Favorite Characters

A simple list of my favorite video game characters. They might make the list solely based on their personality, their looks/design, or a mix between the two. Or just something completely random, who knows? Like most of my lists; not in strict order, but the higher an entry is on the list, the more it means to me.

List items

  • Extremely well-written dialogue, mysterious and wise personality, great design and an amazing voice actress. This character is near perfect. She's a databank of awesome quotes.

  • Absurd. Just absolutely absurd. Pyramid Head is the most disturbing and horrifying character ever conceived. The way he behaves, and the role he plays in Silent Hill 2 - Everything he is, is horror itself. Psychologically terrifying. And I love him to death for it. He gave me nightmares back in 2001. Yes, for real.

  • How can one have played a Knights of the Old Republic game and not have this character on a list like this? His dialogue and personality are absolutely hilarious. Dark humor entertains me, meatbag.

  • Come on. If we're talking dark humor, GLaDOS is one of the prime examples of it. Her taunts, outright lies and sarcastic remarks are just perfect. She made Portal the game it is today, and we all know it.

  • I knew from the first conversation with this floating skull that I would absolutely love him. A perfect sidekick, with among the wittiest and funniest responses ever. And he's only a skull! Watch out, he'll bite ya.

  • Wheatley is easily one of the funniest stupid characters I've experienced in a long time. He made Portal 2 so much more entertaining to waltz through. Most of it is thanks to Stephen Merchant's delivery and superb voice, and flawless writing.

  • Just the notion of how powerful he is in the Force, and how corrupt it made him, interested me from the start. I like characters with a little mystique behind them, and there's not a shortage of that behind neither Kreia nor Nihilus. That's what makes them among my favorites from the series. And he looks so goddamn cool, wouldn't you agree? Oh, and did I mention; he wiped out an entire planet, on his own, solely through the Force. Don't mess with the dark lord of hunger.

  • Yes, she is kind of a klutz getting kidnapped all the time, but it's not as bad as Princess Peach - Zelda makes for an infinitely more interesting character. Heck, she actually HAS a personality. She's a damsel in distress, but one you'll enjoy saving. She was given a lot more personality in Ocarina of Time and later games, which, not surprising, is where she starts being interesting.

  • Between all the "Hah"s and "Hiyah"s there really isn't much of a personality going on here, other than an ordinary lad with the will and courage to save the world. On the other hand, I really love to play as him, and his design is among the best. Happy and kind-hearted, he is a goddamn iconic hero in the industry, and that's a good enough reason for me to include him.

  • "Soul of the mind, key to life's ether. Soul of the lost, withdrawn from it's vessel. Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended. So the world might be mended."

  • B-movie and punk rock references. Imaginary friends. Great comebacks. Weird OCDs. All captured in spirit by voice actor Jeff Kramer. He might be based on Agent Cooper from Twin Peaks, but that doesn't make him any less fun in my book. Thank you Endurance Run.

  • When it comes to strong female protagonists, April is one of the best there is. Her background story is both tragic and interesting, and together with great dialogue and witty responses she is half the reason The Longest Journey was such an awesome game.

  • If we're talking about strong female leads, let's list a few more. Jade is a really big part of what made Beyond Good & Evil great. Independent and down to earth, she has a very charming personality, and we got along very well.

  • Yes, I like me some independent women in video games, that's no surprise. Alyx fits this category as well, in most aspects, but at the same time she's rather girly and insecure at times - something that makes her kind of cute. That's probably the main reason why she's so appealing to the opposite sex, and why most guys have a cyber-crush on her. She is a well-realized and realistic character, and a great love-interest without making it blatantly obvious, or seem desperate.

  • How cute isn't this little bugger then? I just want to pinch her cheeks like old ladies do. She took over Navi's role in Twilight Princess (not as much "hey listen!" though), with a bit of Zelda thrown in there which made her a lot more interesting as a sidekick. Even though Zelda herself was satisfying as well in her small role, I really enjoyed having this cute midget around for the majority of the game. The reveal toward the end of the game was interesting, and made the princess-influences make sense.

  • Probably the most bad-ass woman in video game history. A motherly and humoristic woman, who also happens to be a demon-slaughtering, insanely flexible, over-the-top action-packed Umbra Witch with excessive amounts of sex appeal and style. This lady will make your heart melt, and then chew it up like nobody's business. And she attacks with guns, magic, and hair. With HAIR!

  • One of the first characters I took a liking to, ever, when I was a kid. I guess his somewhat neutral stance in life, and entertaining extravaganzas in the Star Wars universe (I love me some Star Wars - no shit) made him an interesting character to follow. He's not the typical kind-hearted and naive Jedi we often meet. This man had some troubling things to take care of, and it was interesting to see the outcome of it all. He's like a mix between Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, which probably was the whole point, and I think it works remarkably well.

  • He's angry. That's all you really need to know. He starts out with quite a "mild" vengeance mindset in the first game, but quickly becomes the angriest person alive. He won't settle with the death of Ares only, hell no, fuck all gods! You know what? Fuck everyone. They'll all be dead in a minute. He's just pure fun, both when cursing in someone's general direction, and when ripping fools to shreds.

  • Why is Yorda here? Frankly, I can't say for sure. There's just something about her that made me interested from the get go. A perfect fit for the game. She is not a silent protagonist, but she makes about as much sense as one. I still don't know what the heck she's talking about. I guess the mystique surrounding her, and the fact that she was the only other friendly soul in the whole game made her very likable, and easy to get attached to - even though the whole game is based around escorting her around like she's a moron. Not that it matters, as for some mysterious reason I still loved holding hands with her. All the time.

  • Kick-ass 60's female spy with the perfect 60's female spy personality. I'm on board. Super hot and really fun to play as. Her design is damn awesome, in both games. They really nailed it.

  • Wise ex-pirate turned vampire. Mysterious, powerful, neutral, and can crack a joke whenever, wherever. What's not to love?

  • This bitch is crazy, I tells ya. In a good way, obviously! I like giving deities a good spanking. Vivec, you're next!

  • Yes, I liked FFXIII. A lot. Unlike everybody else. While I disliked a few of the characters (*cough* Hope *cough*) I found Lightning to be one of the best. She was perfect as a lead character. Great voice acting, interesting backstory, a personality you could get behind, and easily had one of the best designs in the game. Her personality might not exactly have been the most extreme in any direction, but that's why she worked so well as lead. Without making her completely blank. And I don't take into consideration what happens in 13-2 and Lightning Returns, beucase, fuck that.

  • I just find this lovely lady's design to be a massive breath of fresh air, pure and simple. Kind of like the whole game is. Really stylish without making it overly complex or totally flamboyant. She's a damn perfect fit for the game. I also love to run around hearing her out-of-breath puffs and moans while... climbing. Ehm! Well, in a sense that's one of the most prominent features you experience of her, so... yeah.
