Video game characters that don't suck

Some games get it just right, making their cast likable, unobnoxious or like real human beings.  They deserve at least some credit for this.

List items

  • The cast of The Ballad of Gay Tony could easily have been in the main game. Not only did I care infinately more for Tony, Yusef and Luis' stupid dealer friends, I really wanted to see what happened to them after the game finished.

Luis is not cocky, psychopathic or angry at something like the main motivation in most GTA games. It is purely dedication to his long term friend and employer that drags him through the many high octane set-pieces and helicopter bashing (a bit of money helps, too).

Some great lines and a great character for the franchise to move forward. You've really outdone yourself this time, Rockstar.

  • It is not until DoW II and the awesome campaign mode that I realised how batshit insane the Space Marines were.

Genetically modified, super intelligent and yet mindlessly loyal to the Imperium. They are the elite of a dogmatic empire of humans, living hundreds of years and survivng thousands of battles only to get torn apart by ripper swarms.

All games dwindle in scale to the lore of this universe, and somehow, amongst all that detail, they manage to raise the bar of insanity even higher with supermen in blue tank armour killing aliens with chainswords.

  • Each character in TF2 deserves some recognition from great character design, but the "Snoiper" could very well be a star in his own movie. His "Meet The" video is charming, funny and unbelievably cool.

  • Louis is the only member of the original cast to still be stuck in his day to day life. Notice how his tie remains on, does he expect to go back to work at any minute? I think he hoped so.

His lines and voice acting are also great. There's something funny about the paniced way he repetes the word "shit".

  • Of all the cast in Mass Effect Urdnot Wrex had not only the best and most detailed character modelling but some of the best lines of dialogue in the series.

The very nature of the Krogan takes the term "grizzled mercinary" and makes the image conjured up look like a teddy bear.

Fearsome, interesting backstory, intelligent and more human than most humans in the game.

  • He has made an appearance in many games, and rarely disappoints. The language of this rustic traveller is the shout of "viva la revalution" and "kekekekeke"

The gun has a such a mythos surrounding it that it has become a character of it's own, the 'bad-boy' of the gun world. You won't see Tom Clancey's squeaky-clean heroes carry one of these, this is an Agent 47 weapon of fortune in your face tearin' up the place like a mace.

  • Voiced by none other than Samuel L. Jackson, this bastard hounded you to the ends of the earth in GTA San Andreas.

The story was such a rollercoaster I forgot where I was. I did genuinely care about the Grove Street characters, even though they bordered on insane stereotypes.

  • Where have you been all my life, good buddy? By far the best part of Fallout 3 was meeting this guy.

Just goes to show that Fallout 3 needs to have co-op and a partner system.

  • As goofy as the some of the supporting cast are, Phoenix is the perfect hero for the overly dramatic finger pointing "point and click" adventure.

His dedication to the client is a clear enough motivation to keep going despite ridiculous gaps in the law and witness' blatent lies going completely unpunished, Wright's the right man for the job.

  • Nintendo's gigantic failed attempt to put an "edgy" character into the Starfox games. Falco is worth a mention because he embodies the lame ass demographic panning which focus groups force upon character design in order to tick every box on the "generic characters" list, ready for shipping.
