I'm not sure how it compares since I've never played the original DotA or League of Legends, but I remember being interested back at release and I took advantage of the $5 deal on now.  I played a bit last night and it's fun, although it looks like you'll really want to find other people to play with.  I didn't test the online waters, but in single player you can play with AI teammates against AI opponents.  My AI teammate was pretty bad compared to the opposition, and combined with my own inexperience, it led to a long game against the easy AI.  I'm hoping to put some more time into it.  We'll see how it goes.

@SuperBuster: I'm not sure there's a game made that uses dice where I haven't gotten frustrated by the dice at one point or another.  But Risk is especially bad for it.  Which is why Diplomacy is the 'answer', as it doesn't use dice.  Of course, Diplomacy has it's own challenges...

Axis & Allies is a little better, but only a little.  The grown-ups play Diplomacy.

The game gains nothing by rigging the dice.  I (and others it seems) beat all five campaign scenarios on the first try, so it's hardly favoring the AI.  I had worse luck playing against other human opponents.

For all the comments about being required to buy health insurance, what's being left out is that the government will subsidize buying the insurance for those who cannot afford it.  Yes, in America we strive towards universal coverage by having the government help people buy services from private companies.

It isn't 'America' that doesn't want universal health care, just a pretty large (and vocal) chunk.  The big problem is the warped perception that many here have about foreign systems.  Fear mongers bandy about words like 'Socialism' and 'Government Takeover' and people who don't know any better just tighten up and scream against change.  Unfortunately, they either don't know that our health care system is grossly inefficient and inhumane, or they do but they fear anything except what they already know.  You actually have people (like at least one in this thread) who will point to Canada and say 'We don't want their awful system!  People die waiting for treatment!'  Of course, they just hear that sort of thing and believe it rather than finding out that it's not true, meanwhile they ignore the fact that people DO die in the USA because they lack any means for reasonable health coverage.

So anyway, to answer to the post heading is pretty simple: ignorance and fear.  Those two things are paralyzing our politics.  I can hardly believe that we're actually as close as we are to some kind of reform, and it's still not nearly what we should have.

Lord of the Rings Online is where I first saw the pre-release 'Lifetime Subscription' plan (first time I saw a post-release 'Lifetime Subscription' was World War II Online).  I know several people who anted up for Lord of the Rings Online and still play the game (after having participated in the pre-release beta).  At least a few of those players are huge LotR fans.

I find the idea appealing for the same reasons that Jeff does.  For my part, I don't have the time nor inclination to get back into an MMO (really, I burned myself out on MMOs back with Dragon Realms).  But if you like the source material (Star Trek, Lord of the Rings) and you like MMOs, it's probably a pretty good bet.

I'd guess there are a lot of WoW players who wish they could have bought a Lifetime Subscription back when that got started.  Unless the game tanks and really sucks (and by now you should have a good idea if it really sucks), you should be fine.

I'm pretty indifferent on MW2.  I'm sure it would be fun, but I only have time to play so many games this season, and I'd rather play Borderlands and Left 4 Dead.  Hopefully I'll get around to MW2 at some point, but I'm in no rush.

I'll be getting this game as soon as I can.  I've had a ton of fun with L4D and I expect to do the same with L4D2.  Why people seem to feel entitled to get stuff for free all the time is beyond me.

I still have Chu Chu Rocket and play it with a friend of mine on occasion.  Lots of fun with the right group.  Unfortunately it seems to move to quick for most of my friends.
