100 Games that left an impact on me

This list is of all the games that impacted me in some significant manner. Some games made the list due to how they influenced my taste. Some made it due to how much I enjoyed them. Some made this list to sort of highlight how my tastes have change (and maybe by extension, how the industry has changed.) Some made it in for how awful they are. Thankfully I remember more positive impacts than negative ones :P I can probably spin an entire conversation about any one of these titles.

Note: Out of order, I think I will keep it that way. I also fully intend to put descriptions for all 100 of them, though I am still debating how long those will end up. Most of the stuff written is reminders for me when I explain their significance. Remember the order of the list is subject to my shoddy memory! The self-imposed statute of limitations for games to be placed on this list is 1 year after I have played them. This is so I can be sure the game has impacted me and I'm not just buying into the new game hype that sometimes get me.

List items

  • Has my favorite music tracks out of any video game. Also probably one of the hardest games I completed considering I unlocked everything without the arcade machine. This is probably the game that has the fastest, tightest, and most visceral gameplay I have ever experienced.

This was the game that prevented me from trading in my Gamecube (along with melee) and in all actuality kinda makes me believe that a system can truly be worth buying just for one game. I just didn't expect it to be this game back when I got a Gamecube for my birthday.

  • Got me playing DDR like a mad man. This was the gateway drug for really expensive peripheral controls ($80 dance mats). This could actually be something that the new generation of gamers may even lose out on as DDR has been on the decline in consoles and arcade machines are already an endangered species.

  • Quite the iconic game for me, it was the first downloadable game I got. It was also the first indy game that I purchased and really showed me that simplicity is such a lost art in game design these days.

  • The pinnacle of the Rhythm fad that guitar hero started. Probably some of the best live coop I have ever played.

  • As for subconsciously influencing me the most, this game probably takes the cake as it is one of the first games I played. Probably one of the best places to start playing video games.

  • Got me into RPGs. No lie, when I started playing FF7 I went, "Huh, this plays kinda like Pokemon!" XD The way pokemon essentially teaches hardcore JRPG mechanics to 8 year olds is genius on a diabolical level.

  • Probably the best shmup I have played. I think this counts as a bullet hell; the thing that gives me pause with that label for this game is that you can absorb the bullets.

  • This came out during a bleak time in fighting games. Probably played this fighting game more than any other.

  • While I played and loved the first and third, the second really was the peak of the series. Also avoided some of the melancholy/weirdness that comes with the introduction of a lifespan in 3.

  • probably my favorite RPG. Came out during my senior year in highschool so it was a nice ending note to those years.

  • Vampire savior. Ended the main series on a high note at least. PS1 version is pretty legit. If one looks on the surface, the game does not look that good. The fighting system is really good though. The PS1 version came with a weird create a pallet of a character mode, which made for a fun way for my friends and I to compete.

  • Most likely the very first game(s) I played. I have been told that I used to walk up to the front of the TV with the light gun when I was three to play Duck Hunt. Probably subconsciously fueled my love for Time Crisis years later. I don't remember anything from those days though :P

  • Only game off the top of my head I have beaten on three different systems. Pretty good length, every time I want to go through the game, I can just beat it in an afternoon.

  • Some would argue third strike is the technically better game. To me CvS2 provides the best balance between the technical hardcore side of fighting games and approachability for people who like fighting games but are not necessarily pro.

  • My favorite Final Fantasy. Beat Wiegraf in the most awkward ass backwards way imaginable.

  • This is NOT a fighting game. everyone played this. noncompetitive people got fierce. sparked the biggest debate on what was a fighting game.

  • This game probably justified my purchase for a PSP. Essentially boils down to a portable Beatmania. Addicting stuff here.

  • Fighting game of choice for the majority of the people with a PS1. Also pretty approachable.

  • Played it once without getting to the fifth stage, did not appreciate it. Replayed and completed it many years later and I understood why this game is highly regarded. Synasthesia, what a concept.

