Why doesn't Xbox Live work like iTunes?

My 360 Elite got the RROD earlier this week, so I called Microsoft support (it's still under the extended warranty), filed the claim, etc. The next day, it was working again - no RROD - and has been working fine since.
However, since I couldn't bear the thought of not having my 360 for 2-4 weeks (I just downloaded a ton of DLC for Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Bioshock 2), I went ahead and ordered a new 360 slim from Amazon before my Elite started working again. I'd been considering buying a Boxee box, but I figured that I'd just use my repaired 360 as a media server in my bedroom instead. I already use PlayOn, and I was thinking of setting up the Boxee software on another PC and trying it out with my consoles to see how it works. Anyway, it got me to thinking - why can't my Live account cover multiple consoles?
iTunes is a total kludge (why can't you sync your iPhone or iPad wirelessly yet? Apple is living in the Stone Age, but that's a different topic for another forum), but at least it allows you to tie multiple devices to a single account. Having to put my profile on a USB key and move it from one console to another when I just want to watch movies on Netflix is a semi-big pain in the ass. Is it all about piracy? I'm assuming the thing that Microsoft is worried about is that if you could use multiple consoles and tie them all to one account, then maybe you could copy unlocked XBLA titles to 5 consoles via one Live account and then give/sell those extra consoles to a few friends and they wouldn't have to pay for them. Is that all there is to it?
Since Microsoft is always talking about what a great "media device" the 360 is, and is continuing to add services like ESPN, etc., you'd think they wouldn't want to discourage people from buying multiple consoles. After all, having to go back to having a "sneakernet" by physically moving your profile around is a pretty big downside to buying additional 360's.
Is there something I'm missing here? Is there anything Microsoft could do to make this problem go away? Why can't I just have a working copy of my profile on multiple 360's that allow me to sign in on multiple consoles at the same time as long as they're all coming from the same IP address?
