I've definitely been able to teach friends with little to-no sports game experience enough to play with-in half an hour. Just using the face-buttons might be a good place to start, but the right stick stuff is, at least for me, surprisingly intuitive once you gets your hands on it (even it if sounds a little bit more difficult to articulate in words).
There's a few modes where you can practice with one player or 5-on-5, but just getting in a few quick games against the computer is probably a good place to start too.
