My list of games this month is a bit smaller than last month’s but there was still quite a few. I never did write that L.A. Noire review but just know that I liked it but had problems with having nothing really to do in the city and the story was kind of pointless. Unofficial score: 4 out of 5. I played some games for review for Gaming Precision, others because I wanted to, for one reason or another. Without further adieu, let’s get to it!
I got back Gamefly this month and I rented Anarchy Reigns for the Xbox 360 and I wrote a review for that on Gaming Precision. I ended up not really enjoying it but it’s a shame because I liked the combat and thought the multiplayer wasn’t that bad. However, the campaign sucked and so did its story. It’s repetitive as hell and there’s a whole lot of doing nothing if you’re not good at the game. Also, there’s almost no community for the game online so it’s hard to get a match going. Doesn’t matter if the multiplayer is good if you can’t play it. Platinum Games is known for their action titles but this isn’t one of their best efforts. I’d say skip it unless you have a friend who you know will play it with you.
After Anarchy Reigns, I got Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 for the Xbox 360. I’ll be writing the review for that game soon and it will be up on Gaming Precision so be on the lookout for that. I like golf games and I can appreciate all the little things that make the game more flexible and easier to play. However, the features are lacking and online play is boring. I did like importing a picture of me to make my custom golfer. It looks just like me! I won’t say anything else for now because the review will detail what I’m talking about but I will say that I wish the annual sports games were released at a discount instead of the full $60.
I finished Skulls of the Shogun and man, that’s a hard game. I got a real good feeling when I completed it because the last skirmish is a real bitch! I really liked it though and reviewed it for Gaming Precision so check that out. I enjoyed the humor in the game a lot. There are also a lot of different units and strategies that you can utilize without being overwhelmed. The game does a good job of showing you all you can do, though it’s not great at explaining everything if that makes sense. It was recently dropped in price from $15 to $10 so definitely pick it up. It’s for Xbox Live Arcade, Windows 8 and Windows Phone so you have a lot of options.
I finished Devil May Cry 1 via the HD collection. I hated it. I hated it so much. That game is such a stupid piece of technological nonsense, DMC fans should not only not be angry with Ninja Theory but be grateful with the changes that they made. The story makes no sense, the combat is so stiff it has rigor mortis, the graphics are ugly from a design perspective, the camera acts like a paranoid squirrel, and Dante, Trish and all of the characters in the game are more like contrived plot points who do things motivated by nothing. That game is seriously one of the worst games I have ever played. I can’t imagine how the second game will be when I get to that since that’s supposed to be the bad one. Absolutely atrocious, and an insult to video games in general.
Currently, I’m focusing on Aliens Colonial Marines because I found out it really wasn’t scary (and it isn’t). I won’t be doing a review, just playing it because I want to see if it’s that bad of a game. I’m about half way through and I don’t hate it. It’s not a great game but I don’t think it’s as bad as everyone is saying. Sometimes it can be boring and it’s prone to cheap deaths but the action is intense and controls are functional and the environments are entertaining enough to dispel the repetitiveness of the overall gameplay. I did a Colorwind Plays video of the first mission so check it out if you want to see the game for yourself.
I spent some time play SimCity 4 since the new game had a disaster of a launch and I think I might never play that game. I had to go through all of the tutorials because I was lost at first and didn’t know what I was supposed to be doing. I got the hang of it though and built Colorwind Plaza. The city was thriving and becoming really intelligent and I started to get really addicted to it but then I screwed up my town and got into debt. It’s a fun game but it was definitely time for a new edition to be released. Too bad that new SimCity is what we got.
Some catch up from the last Gaming Landscape, I completed Brutal Legend on the PC. I enjoyed it but I recommend people get the console versions as the PC versions had too many problems with not being able to play because of the updates, audio glitches and various other technical problems. It is an enjoyable game with interesting game features, a decent story (not great but decent), and fun characters. You can get it now for the consoles for under $10 so definitely pick it up.
I’m still playing the first Borderlands but I haven’t had the time to really play it. I think I picked it up once or twice all month so not much to say. Still like it and enjoying it but I need to find the time to play it. Same thing goes for Bit.Trip.Runner 2 which I started but didn’t stick to. Again, I like it but didn’t spend much time with it. I also gave up on playing Sonic 2 because of a Sonic feature I have in the works. You won’t see it for a while though…
Finally, I have been playing and utterly failing to complete Tomb Raider. I’m sort of taking my time but still, I thought I would’ve been done a long time ago. I got it during the first week it came out but I’m only a little over halfway through it. I like it but something about it keeps me from getting really invested. I know it’s not going to be one of my games of the year and that’s a little disappointing but I still really like it and what they did with Lara Croft, though I don’t like the overall story. I might do a full blog post about the game when I eventually finish it.
Well, that’s what I’ve been playing. I have several games on the docket like The Walking Dead Survival Instinct (not looking forward to that) but I think I want to finish Tomb Raider and Bit.Trip.Runner 2 before I get into them. Also, I never finished the first BioShock so I’m going to wait on BioShock Infinite. However, I’m not starting that until I finish Borderlands so who knows when that’ll be. Well, that’s what I’ve been playing. What about you? Let me know your gaming landscape in the comment section below!
