noticed that SEGA is now basically making the Wii it's lead plattform?

Well, I have. I was also making threads very similar to this one  just half a year ago. That was when I was totally hooked to Lost Odyssey and so disappointed with the lack of proper motion control that we were promised, that I was very seriously thinking of sellling the console.

Shortly after, de Blob was released. Ever since that, I just try out new Wii games. Like Wii Music or Rayman Raving Rabbids TV party, games that don't necessarily score well and that I would never have bought - And most of them rule. I also softmodded the console, which makes it even greater with added functionality. I spent the entire winter rediscovering the Nintendo Wii, and now the 360 is (at times) collecting dust.

A few weeks ago, a friend wanted to have a tour of current gen console gaming. He had a PSX back in the day but since then was a PC-only gamer. So we're not talking about casual here. I brought the 360 and the Wii and we spend a couple of days looking at everything there is. We had a look at some major 360 titles including Gears, Bioshock, Oblivion and such, I showed him the NXE and the multimedia stuff, and online play in Halo 3. I had him play my entire Wii library (consisting of many 3rd party releases), including Wiiware and retro-console emulation (made awesome by softmodding). So all in all, he got a good and unbiased show of both consoles and their library. I also told him what is in store for both consoles in the coming years.

He bought a Wii.

That's similar to my situation Meo, except my last console was a Dreamcast. It's true, I'm coming from a PC gamer background myself and I'm very much enjoying the Wii.

I feel it's mostly other console users that despise the Wii because the "hardcore" western developers have only recently embraced consoles thanks to the advent of online gaming, while the Wii remains mostly Eastern and with other types of games that aren't "in" nowadays, or something like that.

On the other hand, PC gamers aren't seeing on the PS360 much they haven't been experiencing on PC one way or another since years ago, so the Wii offers vastly different gaming for the most part, while for the games that are similar, say a FPS, they get to use a similar control scheme also whch is another plus.

Well, that's how it is for me at least.
