Childhood games I remember fondly

Some back story: My dad didn't really care about age ratings and stuff, and I got to play a lot of games that were way too complex and violent for my age. I'd like to think that playing those games have made me a better person. I have a lot of good memories of playing games as I kid, and as such I decided to list every single game I remember playing throughout my childhood and even early teen years. Because, you know, it's summer and I have nothing better to do. The games are in no particular order. I add games as I remember them, so the list is always in alpha.

Special thanks goes out to that awesome tech guy who used to come to our house and fix up our PC and install awesome games for me.

List items

  • Just the load-outs and the mapping of the routes your team takes was way over my head, not to mention the squad order stuff. But I do remember shooting terrorists in the face and seeing them bleed to death very fondly. Also flashbangs. Mind = blown.

  • So I only had the first shareware episode, but man Doom was an awesome game. I played through that episode every once in awhile, and I always had fun. One of the greatest games of all time, and one of the few games I can say is truly ageless.

  • Working mirrors man. Working mirrors. For weeks I thought I had to shoot the guy in the mirror. Then I realized it's me. Also boobs. Also DNSTUFF.

  • Wolf 3D is a really awesome game. I have really good memories of playing through it with my cousin. That double chain-gunned boss at the end of E1 was pretty scary.

  • Not knowing anything about the Build engine, I could still tell this game had a lot in common with Duke 3D. But it was funny and you could shoot chickens. Pretty cool game.

  • For years I thought this was the awesome follow-up to Doom people were talking about. Not so much.

  • I got this game because I asked my favorite aunt to buy me a game that had "movies" in it (i.e. cutscenes). This game actually had stock WWII historical footage in it. Not exactly what I wanted, but still a very cool game.

  • All I remember from this game is that you shot fire balls out of your fists. I don't think I really got past the first level.

  • I didn't have a PSOne, and a lot of games on there looked really cool. But Crusader was the game I thought looked equally as cool, if not better than PSOne games, in terms of its graphics. Also, what an awesomely violent game.

  • Good space shooter on the PC, with some pretty gruesome artwork.

  • I remember pulling bat-shit stunts in this game with my cousin. Really crude graphics, but there was really nothing else like it.

  • What an odd game. From the artstyle to the controls. What a truly odd game.

  • As a kid, I knew nothing of the story and the lore of Star Wars. But the name alone, Star Wars, is enough for a kid to want any piece of merchandise associated with the franchise. A really cool game, and a lot better looking than Doom.

  • I didn't really get that far into the game, but like Redneck Rampage, this game benefited from a sense of humour in the world and the Western look. Kids love them some cowboy ass shit.

  • Really good and funny adventure game. One of the puzzles had you eating more and more stuff so you could burp louder and louder. Some of the puzzles were really poorly designed, with trial and error being the only way to solve them. I never finished it myself, but I do remeber trying to recreate characters from the game using playdough.

  • Cool platformer on the PC that was pretty nice-looking too.

  • My cousin went to a gamestore and asked for a scary game. This is what he got. The (now shitty but back then) awesome looking CG intro definitely set the tone for the game. We didn't really get what we were supposed to do in the game, but you know it was dark and creepy and grotesque.

  • The other scary game my cousin bought. Another (now shitty but back then) awesome looking CG intro that certainly set the tone for the game. We didn't really get that far into the game, but yeah, pretty scary.

  • Pretty sad that my experience with Street Fighter was on a PC with a keyboard, but I had a lot of fun button mashing my way through the arcade mode and getting the character specific endings. That ending with Rose in a bath tub? That was like the sexiest thing my seven year old mind had seen, like ever.

Something that's worth mentioning: when I failed a fight, I thought going back and choosing the character that beat me and losing a few fights in a row would "tire him out" and make it easier when I go back to beat him. It always worked. That still amazes me to this day.

  • Really nice looking game. The first instance of a HALO jump, I believe. Blew my mind back then.

  • I played this game mostly in an attempt to overcome my fear of Terminators. Watching the first Terminator movie at a very early age, that scene when the truck blows up but the Terminator is still alive was super scary for me. This game didn't help at all.

  • Shareware games were awesome back when I was a kid, mostly because they were free and you had no obligation to keep playing the game.

Even though now I know Secret Agent was a shameless Commander Keen knock-off (itself a Mario wannabe), I still remember having fun with this stupid game, with its giant character heads.

  • Secret Agent was the spiritual successor to Crystal Caves. Pretty cool and challenging game. I remember failing very badly on a particular level, and scratching the shit out of the magazine demo disc the game came on. Oh, childhood rage.

  • Funny looking game with borderline cartoonish aliens. I remember liking this game. Another shareware game from Apogee.

  • Loads and loads of fun playing this game. Helicopters were like my second favorite thing as a child

  • Same as Jungle Strike, but as a man of Middle Eastern descent, I could relate to the oil barrels in the levels a lot more.

  • Totally amazing action game. Wasn't really a fly sim, even though I did use a joystick to play it. Much more of a shooter, but as it says on the box, it had TOTAL 360 3D ACTION!!

  • I played the PC version. When you jumped on the camels, they burped. That is really funny for a five-year-old.

  • Also played the PC version. Pretty unique platformer, in terms of how the levels were laid out.

  • I didn't have a NES or a SNES or an N64. But I did find the bootleg pirated PC port of Super Mario Bros. on a magazine demo disc. Really cool game, even though it wasn't the real deal.

  • I remember getting stuck very early on, but I was into the looks of the game.

  • Another shareware shooter that got played by me. I remember digging the art-style back then.

  • Some Russian FPS that wasn't anything special, except it had fucking deformable terrain. You launched a rocket at a rock underwater? Guess what, it fucking dented. Until you looked the other way and then it bounced back to normal. But still, pretty cool.

  • I never had a Genesis, but my cousin (who lived two floors above me) did. So while I technically didn't have a Genesis, I got to play one almost everyday. And you can't spell Genesis without Sonic. I really remember having loads of fun playing this game... or watching my cousin play this game.

  • But Golden Axe was a co-op game so I could join in the fun!! My favorite character was Gillius who had the special power of making meteors rain from the sky. Really cool game...

  • ... but Golden Axe wasn't the best co-op beat 'em up on the Genesis. That award would go to Streets of Rage. I can't really tell you how many times me and my cousin played through this game, but what I can tell you is that I can still remember almost every single level in this game, this many years later.

  • I can't remember why my cousin got this game, but it wasn't all that bad.

  • We borrowed this game from a relative, I think. And boy, did it kick our asses. I can still remember the motor-thing level.

  • Another borrowed game. I really dug it back then. Really cool art-style.

  • I rarely bought full-priced games as a kid, but this was one of them. I got this for my 7th (or was it 9th?) birthday. What a truly shitty game. It was one of those cases that you kind of forced yourself into liking the game because you spent money on it, but man this was shitty.

  • I never played this game game per se, but I did receive the exact three games on a compilation disc for my 7th (or was it 9th?) birthday. I'd heard all this stuff about how gruesome MK was at school, so it was really cool to finally get to play it. I remember having a lot of fun playing UMK3 specifically.

  • Played a lot of this game on the PC. Very cool puzzles, and a great sense of humour. Even as a 5 or 6 year old, I found a certain charm in this game that was really rare in games.