  • Basically gave me the ABCs of Dual Stick control. :P I remember this really fun and really easy to find everything if you were willing to invest the time in it.

  • SNES version. Me VS Cousin. My introduction to real gnarly competition in fighting games.

  • I really like the ending to this game. Heck the entire playful campy atmosphere is to this game's benefit (something I feel the series lost as it progressed).

  • Came out when I was pretty cynical about Mario games; Super Mario Sunshine will do that to you. This is basically unbridled joy the game.

  • I dunno if its just me, but I could swear the controls were tighter on this than the 64 version.

  • Last good Sonic Game. First game I got on gamecube.

  • only fighting game link was in. This caused a lot of my friends who never played fighting games to pick this game up. The easy mechanics lead to everyone having a good time.

  • Ironically probably the first fighting game I actually owned. XD Pretty bad compared to Street Fighter, but the clay-mation holds its charm in the SNES.

  • And this is the first game where I went through the whole Denial/Sadness/Anger/Acceptance cycle due to how bad it was in comparison to GGXX. Sadly the rest of the series would follow suit. Never had I seen a series take as big of a nosedive as guilty gear had.

  • Favorite Zelda game

  • Was my first entry into Final Fantasy. Played waaaay later than most people did. Thought it was enjoyable but I didn't freak out over Aeris's death. Partly because I thought she was gonna come back later. She never did. The legacy this game has left really sours the memories.

  • Made me keep my DS for a lot longer than I would've. Made great use of the stylus.

  • If its one thing that I'll give Suda51, is that he knows how to put on a spectacle for the player. While the gameplay is lacking in places, the entire atmoshpere of the game really set it apart from its grimdark or colorful family friendly peers.

  • This game marked the end of the Hard Ass era for me. I played this game on hard mode just to bolster my "Oh yeah, I'm such a tough guy gamer" attitude I had back then. Hard mode in this game was balanced around the assumption that you played this after you got some goodies on normal mode. I went through about 3/4 in when the difficulty simply was too much for me. That was when I learned an important lesson: the "super tough guy" attitude of going into harder modes just for the sake of it prevented me from having fun.

As for the game itself, its pretty good though a bit forgettable in parts :P

  • I enjoyed the spectacle of it.

  • Best 16 bit shmup. Slowdown actually a good thing on this game.

  • The GTA of my era. I really do think the cultural impact from the first two Mortal Kombats were far more visceral than GTA.

  • Made me buy a DS

  • Proved to me the Wii was not gonna flop. And it proved it over and over again.

  • I remember renting this a lot. First puzzle game I really got into.

  • I remember renting this a lot. Gave me a soft spot for bomberman.

  • First four player multiplayer experience. Arcade style

  • SamSho2 is the better game. The original is what I played though at the local Pizza shop.

  • one of a trio of N64 games that made the system worth it

  • one of a trio of N64 games that made the system worth it

  • one of a trio of N64 games that made the system worth it

  • My favorite final fantasy battle system. XIII cam close to supplanting this, but the variety of classes in X-2 coupled with just the right amount of speed makes X-2 better.

  • As I played this without a guide, I got a really bitter sweet ending here. I lost a lot of good characters that were built up excellently. The way the the story was told and how you influenced it, was well executed.

  • Really has a light-mech feel to it. Has the vic viper in it so you know this game is at least going to be aright. While MGS4 does all the Kojima insanity to a higher degree,

  • This is quite good with the Guncon. Literally made the one at the arcade only really worth playing if you wanted the recoil from the gun :P

  • Whereas Zone of the Enders was all about the light, high speed space drama that only Kojima could make, Armored Core was all about the big meaty feel of these hulkaloid pieces of metal that had endless customization options for you. The story is way more by the books (you're a mercenary for hire) but if the sims have taught me anything; I am a sucker for customization.

  • Sheer brilliance on a social point of view.

  • High falluting indie game here.

  • The start of the Hard Ass era. Still a good game with crisp controls.

