A new album is up and, like Warlord from a while back, it's a nostalgia bomb. Spiritual Beggars evoke all the big acts from the 70s - Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Uriah Heep and so on. Lots of organs, tambourines and cowbells. If I concentrate hard enough, I can almost smell the weed. Or burnt toast, I can't tell.

@euandewar: I'm not a huge fan of Deafheaven. Their first album was ok, I found it a little uninspired. I like the genre though so I'll probably get Sunbather eventually.

I didn't like any of their prior albums, but Sunbather is pretty fantastic. It's very much different from anything they were doing before, and it's got a much more unique sound to it now. There were certain elements that reminded me of Liturgy's Aesthetica, but it was more in subtle attributes than general tone or abrasiveness; they're both still very different albums. A lot of the songs seem to have some post-rock influence, so if that interests you, forget the old Deafheaven albums and give it a listen.

Liturgy, huh? Have you read Hunter Hunt-Hendrix's black metal "manifesto"? Try reading that without having your brains leak out your eye sockets. Not a fan.

2 new albums for you guys to check out.

Quebec black metal is really having a killer year. Monarque, Neige Eternelle, Csejthe have all come out with good albums and I'm really looking forward to Gris and Sombres Forets' new stuff in July.

Everyone should listen to Church of Misery. Their song titles and lyrics are inspired by infamous serial killers like Ed Kemper and Albert Fish. I love reading about serial killers. Well, maybe love is awkward way of putting it, let's just say I'm fascinated by them. Add some really awesome Sabbath-inspired doom and you have a band that was practically made for me. I recommend all of their albums except Vol. 1 which, as far as I can tell, is a re-recording of songs they made before they made their first album, Master of Brutality. Regardless of its origins, it's not their best.

Two new albums are up.

Satan are one of those bands that seem to repel vocalists. They were Satan when they released their debut, Court in the Act in 1983. In 1985, after a vocalist change, they changed their name to Blind Fury and released Out of Reach that same year. Later in 1985, they dropped the new singer and became Satan again with a new vocalist, releasing Suspended Sentence in 1987. Just one year later they would change their name to Pariah and release 2 consecutive albums, The Kindred and Blaze of Obscurity(1988 and 1989, respectively). They disbanded shortly thereafter, reuniting in 1997 with a (surprise!) new vocalist. They released Unity in 1998 before disbanding again. Then, in 2011, they came back as Satan and in 2013 released Life Sentence with the original lineup that made Court in the Act so many years ago.

I think Life Sentence is easily some of their best work, regardless of the band's name. Court in the Act is far and away #1 with Out of Reach, Suspended Sentence and Life Sentence all being about equal for me. It's really amazing that through so much uncertainty and lineup changes they were are able to keep the quality as high as they have over the years. Unity is pretty meh but the rest is good to great heavy metal.

Check out Satan/Blind Fury/Pariah today!

@pontiuspyrite: Once again, someone's job does not make their statements factual or non-factual. Furthermore, 'citations' are not required in order to prove whether or not something logically follows, mathematicians do not need a reference to prove 2+2 equals 4. You appear to be disagreeing with the statement that context defines hate speech, not merely the words used. Instead of appealing to authority, demonstrate how a word judged to be hate speech supersedes the context in which it is used in determining whether the speaker was acting out of hate. Demonstrate how a person using a certain word shows his hatred of a group, independent of the context in which the word was used.

It takes quite a logical leap to think that people preemptively defending themselves from verbal abuse and mischaracterization necessitates a disdain or hatred of the nature of the mischaracterization, rather than the act of the mischaracterization. That I expect someone to accuse me of being X, when I am not X, says nothing of my feelings towards X besides the expectation of being accused of being X. Hibbert may or may not homophobic, but the statement that he is not gay is not homophobia, anymore than the statement that someone is gay is heterophobia. I do find it ironic you would point to 'subtext' while denigrating the importance of context.

Personally, I think Ryan Reynolds is incredibly fucking attractive. Those abs? Christ! But I'm not gay, lest you think I was by my prior statement. And by your standards I have contributed to the culture of homophobia by denying that I'm a homosexual.

Funny how you think simply complementing a man's looks can be construed as homosexuality. When women compliment each other's looks do you think they're lesbians?

This is shit 14 year old kids say when they touch their friend's ass by mistake. Drop the act, it's a fucking stupid saying. Champion for something more deserving, you look like a fucking tool.

A new album is up. But wait, I just added a new album a few days ago. What's going on? Warlord is what's going on, motherfuckers and I couldn't wait to share it. I've never heard of these dudes before but their new album is completely fucking awesome. Let me paint you a picture:

I put on track 1 - 70,000 Sorrows. I'm 13 again. I'm in my best friend's back yard. We're blaring Manowar, air guitaring and screaming the lyrics. Time travel truly is possible, friends, this proves it. Catchy riffs and choruses, soaring guitar leads and melodies, vocal harmonies that practically beg you to join in. This is the music I grew up on, released in 2013. And it's so fucking good.

If you like old fashioned heavy metal at its absolute best, you need to get The Holy Empire. You will not be disappointed, I guarantee it. GO LISTEN

@smtdante89: You're welcome! I realize my tastes might be a bit extreme for some people(don't know how to say that without sounding pretentious) so it's good that the comments are providing alternatives for people.

"However, I did somewhat like Risk and The World Needs a Hero as well, so perhaps my opinion isn't necessarily the best."

Nonsense. If you like the new Megadeth(or whatever album), don't be ashamed to admit it out of fear of reprisal. Your opinion, regardless of its context, cannot be made invalid, no matter what other people say about it.

That might not have been totally relevant to your post but I see far too many people who are afraid to show their true feelings about anything because they're afraid people will reject them. I struggled with it myself in the past. I say enough! Speak your mind, no one else can do it for you!

@euandewar: I'm not a huge fan of Deafheaven. Their first album was ok, I found it a little uninspired. I like the genre though so I'll probably get Sunbather eventually.

New album is up. I really like this one. The fact that it's a debut is stunning. Bands usually need 1 or 2 albums to find their sound. Lychgate come out guns blazing, sounding like seasoned pros, easily incorporating several styles without sounding gimmicky.

Seriously cannot recommend this album enough. It's only 9 bucks on Amazon - GET IT!
