The DOOM thing is just like Metroid and Mario,

I think (could be wrong!) that most people would say "platformer" instead of "Mario clone", unless there was a very specific Mario angle to it like, I dunno, pipes or hats or something. "Mario Kart" is a genre for sure though, applied to any racing game with weapons.

This was a very good question for these two games as they both express different artforms (music and movies) as video games to mixed success. Purely on the strength of the arguments in the video I would side with Guitar Hero, but on my own I am seeing them as fairly balanced on these terms, which is surprising because I never thought of Guitar Hero as art, and for all intent I never thought much of Heavy Rain at all.

I'm having trouble gauging it because the game sets such high standards for itself (especially with the presentation) that a handful of really minor flaws stand out all the more.

I don't understand how this would work. If I can plug in my own guitar, how does the game know what I'm fretting? It's an analog instrument, is the game just a glorified guitar tuner?

Yeah, it looks like it will be trying to figure out what you're playing from the sound, which has the potential to be really awful and frustrating if the software isn't clever enough to compensate for all the little things that would affect it.

Harmonix gets around this with their pro guitars by, as you say, knowing what you're fretting (buttons on the plastic instruments and fretboard sensors on their custom Squier). The downside obviously being that you can't use your own guitar.

" Oh great more Harmonix dick sucking by GiantBomb. Can't wait to read more about how Rock Band 3 is the best game in the world without very real bugs and problems designed to intentionaly steal money from the fans. "
The only mention of Harmonix in this whole thing that isn't copied directly from an Activision memo is a statement that Rock Band 3 wasn't a massive success.

Yeah, hopefully a bunch more people lose their jobs so that list of things can be slightly tidier.

At the very least we know we can trust Teasdale from his games and presentations etc, but apparently they're doing something new with the Kinect (fast, accurate, sitting down) so there's no telling whether it'll be any good.

Add to that the usual Twisted Pixel flair (awkward jokes; off-putting graphics and art; a lame and tedious compulsion to insert themselves into their games), I'm pretty sure I'll hate it, but the general reception could go either way.

Just in the last year I've been really impressed by Nier and Resonance of Fate, but they both fell right under the radar so I can see how someone looking in on the genre might think there's nothing special going on.

MW2 will always be MechWarrior 2 to me.
