My Top 10 Games of All Time (As of 2013)

  • I haven't clocked in over 600 hours in any other video game in my life, and with no regrets about my time spent in Team Fortress 2 I don't know how it isn't my number one game of all time. When I bought the Orange Box for Xbox 360, it was for Team Fortress 2. I didn't know who Valve was, what Half-Life 2 was, and no idea what Portal was. I came for TF2 and learned the rest along the way. TF2 Opened my eyes to PC gaming, and the appeal of TF2 on PC is what brought that drastic change to my life. It's not just my favorite game of all time, it's a watershed moment in my life - and that counts for something too.

The art style on display in TF2 trailers, paired with the music choices and the Meet The Class trailers - I mean, it was such a breath of fresh air to me at the time - and that applies to gameplay too. I've played class-based games before, but I didn't "get" the concept until TF2 showed up. Trying to defend TF2 as my #1 game of all time feels strange because that choice just seems so natural to me.

  • I love the Mass Effect trilogy, or at least the love I have for 1&2 seriously outweighs any negative opinions I have about the entirety of Mass Effect 3. Still, with 60+ Hours in Mass Effect, 30+ Hours in Mass Effect 3, and a whopping 150+ hours in Mass Effect 2 I think it might be clear which entry in the franchise is my favorite. Mass Effect is a marvelous game, and establishes an amazing world - but Mass Effect 2 is where I really feel like you get to really immerse yourself in it all. The improved combat, the darker story and art-style, everything about how the Normandy works is just better in ME2 and although I've played through the game more times than I'd probably want to admit, I'm definitely going to keep going back to this entry in the trilogy.

  • Just Cause 2 is my favorite open world game, hands down. It ranks so highly on my list for the sheer fun value that the world of Just Cause 2 lends itself to. Its not a perfect game, but this isn't a list of my Top 10 Most Flawless games.

You can ride a bus hitched to a 747, unhitch once you reach a significant height and torpedo that bus into the side of a mountain. You can ride a helicopter to max world height, jump out, and freefall your way back into the falling helicopter. You can attach cars to wind turbine blades and watch them just get tossed around. It doesn't always work as awesomely as you think it will in your head, but damn if the experience of Just Cause 2 isn't #3 of all time worthy.

  • Also known as the reason I wanted and Xbox 360, Halo 3 was the sequel to the game that made me get an Xbox Live Account in the first place. The campaign? Kind of whatever. The multiplayer experiences I shared with people over the years of Halo 3? Unforgettable.

I hope beyond hope that these recent rumors of Halo 3 coming to Steam are true, because if there's anything I miss about the switch to PC gaming - it's experiencing Halo with friends. I love the Halo trilogy, and something about Halo lends itself to personal experiences with friends online, and that's why Halo 3 is here at #4 - because my time with Halo 3 online is personally important.

  • I'll admit. I bought Crackdown used to get access to the Halo 3 multiplayer beta. Sorry. But you know what? I came for the Halo 3 beta and stayed for the crazy awesome fun that was Crackdown.

The interesting music, the great art style, that awfully loveable disembodied voice of the Agency, the sheer fact that at some point in the game's progression - running became faster than cars, god. There's So much to love about Crackdown!

Again. Like Just Cause 2, Crackdown is far from perfect - but its so close in my heart for all the fun moments I had during my time with it.
