What Should I Get With My Wii U?

In a previous post, I asked whether or not I should get a Wii U. I've decided to get one in about two and a half weeks, as that is when I'll have the money. However, I'm getting conflicted as to what games I should get. I have a short list in mind but I don't know which I should pursue and which I shouldn't. So I thought I'd get some input as to what to get. Here's the list.

  • New Super Mario Bros U
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2
  • Lego City Undercover
  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
  • Pikmin 3
  • Rayman Legends
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
  • Chasing Aurora
  • Little Inferno
  • Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition
  • Mutant Mudds Deluxe
  • Ducktails Remastered
  • Pokemon Rumble U
  • Earthbound
  • Breath of Fire II

If the game isn't listed here then either I'm not interested (ZombiU) or it won't be out by the time I get the Wii U (Sonic Lost World). So out of all these games, the one I'll probably automatically get is The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD since I'll be getting that bundle. Other than that, I would like to get two more retail games and possibly a few eShop titles since those are cheaper. Let me know in the comments what you all think I should pick up.

Monster Hunter 3 U is on sale right now on the eshop (50% off), you may want to pick that up now if you are interested (not sure if Nintendo has a web based store)

I would recommend not getting Little Inferno unless it's extremely cheap, I don't regret buying it, but it's not much of a game.

Pikmin, Rayman, Monster Hunter, and Rayman seem like the best choices

Zombie U.

A receipt.

Seriously though, Wind Waker seems like the only major reason to own a Wii U.

You should think long and hard about picking up The Wonderful 101. It's pretty good.

Just out of curiosity, which SKU are you picking up? If you get the Deluxe one, you'll be getting Nintendo Land anyway (though it's not on your list) but if you pick up the Wind Waker bundle (if they're still in stock) you'll be getting a downloadable copy of Wind Waker HD, so getting that will knock one of your games off the list right off the bat.

Out of what you listed (that I've played), I can recommend Rayman Legends, Ducktales Remastered and Earthbound (also Wind Waker, but if you get that bundle then that won't be a problem). I can recommend NSMB Wii U as well if you still have a lot of fun with sidescrolling Mario games. I also had a good bit of fun with Nintendo Land myself.

Can't be much help myself since I just bought a Wii U myself, and the only other time I've played a Wii U is at a friend's house.

If you already have your heart set on buying one and won't listen to reason, I guess the Lego game. It's the only thing on the platform that looks interesting.

Shouldn't everyone with a Wii U be required to get EarthBound at this point? Like we should load them up in the back of a military van and ship them to the gulags if they aren't helping realize the dream of Mother 3's localization and a happier tomorrow.

It's $10 @colorwind. Get that and Rayman Legends!

Stay away from DuckTales Remastered. Try this instead.

New Super Mario Bros. U is really more of the same, but if you liked the other games in the series, it's still great. I haven't bought the Luigi DLC thing yet, but I hear it's a pretty good. Nintendo Land is fine if you have friends over who were into things like Wii Sports or Wii Play, but it's not nearly as accessible as those games. I bought The Wonderful 101 and only got to play it for a few minutes, but if you're into whatever Platinum Games spits out and like things a bit frantic, go for it. Little Inferno... get it on sale either on Wii U or PC.

And Earthbound. I demand you buy Earthbound. Now. And Super Metroid just to please me.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is a pretty solid version of the game; it has some modes and features that aren't on the other consoles and you don't have to worry about buying any character DLC. And those Nintendo-themed costumes are hilariously well-done! Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is also a great version of the game; if you like questing, hunting, and learning the strategies of your favored weapons, you might enjoy it.

I know it's not on your list, but The Wonderful 101 is an action game, through and through. Don't be confused by the army of characters under your control; it's not Pikmin by any means and can get brutal. Definitely a lot of fun and rewarding to play.

