20 Japanese Games to Look Forward to in 2016

I am excited for 2016, as there are quite a few games coming out that I am looking forward to. Most of the games are from Japanese developers or are Japanese-inspired, as they are primarily the games I play. The order of the games are by release date, and for games without a release date it is just in any ole order. I will try to keep this up to date as the release dates get confirmed and/or change. Also, TBA = To Be Announced.

I made a video that shows off gameplay and trailers:

What games are you excited for in 2016?

List items

  • Final Fantasy meets Monster Hunter, this game looks like a good fit for the 3DS. Coming out on January 26.

  • Gravity Rush is getting remastered in HD for the PS4, and it is coming out on February 2. I really enjoyed this game on the Vita. The atmosphere and setting is spectacular, and I think it will look even better in HD.

  • The spiritual successor to Mega Man from one of the original developers Keiji Inafune & co, Mighty No. 9 was one of the earlier larger Kickstarter projects to be funded. I personally backed the project, and I am looking forward to playing it. It comes out on February 9.

  • The next game in the long running Naruto fighting game series from CyberConnect2, this game looks as gorgeous as ever. I skipped out on the last few, but I have enjoyed this series in the past. Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 comes out on February 9.

  • The follow-up to Street Fighter IV, which is only coming to PS4 and PC, is looking to be another entry in the long running fighting game series. I enjoyed IV when it came out, but I did not keep up with it much over the re-releases. It is releasing on February 16.

  • Another entry in the Fire Emblem series features two distinct games. I really enjoyed Awakening, and I am definitely excited for Fates. Fire Emblem Fates comes out on February 19.

  • The third entry in the difficult yet rewarding Souls series (fifth if you are counting Demon's Souls and Bloodborne). I really enjoyed Dark Souls, and I am working on catching up before III. It comes out on April 12.

  • While not directly from a Japanese developer, the style and aesthetic makes me think it is Japanese-inspired. Another Kickstarter project that I backed, I eagerly am awaiting its release. Hyper Light Drifter is set to release in Spring 2016.

  • The follow-up to the 2014 JRPG on 3DS, Bravely Second looks to be more of what was great about the first one (ridiculous name and all). I enjoyed the first one, and I am looking forward to this. It is set to release in Spring 2016.

  • A chibi-fied (cute) take on Final Fantasy, World of Final Fantasy looks to have some potential. Release date is TBA 2016.

  • The next entry in the Persona series, 5 is set to release sometime in 2016. (I can't believe I forgot this initially and did not put it in the video.)

  • The long-awaited next major entry in the Final Fantasy series, XV takes a new approach to combat by being action oriented. I enjoyed the demo, Episode Duscae, a bunch. It was stunning graphically, and the faster paced combat was fitting. Final Fantasy XV's release is TBA 2016.

  • The third HD collection of the Kingdom Hearts games. II.8 continues the tradition of ridiculous and confusing names. Release is TBA 2016.

  • A Platinum Games developed follow-up to NieR, the footage of the game so far looks solid. I'll play it just for the music alone. Automata's release is TBA 2016.

  • The radio silence ended when The Last Guardian was confirmed to be still in-development at E3 2015. The game is the follow-up to the beloved Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. I am very much looking forward to playing The Last Guardian. Release date is TBA 2016.

  • The sequel to the first Gravity Rush. The footage of the game so far looks gorgeous. Release date is TBA 2016.

  • The long awaited new entry in the Zelda series. I think I may have to get a Wii U for this game. Release date is TBA 2016.
