Cosmetic recoil - Stright from a message board troll

COSMETIC RECOIL

So I hang out on GameSpot quite a bit. Hate the place, but I like the community. Lots of PC gamers on there, and they are good people for most part. But every now and then, you get a troll. A troll of such gigantic stupidity that it is hard not to make fun of.

This is what he had to say about shooting mechanics in Far Cry 2:

Last time i checked, i explained you that the recoil in far cry 2 is cosmetic, when you move your mouse the effects cancels itself in order to remain accurate on consoles. However in crysis that it was designed for a mouse and keyboard, the recoil cannot be bypasses by moving the mouse.

Honestly i never once stand still in far cry 2 and shoot my weapon waiting for it to display any movement. Far cry 2 is a game that you run around like crazy and quickly aim and shoot and run away. In that way the guns remain accurate. congratulate you for finding out that if you stand still and press the firing button the weapon actually moves but it is beyond me why would anyone stand stil and hold down the fire key in far cry 2. So i couldnt have known. Anyway point is that it does not affect your perfomance, its purelly cosmetic, when you run around and shoot that fake recoil effect does not put you off target.

So yeah they handle accurate like hell but if you ask wherever there is cosmetic recoil when you stand completly still? Yeah there is you pointed that out to me and honestly i wouldnt know since i see no reason for anyone to stand still and click left mouse button till the weapon decides to move. In the actual fighting though there is no recoil to put you offttarget.

What's your favorite photograph?

Check out some of the best pictures on Panoramio:

The Best of Panoramio Part I

I have become very fascinated with photography lately. Its probably because I have been traveling quite a bit in the last couple of years. I still don't own a good camera, but its definitely on my list of things to buy next year. I am looking to buy a not too expensive DSLR. America is such a beautiful country and my PowerShot does not justice.

I have discovered a great community for sharing photographs on Panoramio. Most of my pictures have been selected for Google Earth. So its a matter of pride for me.

I encourage you to check out the link I posted. So what's your favorite photograph?

S.T.A.L.K.E.R Review

My S.T.A.L.K.E.R Reivew

S.T.A.L.K.E.R is one of those games that is hard to describe. Games like this are produced once in a generation. S.T.A.L.K.E.R enjoys a cult like following among pc gamers and for a good reason too.

At release, it was quite buggy for most people. Thankfully, I never bought it at release. I have been told stories of people who played about 30% of the game and the developers released a patch which rendered the previous saves useless. I can imagine the frustration of gamers who bought it at launch.

Nevertheless, the game is not without merits. I wouldn't begrudge the game for its bugs. I am not a very forgiving gamer, I don’t persist games which frustrate me; but I stuck with the game, and I am glad I did.   Read more.

Gears of War PC Review

Gears of War PC Review

Gears of War is a 3rd person shooter developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It was first released as an Xbox 360 exclusive, and it went on to become one of the most successful games for the console. It was later released for the PC with some added content and better visuals to support the high end graphics cards.

You play as Marcus Fenix, a former COG soldier who was imprisoned for abandoning his post, and reinstated into command and asked to join the Coalition to fight Locust. The game is quite different from most 3rd person shooters in that, it relies heavily on cover mechanics. You take cover behind various objects during firefights, and stand up to shoot and duck back out of sight.

Even in the casual setting, there is some frustration to be had. Difficulty climbs quite steeply in these sections; I felt there should have been at least one checkpoint during these parts, instead there were none.

The sound track is good, but it could have used more variations. Every time there an action sequence, the same music kicks in throughout the game. Granted that the game itself is not very long, yet, listening to the same tune over and over again tends to get monotonous, and however good it might be. The effects are top notch, weapons pack a punch, especially the top gun and the six-shooter.

Weapons are fun to use. I especially loved the torque bow it reminded me of Rambo. In fact, the whole game feels like a big Hollywood movie. It’s very slick and fast paced. The melee combat has some great moments. The chainsaw to the machinegun was a great idea; when you get a chainsaw kill on an enemy, the game takes over and it shows you slicing an enemy into half. As cool as this might be, it could have been implemented better, because sometimes it doesn’t work like it should.

The best in the game for me are the visuals. Gears of War uses Unreal 3 engine, and it looks fantastic. I played the game in DirectX 10 mode at 1920x1200 with all settings on maximum on my EVGA GeForce 260GTX, and it looked out of this world. There is something about the art and environment though, most of the game environment is various shades of dirt. This can seem monotonous after a while. This could have used some lush green jungles as seen in Crysis. It would have looked beautiful in Unreal 3 engine.

The game is stable but, there is an annoying savegame bug that causes the savegames to disappear after exit. This happened a few times even after patching it. If you are playing offline, there is a fix, and also a way to backup the save games. Check blog review for fix.

Over all it’s a fantastic experience. Gears of War is an excellent port. It has all the qualities of a good port should have and some bad ones too. Controls are very well optimized for the PC. I have no hesitation in recommending this game.

+ Graphics
+ Sound effects
+ Level design
+ Fast paced gameplay
+ Cover system
+ Weapons, especially torque bow

- Savegame bug
- Repetitive soundtrack
- Uneven checkpoints on two occasions

Verdict - Must play

Crysis Review

CRYSIS REVIEW

I would call a game immersive when I tend to keep playing and forget to quick save. This happened to me a lot in Crysis. I kept going and I never really saved. If I died, I was happy replaying from the last save point, and trying a different approach. Personally, I have not had that kind of immersion in a very long time.

Lord of the Rings Battle For Middle Earth

When I think about RTS games, I strongly feel that Lord of the Rings: Battle For Earth is really underrated. You don't hear people talking about it for some reason. I a not a veteran RTS player or anything, but this game is definitely fun. Here is my perspective on the game:

Those of you who haven't played it, I suggest you give it a shot. Its not very expensive.

A Look Back At The Older Versions

CLICK HERE FOR SOME PICTURES THAT MAY BRING BACK A LOT OF MEMORIES

I decided to hunt for some older versions of browsers and test them on newer machines. Just to get an idea of how much things have changed. Even though, I am quite conscious of the change over the last few years, I am still surprised at how "primitive" the web was back in the day.

I usually don't care about browsers so much. I am not loyal to any company. I don't like to switch, if I can help it, but if a browser promises to offer me what I want, I'd be sure to give it a shot.

That said, take a look at some of the interface changes that browsers went through. It will surely make you appreciate what we have today, if nothing else.
