I played the everliving daylights out of the original Dark Souls and consider beating it as one of, if not THE crowning achievements of my gaming career.
But Dark Souls 2, man. I dunno. I just can't get the feeling down or something.
I saw the title of this while scrolling down the front page of GB. I wasn't sure what it would be about but I secretly hoped it was about the Mandela Effect because that always creates entertaining discussions.
This is actually geared toward me as well. I bought EO super cheap on steam and played enough during my original allotted time to start to get a glimmer of what the big deal was, but not enough to look past the giant mountain I would have to climb, not to mention paying somebody every month for the opportunity to do so. If I had a chance to get in there and feel things out at my own pace I bet I'd be more inclined to dive head first (or climb head first to follow the previous metaphor, though it doesn't really work that way, unless you want to die. )
If your biggest hangup with ESO is the price, I'd suggest waiting for a sale. I bought the Imperial Edition for around $26 in the Humble Store on Humble Bundle. Just keep an eye out for it and you should be able to snag it for a reasonable amount, then you can compare ESO to FFXIVIXIVIXI personally.
There was an old GOTY podcast where Gary Whitta discussed some of his favorite games of the year (naturally) and one of them was a silly XBOX Indie game called Miner Dig Deep which was essentially a VERY simple 2D ore ming game, almost a version of Terraria before Terraria existed. I picked it up and have sunk countless mindless hours into it while listening to podcasts.
