IGN had a small tribute to Ryan. It's pretty awesome.

If someone buys this, who does the money go to? Also, how did this go unnoticed for so many years?

There's no audience for that at all (rightfully so because Metroid very clearly doesn't work in 2D).

...I'm having a hard time believing I just read that. The majority of the Metroid series is 2D and most of those are considered classics. The vast, vast majority of "Metroidvania" style games are also in 2D. How the hell does Metroid not work in 2D?

That's clearly sarcasm. It must be, right? No one who has a functioning brain and the slightest experience with a controller could reasonably come to the conclusion that Metroid doesn't work well in 2D.

I don't see why people like 2D Metroid so much. They were terrible games. Metroid works better 3D and makes sense as a first person shooter. I never grew up with Nintendo so I have no nostalgia for their games. I can't find any enjoyment in playing 2D Metroid. I can not understand why people proclaim games like the original Metroid or even Metroid Prime, to be masterpieces. In the case of Metroid Prime I'd say it wasn't even good, let alone a masterpiece. It was an interesting concept but ultimately falls short in comparison to Halo. Metroid Prime has no story, worse controls (not a fault of Retro though), relentless difficulty, a character that controls like a tank, needless backtracking, and a distinct lack of voice acting. As for the original Metroid, it's very much a product of its time.

A modern 2D Metroid could be good but I doubt it would be. Nintendo's approach to game design is still largely stuck in the past and that's not what I would want in a new 2D Metroid game. Nintendo hardly has a great track record for 2D games. I mean 2D Mario is dreadful (though 3D Mario at times has hardly been better). If they took modern game design and applied to 2D Metroid then yes it could be good.

You could post "I'M A TROLL!" in the biggest, most obnoxious letters possible and that still would have been more subtle than this.

Well I'm sorry but I'm not trolling.

I can not think of a single reason for Nintendo to make a new Metroid game. They barely sell and probably don't make Nintendo any money at all. Games are very expensive and there's no reason to spend money making a guaranteed flop. A new Metroid Prime game would sell at least a million copies because there's a small audience but 2D? There's no audience for that at all (rightfully so because Metroid very clearly doesn't work in 2D).

I don't see how this trend "endangers the video game industry." That sounds alarmist and knee jerk nonsense.

I am kind of surprised they are doing this and I've never really heard news about how they're games are doing so from the outside it always seemed like they were doing alright.

I think more than anything video game development has just gotten too expensive for the return and the reason you see a lot of big companies making this shift is because mobile development can be cheaper, shorter cycles, and have significant return on the investment. It does make some sense.

This is very interesting. I wonder what companies we'll see rise up now that most of the big companies are no longer making big budget games. EA and Activision will still make them (at least for now), and TakeTwo/2K is fine as far as I know. Bethesda, maybe to some extent CDPR counts. WBi. Ya, it's weird being able to count the companies on one hand. I suppose you could argue (correctly) that the more companies go away the more other companies make due to the loss of competition.

Hmm, ya very interesting. It's not at all endangering to the industry, but it is interesting. This is called evolution, restructuring, kids. It happens. You'll see it again in your life time, too. It's happened before, but apparently you didn't notice last time (in the 80s).

What I meant is that if these huge publishers shift to mobile then that's going to seriously change the video game industry. I think it'll be for the worse because Konami and Sega are likely to make a fortune on mobile. That will lead other companies to shift over to mobile. These companies will realize that spending the amount they do on console games isn't getting them huge returns and they'll see that mobile games are where the real money is. Why spend $60 million on a console game and only sell 15-20 million copies when you can make much more from cheap mobile games? Either that will happen or video games will continue to get so expensive that we'll see the industry crash because it can't support the bloated costs.

Haven't seen anybody post this yet so I thought I'd make a topic about it. So basically Konami has gone off the deep end and isnow shifting their focus to mobile games. It appears all their franchises including Metal Gear will shift to mobile in the future. While I'm sure they'll produce a few console games, they'll definitely be focusing on mobile. This seems to be an unfortunate trend in the video game industry these days and I think may seriously endanger it. I know Konami isn't a very bright company but it is very worrying to see them focusing on mobile. I'm not even a fan of Konami's games and have only played a few but I'm saddened to see this happening.

I would suspect the next 3D Mario game will be shown off at E3. We know no new main series Mario game is coming out this year but we know one is in development. It's probably going to be a big one on the scale of SMG since it'll have had a lengthy development time.

I've owned DK 64 for nearly 16 years and I've never made it past the first level. I love Donkey Kong and I would love a new 3D game but I don't love this game. For DK's first and only 3D outing it is a terrible game.
