Unboxing My Oculus Rift

My Oculus Rift and GoPro HERO3: White Edition arrived today. I strapped the latter to my head to do an unboxing video, but seeing as it was my first time trying to use it properly... well, things didn't go so well. You can still hear me talk, though! I am about to use the Oculus Rift for the first time and will be recording everything. Hopefully I'll do a better job in the future trying to cover this thing.

Anything anyone here wants to see in particular? I already have a bunch of demos downloaded and will be streaming games on my Twitch channel soon and posting them on YouTube later, but I'll take requests, as well.

I've been dreaming about this since I was a little kid. Exciting!

lmao you should have done a second take! tapped the box closed and everything haha.

after all the great demoing @patrickklepek did, i just couldnt help myself. i just ordered one recently. how's the weight while wearing it @charlesalanratliff? my biggest concerns are eye strain/motion sickness/neckstrain. can you comment on your experiences?

also for somereason im not completly clear about this, but can you run your normal display out put to these? or do you need a dedicated separate monitor? thanks!

If that star is actually a pile of money hurtling through the sky toward where you live, yes, you wish upon that star.

You will run to John Carmack himself and throw money at his face after seeing this.

The weight is very light and shouldn't cause any issues. I've never had neck strain or anything from using it, though I've never worn it for more than 40 minutes at a time (and that's just because none of the things I've played have that much content or due to motion sickness). I doubt that part will be a problem.

The first time I used it my eyes were messed up for a little while afterward. I made a post on Twitter after taking it off and had a difficult time just typing the message out because my vision was so screwed up. I didn't realize until hours later that I had made a typo! I've never really had any issues after that, however.

Motion sickness has been an issue (something I've never had a problem with before in my life), but only in demos or games where the direction your head is facing is separate from that of your body. I get sick when I press forward to move straight but go in a different direction because I didn't realize my body was not facing forward like my head was. Different games handle this differently, and I don't have issues when the head and body always face the same direction. The demo that has made me the most sick is Museum of the Microstar. It gets bad near the end!:

I don't remember which one, but there was another demo where I actually felt sick the entire next day after playing it.

And yes, you can use your normal display.

I try and make sure I don't play on an empty stomach and have a glass of Apple Juice nearby to help with any stomach issues I may have.

As an Oculus Rift owner... I highly recommend you wait until the Dev Kit 2.0 or commercial release. The resolution, ghosting, and latency are dealbreakers with the current version. If you're a game developer, go for it; if you're an end user, hold off.
