You need to complete the main game once first. (I think it was that way on the PS2 and Wii versions as well.)

I should also mention that it was only a disk check not an online activation or anything.

It's a very cool game. I like it a lot myself.  It's a little darker in tone then the other CRPGs you mentioned but I think people who liked those would like the Witcher. Also, definitely make sure you are picking up the "Enhanced Edition" to make sure you get the better English translation and voice-overs as well as load time fixes. 
 
The original version and copies of the game up to version 1.4 (which is the Enhanced Edition's version you're looking at) used TAGES. If you download the patch for version 1.5 it removes the games TAGES disk check completely. So if you download the patch and give it to him on a disk or a USB stick or something it is no longer a concern.

I have listened to it since the 1up days also and I agree about Leahy.  So much whining. I wish there was a way to get John Davidson back with the crew.

Weekend Confirmed is pretty good. It is where Garnett Lee is podcasting now he left 1up and is with shacknews.  It has humor and unusual/interesting topics. My second favorite next to the bombcast.