  • The game that convinced me that shooters weren't half bad.

  • WORST ENDING EVER. I remember a friend buying this because I lent him Brave Fencer Musashiden and he really liked it. After he lent it to me and I beat this game, I felt really bad that he bought it.

  • Really, my version of TF2 for the better portion of 4 years.

  • The only RTS series that I can play and enjoy. dunno how Blizzard does it, but they make me enjoy a genre I really have no love towards.

  • The game where I realized that the Kingdom Hearts series was no longer for me. Keeping consistent with the first though, the ending was actually good. Even better though, and quite unlike Square these days, it provided closure.

Unfortunately that means they make prequels Star Wars style instead D:

  • Probably the only fighting game series whose complexity just goes way over my head. When people complain that fighters these days are just way to complex, I look at this fighter and I can totally relate to what they are going through. The newest virtua fighter finally clicked with me though.

  • 3 months of playing this game made me realize that MMOs are probably just not for me. Then again I played this wrong; I tried to solo EVERYTHING. Then again, I need a reminder of me and MMOs not getting along every so often.

  • First Street Fighter game I owned. I learned all my basic motions here. Combos and Common sense came much later :P

  • First entry to KoF that I played extenslively

  • Learned what SNK boss syndrome was the hard way.

  • My first introduction to western style RPGs. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • Played multiplayer with a friend on this. Thank god for wireless mutliplayer because playing a fast paced game like this while tethered is not good :(

  • Most fun on the PS1

  • This really should have been what Konami should've released a long time ago instead of annual DDR sequels. Thankfully for the consumer, this is free.

  • There was a kiosk with PS1 demos at target. I would play Chop Chop Master Onion's stage nonstop. Damn catchy soundtrack. Also is likely the first rhythm game I played.

  • World Tour. Played a lot of good rounds with friends.

  • Probably the only instance when a series moved away from an arcadey like feel (Tricky) and got better for it.

  • Warped my expectations of MMOs before I played them. The series has an interesting story premise and the build up to the end was pretty good. A lot of the e-mail interactions were also pretty ahead of its time.

That being said: DON'T PLAY THIS SERIES. The series was really a product of its time and since then people have much easier access to MMOs.

  • Played about 3 years after it came out. probably the flashiest fighting game I have ever played while still being somewhat good.

  • This was the reason you owned a Dreamcast with 4 controllers. In all honesty, probably the game I had the most fun with on the Dreamcast.

  • The game that would frighten me to the point of not playing horror games anymore. I am a pansy I know.

  • Gave me a really bad first impression on shooters.

  • Probably the worst game with the best story.

  • What a depressing game. The story is a really messed up tragedy, which is something you don't see a lot. The problem here is that the story is paired up with really bad gameplay. At least its an interesting case study on how to do a story without a single likable character and still manage to come off as interesting.

  • Releases the inner hard ass in me. after dying a couple hundred times and getting salty I remember why I don't play hard ass games anymore XD

  • Showed me the lighter side of indy games.

  • The game itself is not bad at all if you're into hardcore shmups. What really makes this game great is the voice acting. It is so bad, it's funny.

  • Gave me hope for the MK series.

  • First time I probably genuinely hated a character in a game. (the villain)

  • I really really wanted to like this game. Everything about this game is soooo good except for one the actual gamer part. They just recycled too many assets across all the characters which made grow tired of the game.

  • Probably the closest I have ever gotten my casual friends to play a real fighter. Since no one really practiced, the fights were actually intense with great shout out loud moments happening.

  • Monster-Oc! I remember enjoying this game.

  • You can replace final fight with this.

  • What a bizarre game. Fitting as the PS3 launch was very very bizarre. Made Six axis actually look legit since it wasn't overused.

  • I have nothing against this game, really I don't. The story and dialogue are actually really good. Actually playing this game though made me realize that the era when I liked Strategy RPGs was long gone. It was just too complex for me I guess.

  • My first PC game

  • My first mmo
