Kinect sees dead people!

So I picked up Kinect day one, my first impressions with it where fairly positive for the most part and for playing games it seems like it works pretty well. However there is one other potential use I have discovered for all those Kinect devices in peoples homes. Catching Ghosts!

The reason I’m writing this blog is that the freakiest thing happened to me while taking a break from the rigors of motion control gaming, having sat down just out of view of the sensor but in a position to still see the screen I started browsing the internet and eventually the Xbox went into the screensaver mode which reduces the screen brightness.

Every few minutes I noticed that the TV screen would light up and the Kinect sensor would try and adjust its angle before going back into standby mode, thinking nothing of it and  continuing with my browsing I was content in presuming that this was something the  Sensor did to calibrate for changes in the room.

Then the incident occurred, the camera started adjusting and out of curiosity I looked up and saw that on the dashboard IR input display the screen was lit up as if the camera had detected hands waving,  a little freaked out I got up to check it out and then the straw that broke the camels back the screen flashed purple indicating that it had indeed found a person.

Not pictured is Freaky ass ghost!
Not pictured is Freaky ass ghost!

This happened just for a second and then it was gone but it freaked me out and I decided to check out information on how the IR sensor works and apparently the Kinect sensor incorporates two separate technologies that are typically used by ghost hunters.

The IR sensor for detecting possible anomalous movement and the multiple microphone setup with a system to reduce ambient background noise which creates the possibility of capturing disembodied voices.

As someone who is sceptical of ghosts and ghost hunting I honestly don’t believe what I saw was indeed a ghost, possibly it was a mote of dust or some sort of glitch in the system but I wanted to throw this out there and gauge peoples thoughts, especially the people who do believe in this stuff .

How where the lightning conditions? According to the XBox Support page the Kinect is very particular about how the area should be lit for it to properly detect and track movement. There should be no direct sunlight and players should be lit from the front, like when taking a picture. If the lighting is too poor it could get problems detecting players and motions, and it's not too far fetched it would possibly try to adjust for that by lowering it's noise threshold or something making it more susceptible to making errors.

That's quite interesting actually. I don't know if it was a ghost, but it's freaky nonetheless. Kinect looks interesting as well, so it's nice to see that reception for it is positive.

I'm guessing that either fisk0 is right, or it was a speck of dust floating in front of the sensor. Dust can be extremely reflective under IR light.

Surprised they didn't put this as a feature on the back of the box. Built in ghost detection!

Also, even if you're sitting in a spot where you think you're off camera, you could full well be on camera...that happened to me several times.

That'd be funny if a ghost just popped out of everyone's computer screen just for good measure. Oh, and by the way. This must mean you're living with a ghost, have a nice night sleeping :P.

Imagine that, just playing with your kinect one night, looking at the little box that shows your body so you know what you are doing when suddenly a second figure appears in the frame...

Behind you, immobile

You freeze on the spot, staring at the little square and the figure behind you, not daring to turn around...

And that's when you see it, two orbs of purple light slowly blinking open in the figure's face...

Alright, now you just need to register all your family member with Kinect. Then at a later point when one of them passes away turn on your 360 and stand away. Hopefully it will eventually recognize the ghost of the lost family member and then you can go play kinect adventures together.

That's pretty cool. I hope this doesn't happen happen to anyone who would report it as an actual ghost sighting though, I can see the articles now.

After pondering your case for several seconds I have to say that it is ridiculous to say your Kinect detects ghosts because then they all would detect ghosts.
Clearly yours has actually been possessed by a spirit and is capturing your image and tracking your movements so it can one day take on your form and take over your life.
