So, Demon's Souls broke my spirit.

I wanted to like it, and I did - for a while. Opening intro set great mood and first few levels very interesting enough. I could make processes, learned and experienced new things. Than came the Firelurker. It took few fights to get familiar with it's patterns, but at some point in every fight the camera would make a unsuspected twist or got stuck into something and death followed fast. After this happening over 10 times, I had to say I had enough. There were other things too, like the fact that my Wanderer armor sucked and the guy who sold better armor vanished from the game, black phantoms that should drop important item ran into a bottomless pit and levels started to seem really dull after playing trough them the 10th time over. Was the game too hard? Maybe. For me it seemed too much as test of players patience - which I don't seem to have.

I don't think you understand? Maybe the game just isn't for you!

Yeah, Firelurker was tough. A lot of the bosses on Demon's Souls are more grueling than Dark Souls. Then again maybe that's just because I was prepared for Dark Souls.

Though I'm not ashamed to say I cheesed a good lot of them. Staying where they couldn't hit me and pelting them with 486941561 arrows. There was the Armored Spider, and that plague world first boss, and of course Firelurker. Honestly, those are the only ways the game was broken.

Careful, pointing out the game is broken gets "Oh you just don't understand!" and "Maybe the game is not for you!"

While I managed to get Flamelurker stuck behind something, then chipped away at him until he died, I understand completely why you gave up. The game is maddeningly inconsistent when it comes to bosses and enemies, having some of the bosses seem like a cakewalk compared to Black Phantoms or even newer enemy types. The level progression is muck, you'd need a guide to get through it since it works in the least linear way possible. Combat is shit. Simple as. Stunning or knockbacks are serious issues in the game, for you, not the enemy. The dodge mechanic is borked. Some Phantoms, like the Meat Cleaver fucker, are annoyingly powerful, and some enemies can hit you even if you evade because they simply lock to your pathing.

Overall, it's a broken game that started out great but couldn't keep the mechanics tight enough to make the rest of the game worth playing. It's not a hard game, the mechanics are just set up to rail against you any chance possible...which isn't difficulty, it's just boring.

As my memory recalls, the boss battles in Demon's Souls were much more difficult than the boss battles in Dark Souls.

I just started playing Demon's Souls after hundreds of hours of Dark Souls and I can definitely say that it is not true: the bosses in dark souls are much more punishing than in the prequel. I died maybe three times in a boss fight yet, the phalanx, the armored Spider and the Maneater...I have been beating the crap out all the others on my first attempt, including the Flamelurker and last night the old monk and the adjudicator (or something like that). I have one more world to go through and I will be done.

I think that whatever you played first in the series of the DS will seem to be the hardest though since you discover the core mechanic the hard way. Once you do know the tricks, it is not that hard.

I really hope that they will make DS2 insanely hard ^^

How could you have died on Phalanx but killed Flamelurker on your first try, especially after playing Dark Souls?

The bosses in Demons Souls have more variety to them and are just more interesting on average. I suppose that also has a lot to do with what you play first because most of the bosses in Dark Souls simply reminded me of the Demons Souls bosses but not as interesting. Not to say Dark Souls didn't have some cool boss fights - stylistically I thought Gaping Dragon, Sif and Quelaag were cool bosses - Sif being the only one that I thought was any fun to fight and even he suffers from the "tall leg" syndrome of Souls lockon combat. Flamelurker is definitely the toughest of them all in Demons and unless you are leveled or really skilled at the game (or a magic user heh) it's a really tough fight. I remember being profoundly excited and happy when I finally beat him.

Do not rely on getting the Flamelurker stuck behind pillars or bones. You will have to finish this fight the old fashioned way.

Use a bow, and keep dodging.

i have beaten him legit and by using a cheap way....if you want to be cheap just to get by him and see the rest of the game....use the giant bone to the left to your advantage and hide behind it...he tends to get stuck on the bone and gets all confused....some range magic will speed the battle along but while he is running against the bone you can get in a melee hit or two and back away. If he gets to close to you just run around for a little and lure him back to that bone.

Flame lurker has given me problems every time I fight him unless I spam ranged or magic.

The Maneater? F*** that thing. I've beat him in normal combat enough times. Now I just use the fog gate trick to take him out.

As for all of Dark Souls bosses? I never really had a problem with any of them except Ornstien and Smough. Just had to figure out how to take on all the bosses. Those jerks would get me if I solo'ed them no matter how hard I tried, I always needed someone to give me a hand; Usually Sun Bro.

