My Top 10 PC Games of All Time

In no particular order, here are 10 PC games that have resonated with me in one way or another over the years.

List items

  • For me, this was an absolutely mind blowing experience. Combining 1st person shooter mechanics with RPG advancement, coupled with an engrossing storyline and the ability to influence the storyline was something I'd never experience before. I was well and truly hooked.

  • The first RPG I'd played from start to finish (playing through to the end of a game is something of a rarity with me unfortunately). The fantastic characters and witty dialogue did it for me. A game I still own and play through from time to time.

  • The game of my childhood. I remember playing through this with my brother whilst listening to Queen and we didn't do very well. We started again, this time listening to Prince and seemed to do much better. Go figure.

  • My first memories of having proper lengthy gaming sessions are with The Ancient Art of War. A surprisingly deep game for it's time, many an weekend were spent in front of my dad's computer whilst mother looked on disapprovingly.

  • What can you say, I think everyone was taken with this game. Fantastic shooter, great scripted events and a suitably crazy story. It had it all.

  • Made me want to be a pirate. Seriously. The sword fighting dialogue is still used within my group of friends to this day. A Bona fide classic.

  • I'm a football (soccer) geek. This lets me live my sporting fantasies out in a text like fashion.

  • The first MMO that truly sucked me in. It was also the reason I didn't do too well in my final year of Uni (I still passed, I'm not that much of a fool). None of the fantasy based offerings did much for me and so I yearned for something more sci-fi, and AO filled that gap nicely. Buggy as hell on launch, but after that this game was an absolute joy.

  • To paraphrase Penny Arcade:

    I guess you punch trees?

    Which creates... wood?

Which I can turn into sticks?

And then I can turn the sticks in to...

    Oh no

    Oh NO...

I'm in some real fucking trouble here.

  • I don't know what it was about this game that I loved so much. I like to think it was ahead of it's time in terms of scope. I really need to play it again to be honest. (I still have it on CD...)

@KillyDarko: Indeed it is! I've seen the pre-order go up on Steam already.... haven't read much about it though, so want to find out if it's bringing enough new features and won't just be a database update!

Nice list, man! Half-Life, Deus Ex and Planescape also rank among my favorites ever.
And I'm also a big sucker for the FM franchise (since the old CM2 days). The new one's coming out by the end of October, right? :)
