'Sick' Games.

This is not a blog about games which are 'sick' in the wrongness sense, no, this is a post about games that you play when you're ill, sick, feeling shite, or just skiving off work/school/whatever. Sorry if you feel letdown by the title already. So, I recently wrote a review for The Saboteur, in which I stated that this is likely to become my new 'sick' game.

A sick game, from my experience generally comes from a game that has so much stuff to do in it, that you can't be bothered to rinse all 200+ items you need to find or whatever the objective may be. Most recently for me, this took place in the form of Assassin's Creed. Yeah, you guessed it. Those damned flags. During a long, bedridden week with some severe flu, this July or August gone ('09) I popped AC1 into my 360, and spent a good 7 hours going through, finding all those flags, and Templars, four of which glitched out, didn't appear, so I had to go through their 60 locations again.

Similarly, Crackdown had this sickness effect, I've spent several sick days trying to beat the races, and collect those cursed orbs, I believe I am just one away from collecting all the Agility orbs, and about 100 from the hidden orbs.

The Saboteur is likely my new sick game simply because of the frankly insane amount of tasks to do. I am nowhere nears destroying all the Nazi stuff, finding the crates, the cars, let alone finishing side quests and the perk trees.

But what makes a sick game? For me, it has to fulfill three criteria:

  • It has to be fun.
  • It should, ideally, have mad collectibles.
  • It shouldn't be too stressful to play through and get these collectibles (you aren't well, after all, and we don't want you getting any worse).

This got me thinking - am I the only person who has games purposely left unfinished, knowing that finishing the game can be achieved with a few hours dedication? Or am I not as mad as I thought?

If I'm not mad, what games do you play to take your mind of vomiting, or whatever your ailment is? If so, for what reason (other than mind occupation), gamerscore? High scores? If I am mad, tell me so.

(Also, I thought Batman: Arkham Asylum fits in this category, but I already have all the riddles solved).

Yeah, I didn't mind it actually. Sometimes it was a bit too winky-noddy, there were some obvious gags and the Blade Runner homage was maybe laid on a bit thick. For the most part, however, it was a very amusing and tasty slice of meta-pie.

Series 7 for me was just a disappointment after the lovely streamlining of the previous outing, which is one of my favourites. After waiting so long after the series 6 cliffhanger, series 7 just seemed muddled, bloated and trying a bit too hard (especially with their grand visions of making it more film-like). And although I wasn't in love with the oldschool version of Kochanski, I didn't like the new Kochanski much either. Her character settled in better in series 8, but I just wasn't feeling what she was supposed to bring to series 7.

I had the flu a couple weeks before Christmas and managed to watch the entire 5 series boxset of Peep Show in about 3 days. It was great. For games.... I don't really play games when I'm ill. I'd rather watch daytime TV and drink endless cups of Lemsip.

Oooh yeah, this is a good one. Just good to grind through, trying to boost your max health so you can take on the later levels on a harder setting. So many times I've sat there, leaving the anthills open so I can mindlessly blast wave after wave of the buggers, just to loot the power ups.

As an aside, I'm in the middle of playing Red Faction: Guerrilla, and it feels weird to be fighting the EDF.

I think I just play puzzle games if Im sick. Actually I would most likely just watch some shows on Hulu until I fall asleep.

I don't deliberately leave games until I'm sick as I'm rarely taken ill. But when I was down with flu for a week I started playing Mass Effect (as detailed in my blog, pluggety plug plug plug). It was perfect and got me through the woozy, couch-ridden days.

I leave many of my DS games unfinished not only for sick days but for road trips, plane rides, and waiting rooms. I have The world ends With You, the second and third Phoenix Wright games, and Children of Mana sitting on my night table waiting for one of these occasions. Of course, I could pop in the second Phoenix Wright or The Worlds End With You and finish them both off in a few hours but I'd rather wait for one of the situations I mentioned above to knock one of them out.

I've got to say, playing a game is the last thing I want to do when I feel sick. I just want to watch something mindless if watching something on a screen at all.

I don't know, the only time I ever get sick to where I have to stay in bed, I'm so sick that all I can do is lay their miserably, or try to  sleep. Playing a game is completely out of the question.

Well, I played the heck out of Civilization Revolution the last time I was sick. I got most of the achievements, but now I never have any intention of playing it again. Not that I disliked it, but I played it so much that it was starting to drive me nuts. Even the sound effects were really getting to me.

I definitely like games that don't require fast reaction times.  I like sports games and grinding in an RPG is good and I simply lower the difficulty on some.

Does anybody else get the thing where youll watch a series/film or play a game when your ill then whenever you go back to that thing it makes you feel physically sick, for example when I was ill for two weeks I watched all of Red Dwarf and now I cant go back and watch it again because it makes me feel sick.
I try to stay away from new games for that reason, like when I had swine flu I decided to get The darkness knowing that it was short and that I wouldnt play it after completing it

When I'm sick, playing video games just worsens my nausea.  I might play small casual games, like PopCap-style titles, but never anything else.

Also... WHAT THE HELL DOES CANDLE JACK DO TO HIS VICTIMS WHEN THEY SAY HIS NAME?!  I mean seriously... everytime I ask wha--

Baldur's Gate worked out really well for me when I was sick for a week. The ability to pause the game at any time and do things at your own pace is perfect when you're sick.

I think Saints Row would work really well for this purpose too. I just started the game and it feels like there's an overwhelming amount of stuff you can do and collect.

Oh, and Heroes of Might and Magic 3 would be perfect for this as well since it's a turn-based game.

I have a few in mind myself. You nailed it right on the head with The Saboteur! god there is so much to do in that game.

  • Grand Theft Auto 4 is definitely one for me. I know it should be a casual game that you play whenever, but i really only played it when i was off sick for about a week. So many damned pigeons! ^_^
  • Overlord 2 is another.
  • Burnout Paradise is one i think i have actually Only played when i was sick. No wonder i always had a fast paced heartbeat and bad headache when i played when sick. I really should play it more though because it's pretty awesome.
  • Dead Rising is also one. Probably because when I'm that sick i feel like a Zombie, adding to the effects of the game-play.

mm, i also have "sick games". Red Faction comes to mind. I can spend hours mowing down all the high value EDF buildings, propaganda and EDF supply crates. it's not too difficult, and it's a hell lot of fun.

I like to play open-world games since they don't require much thinking on my part whilst I lay on my bed.

I like to play SNES games when I'm sick. One time when I was younger, my father rented me a SNES and Super Adventure Island, and since then I've played that game when I'm sick.

well i don't purposefully leave games incomplete, but i definitely have some "sick" games of my own. as you said, assassin's creed and crackdown were great examples. i also recently added uncharted 2 to my list. i'm trying to collect all of the treasures and unlock all of the trophies in that game.