Don't give up OP! You can do it!

Ah Flamelurker; it feels like forever since I've heard that name. I'm with you on the Demon's Souls breaking your spirit thing. It's been a couple of years (I think) since I last played Demon's Souls and I still haven't recovered; and I fucking platinumed the damn game. There are some tricks to Flamelurker that can make the fight easier. I remember trying to trap him near the ribcage on the left side of the area and shoot soul arrows (or whatever that spell is called) at him. Souls arrows really eat away at his health.

I've recently purchased Dark Souls so I'm ready to re-scar my soul and mind.

You go into the little corner that is mostly enclosed by bones and Flamelurker has difficulty actually getting to you because his pathing is really badly programmed. Pre-patch this was a reliable strategy. Just hole up in the corner and shoot ranged stuff at him until dead. After the patch, it only works some of the time and Flamelurker can get at you if he decides to (sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't).

Thanks, that helped. Basically I just sidestepped there and shot magic arrows at it. It took two or three magic bars but I got some spice from the things in the level 3-1. Still camera and lock on got little too crazy for comfort.

I dont remember most of the boss's from Demon's Souls. I just remember Soul Raying things until they stopped moving. I think I brute forced the Firelurker though. The thing that bothered me the most going back to DS's for a bit was having to manage my inventory so I could move. That and I couldnt be bothered to do the Valley of Defilement again.

Purple Flame Shield is your best friend in this fight. Use it and block almost all of Flame Lurker's attacks. ez-cheesey.

@yummylee: Flamelurker is tough but easier than the DLC bosses and on par with Gwyn/Ornstein and Smough; Maneaters are just dumb not really hard, a gearcheck like Four Kings more or less. Dark Silver Shield trivializes them as do infinite healing items and warding.

You're not farming enough. You're not upgrading your weapon enough. You don't have good enough armor. You can't dodge appropriately. All of these are things that might be stopping you from beating any part of this game. Dont' let your spirits go down. If you have to look up online or ask in a forum, do so. Trust me. You'll beat that Flamelurker with just a little bit more information.

@charlie_victor_bravo: Don't feel bad. I too am in the same situation where I have tolerated severely broken RPGs and action games. I'm continually confounded by what people think they see in Demon's Soul.

Demons Souls was awesome, loved it to death, I played a all melee huge sword wielding dude and surprisingly didn't had that much of a problem going through it all completely solo.

That exploit was sorta patched. Kinda. To those not familiar, you could bait the Flamelurker into attacking you in a small space by the large bones near the entrance of his area where he could not actually hit you. Your immediate left when you enter.

The main problem I have with Demon's Souls is the distance between shortcut or archstone and the boss areas. Sometimes it was short, as in 1-1. Sometimes it was a tedious 10+ minutes of backtrack every time you died, as in 1-2 (Tower Knight).

It's mostly only Flamelurker who's super difficult (edit: the maneaters are pretty tough as well actually); the rest I'd say are at least on par with the difficulty of the Dark Souls bosses.

There were also a ton of super easy bosses on Demon's Souls as well. I'd consider both games comparable. Both have bosses on both ends of the difficulty spectrum.

I'd argue that Artorias and O&S are harder versions for Flamelurker/Maneaters as well. Though yeah, they both definitely have their hard and easy battles...

Maneaters on New Game+++ OH GOD I'M GETTING FLASHBACKS!

As for Flamelurker, I think using Water Veil (magic that mitigates fire damage) before the fight would help. Or was that for the spider boss?

If you can get a hold of a spear, just keep one of those giant pillars between you and Flamelurker, and when he goes for a big attack (with the pillar blocking it), you can stab him with a spear through the pillar to stay safe. Just make sure you are super mobile.

Summon someone. If it is your first time ever playing Demon's Souls, summoning others will be your savior for the boss battles. They can show you how to defeat them, and help you do so.

After the tower knight I kinda felt the fest of the game was fairly easy, including the Firelurker. Though I didn't experience any camera issues.

I played as a pure warrior all the way, though apparently magic is pretty overpowered, not that knowing that would have made me play one as I feel these games greatest strength is the very deliberate close combat. I enjoyed the game though I didn't feel the need to play it more than once. Dark Souls is definitely the better game and in a way it should have been Dark Souls.