Also, EarthBound, because holy shit, dude. Breath of Fire II is also worth it. Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition I'd recommend mostly if you don't already have the 3DS version, but it's also a great game.

New Super Mario Bros U is a solid choice, but if you have already played New Super Mario Bros on Wii then it is just more of the same. Otherwise, everything I have read is that Rayman Legends is amazing, so I would start with that and then pick up Wind Waker, Earthbound, or both.

Wind Waker is incredible. I played it on Gamecube and will be getting it on WiiU, but since you're getting the bundle here are a few more suggestions...

Pikmin 3 is great. I'm a fan of the series and this one is probably my favorite.

Rayman Legends is a lot of fun and absolutely beautiful.

Earthbound is a must own. You will never forget that game. It's timeless.

A couple not listed you may enjoy...

SteamWorld Dig is an eShop game that's surprisingly good. There's a Quick Look for it.

And finally, Wonderful 101. I found that game so refreshing, I loved the animations, writing, and character designs.

Hope this helps a bit.

I just picked one Friday and I've really been enjoying Pikmin 3 and Wind Waker. If you can still find it I would recommend the Zelda Wii U because you can get Nintendoland for around $15. Nintendoland is only really enjoyable if you have enough people to play with you.

Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends and Wonderful 101 (Platinum's best since Bayonetta) are three of the year's very best games, if you're getting a WiiU they are absolute must-owns (unless you have Rayman Legends on another system, but yeah). ZombiU is also pretty damn fantastic and is probably the best use of the Gamepad. NSMBU is the best game in the NSMB series, and I really loved it where I didn't get super into the previous entries, but it definitely seems like a game where people either really love it or they just feel like it's more of the same.

So basically, the following WiiU games are absolute must-haves for WiiU owners (that isn't to say there aren't other games worth owning, but they're just not as pressing)

  • Pikmin 3
  • Rayman Legends
  • Wonderful 101
  • ZombiU
  • WindWaker HD
  • Earthbound

If I had to boil it down to two I would probably go with Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101.

@rick_fingers: Go away. People like you are the worst.

Definitely get Wind Waker and Pikmin 3. And I would say Wonderful 101. I'm loving it so far.

@colorwind: Major Release: Rayman Legends and .... not sure. I have NSMBU/Pikmin3/Legocity Undercover, and think they would be placed above everything else on the list. But none of them are titles I could generally recommend (e.g. middling to fair in quality).

I would pick up Super Mario World from the eShop, and play through that again if you have not done so in the last couple years, before going to NSMBU.

Wind Waker HD, Zombi U, Maybe Monster Hunter and some candy to counteract your self-loathing once you realize that you just bought a Wii U.

I enjoyed my time with Pikmin 3 quite a bit, I definitely recommend you buy that. New Super Mario Bros U is alright as well. It's kind of a throwaway entry in the franchise though, it doesn't seem like there's much imagination behind it, but I still have a ton of fun going through the levels as long as my friends are there to play with me. Tekken Tag 2 is great! My favorite game last year. The Wii U version is also really cheap so I say go for it. I couldn't tell you what the online looks like at this point though.

As for downloadable stuff, Little Inferno is pretty cool, but I don't recommend you buy it unless you can get it for super cheap. Breath of Fire II and Earthbound are a couple of excellent RPG classics. Both hold up really well.

@jsnyder82: right back atcha. My apologies that expressing my feelings in an obviously over the top, humorous way was too much for your delicate sensibilities.

Okay. Rayman Legends, and Earthbound are pretty much guaranteed going by this list. Guys, I'm not interested in ZombiU. Don't like horror games. Also, I've played almost all of Platinum Games' stuff and I've only liked Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. Didn't like Bayonetta or Anarchy Reigns or Madworld.

You know what would be cool, a new Lost Winds game using the stylus on the gamepad. If you have a Wii remote I'd say give them a look see on the Wiiware shop, they're only a few hours each though but they're really nice to look at and I like the general twee ness of them.
