My Favorite Pokemon

I think it's come time for me to decidedly say what my favorite Pokemon are. Why not make a list on Giant Bomb! I've laid out a few rules here so that it keeps the list interesting and varied: 1) No repeats or Pokemon from the same evolution line; 2) Only one Pokemon per type; 3) Each type may only be used once and every type must be selected for use; Well, now that that's out of the way, let's get to the list!

List items

  • Representing the water type and coming in as my all-time favorite Pokemon since the beginning of my Pokemon-playing career, Feraligatr stands as the first, fully-evolved Pokemon I ever used. You see, I grew up on Gold/Silver/Crystal (yes, all three) on Gameboy Color and hardly played any other video games besides them. In light of these facts, it would seem natural that I like something from the second generation of Pokemon.

  • Normal-typed Pokemon don't receive a lot of press, but I LOVE Tauros. Can you imagine why? It's a freaking buffalo! ...okay, he's probably supposed to be regarded as a bull, but that's close enough for me. His high speed and attack don't hurt the cause either. :)

  • I'm not really sure how it happened, but in my file on Pokemon Diamond, I got very attached to a Murkrow that I caught and decided to train it. Next thing y'know, I've got a level 100 Honchkrow! From the dark type, Honchkrow finds a comfy spot at #3. By the way, Honchkrow Super Luck ability Razor Claw (held item) Night Slash = Monstrous force of nature.

  • The story of how I grew to appreciate Magneton starts in the Battle Tower in Pokemon Diamond. In the higher-up levels, things start to get ridiculous in order to knock you out of the ring and I would usually get stumped by a Magneton that spammed shock wave. It was incredible. I went out and found a Magnemite and trained it to a Magnezone. I favor Magneton over Magnezone because Magnezone looks like a spaceship for some reason. Magneton is representing the electric type here and I love him for his ridiculous special attack.

  • In one of my LeafGreen files, I had a Victeebel and he was actually pretty good. It was during this time that I was trying to appreciate grass Pokemon more and I chose the path of Victreebel. Turned out pretty well, I must say. Although Victreebel has entered into this list under the poison type.

  • Aside from looking freakin' awesome, Kabutops represents the rock type on my list for a few key reasons. He's quite a unique specimen and I think that he is interesting as member of a party. Secondly... man, just look at him. So cool. I had a Kabutops in Diamond, but ruined him with an inappropriate moveset. Anyway, I hope to try again someday.

  • I'm not a very big fan of bug Pokemon, but Pinsir would be the one that I would use if I were forced to. Pinsir looks awesome and I've always sort of wanted to use him in my party some day. I have yet to do that, so I can't comment much on the stats or abilities of this Pokemon.

  • I am also not much of a fan of fighting Pokemon either, but I've always liked Hitmonlee. I have used him and he's not half bad. The only downside is that he has next to no defense which makes him very vulnerable to enemy attacks. However, his attack is fairly high and all the different kicking moves are pretty neat. He's just a generally interesting Pokemon.

  • This duck-like fire monster is one of the strangest looking Pokemon from the first generation. I have used Magmar (now evolved into Magmortar) and he is an excellent team member. Somewhat of a balance of the stats, Magmar is a cool fire Pokemon (heh heh) that can burn a few hides. I like him, so he makes the list.

  • I don't usually select the grass starters in Pokemon games, but Sceptile is something else. It was a close race between Sceptile and Venusuar, but Sceptile took the spot on my list in the end. Sceptile is fast, he's got a slick design (somewhat unlike the others in his evolutionary line...), and, most importantly, he is the only 3rd generation starter that doesn't have a double-type! Yay!

  • I say that I don't like the 3rd generation of Pokemon all that much in general, but Aggron is pretty cool. Aggron grabs a spot on the list because of his exceptional defense and making a name for the steel type. His awesome design doesn't hurt, either.

  • In my opinion, 4th generation had a good number of Pokemon that I liked in comparison to the previous generation. Rotom, coming in for the ghost type, is one of the most interesting Pokemon from this generation and he's not half bad as a team member either. The ability to transform into different appliances isn't something that I myself have experimented with, but it is definitely one of the most original ideas that the Pokemon crew have come up with in a while.

  • While his design and commonness don't exactly contribute to Golem's position on the list, Golem is a solid team member that can pack a heavy punch in battle. Everybody remembers when they figured out how to evolve a Graveler - through trading - and that is a very exciting in a young Pokemon-player's life. Golem is representing the ground type.

  • Hypno, a psychic Pokemon, has always been kind of scary to me. First of all, it looks like Drowzee, his pre-evolution, has been dipped in mud or something. Second of all, what is it? It's like a cat with a severed elephant trunk. In any case, Hypno is actually half-bad for a psychic Pokemon and he's probably my most preferred out of all of them.

  • I have never used the ice-typed Piloswine, but ever since I saw this thing in the gripping battle with gym leader Pryce in Mahogany Town and fell in love with it. It looks like a slow-moving mound of fur, but beware - this thing can pack a punch with blizzard or even earthquake.

  • I never use dragon-type Pokemon, but of all the ones available to choose from, Dragonair takes the cake. Why not Dragonite? Dragonair seems to have a certain level of grace and beauty that... disintegrates when evolved into Dragonite. There isn't much more to say here because I have never actually used Dragonair.

  • Finally, I have placed a classic Pokemon that we all know and love. From the flying type, Pidgeot is the essential "bird" Pokemon. Every installment of Pokemon has its "Pidgey" Pokemon. Here's where it all starts. He's at the bottom of the list, however, because I don't care too much for him aside from the fact that he's a decent party member.

  • BONUS. I am entering Ho-oh into the list of my favorite Pokemon as my favorite legendary Pokemon ever. A beautiful fire-bird with a decent backstory (thanks to the recent HeartGold), Ho-oh dazzles me with his wonderfully arranged and colorful feathers and his powerful fire attacks. However, I avoid legendary Pokemon in my party like the plague, so he doesn't see much action on the battlefield.
