Blitzy: Best of 2009

  • Definitely my favorite of 2009. I lost countless hours to Risen (PC version). It was such a surprise that this game was so damn good. I had played some of Gothic 1 and fell in love, but never ended up finishing. Risen just proves to me that Piranha Bytes' knows exactly what they're doing, and they're doing it differently than other RPG houses. You play Risen and you can see the immediately see the craftsmanship that went into the title; the "by-hand" sculpting of the world, the somewhat clunky but somehow simple and satisfying combat system, and the paced progression that makes you truely feel that your character is gaining power and prestige in the world. I can't think of a better RPG that came out in 2009, or a better game for that matter.

  • This was sleeper hit for me. I wasn't expecting much after the mediocre first game. This sequel befuddled me, how could this title get me so caught up in the story and characters? It's not even an RPG! For whatever reason, it did get me caught up in the world of the "west". The story is told like an epic tragedy, and pulls it off with style and charisma, never becoming boring or over-staying its welcome. This was one of the few FPS games from 2009 that had guns that felt GOOD. They felt like they packed a punch with each round; my brain was convinced that I could feel the recoil of each shot! This is a game that I will continue to revisit because of its unique take on the western shooter and its unique story of loyalty and betrayal that hasn't really been done in video games like it's done here. Techland is a studio to watch in the years to come. Much like Piranha Bytes does with the RPG, Techland does the FPS its own way and does it well.

  • In terms of game-play this game is identical to RE4. But its the coop that brings this one up to one of my 2009 favorites. To this day me and my buddy will get together from time to time and blast dudes as Chris and Sheva. It doesn't innovate, its game-play doesn't take any new turns, and the story still isn't particularly interesting. Having said that, those are not necessarily bad things, Resident Evil 5 was about the co-op and damn does it deliver a co-op experience you can't find anywhere else. If Capcom ever does a Resident Evil came without co-op like this, you can bet you're ass they're doing something wrong.

  • Another sequel to a mediocre first game that surpassed all my expectations. This game had it all, graphics, gameplay, story. I got so tied into the mythology behind it all that a few times i decrypted some of the binary messages myself.

  • The first batman game to not suck. And Batman from the Animated Series is back, pretty much all that needs to be said.

  • The single-player is mind blowing off the top and I loved every blockbuster moment of it. The multiplayer is close to the best a console shooter has to offer. It's just too bad the MP couldn't hold me for more than a month or so.

  • From the dudes that did Red Orchestra, came the most viable alternative to Left 4 Dead. This game rocked the "zombie" meme hard with awesome metal tracks and satisfying firearms.

  • Bigger, Better, and Badder than Left 4 Dead. Upon first play-through it's an intense experience well worth the admission price.

  • The FPS Action RPG of 2009, the one and only. It may have gotten repetitive after 10 hours but the guns kept me coming back.

  • Torchlight brought the rogue-like back to its most basic form, loot baby. It's a game i love to fire up and play for 20 minutes with complete satisfaction. Best traditional Action RPG of 2009.
