Real Time Strategy games that I Enjoy and Recommend

As the name of this list implies, the games on this list meet two criteria: I enjoy them; and I recommend them. This is not the list in order of how much I enjoy them or how much I recommend them, but rather an average of both criteria. There are many other RTS's that I have played, but most have at least one or two things that bugged me to the point where either I didn't play them all the way through, or I did, but can't bring myself to suggest someone else do the same. As in all things, there's no accounting for taste. Have fun, good luck. =]

  • Unquestionably my favorite RTS, Age of Kings has claimed more hours—more DAYS—of my life than any other strategy game. I've been trying for several minutes now to come up with something brief that would summarize why this game is the best, but I find that I am unable to. There's just too much. If I were to list all of the things that I like about this game, I would basically be making a list of everything there is in the entire game, because I quite literally like EVERYTHING about this game. The map types, the game modes, the civilizations, the buildings, the units, the technologies, the unique features of each civ, the artwork (256 colors have never been used so well) and of course, the scenario editor. The quality of the mod tools is fantastic, and if you browse online, you can find thousands of great multiplayer maps, full campaigns, and even heavily triggered scenarios that play out like RPG's or adventure games. This game does not support the higher resolutions that you're probably accustomed to, but it is still a great-looking game and of course the gameplay is still as great as it ever was. Highly recommended.

  • Age of Mythology is not the most sophisticated game around. It is not the most perfectly balanced competitive game around. It is not the best-looking game around. But it is an absolute blast to play. It is easily one of the most FUN games I've ever played and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone, whether you're looking for an interesting story, good music, artwork or, yes, gameplay, Age of Mythology has you covered.

  • I was going to put the regular game down, but really, this standalone expansion is the best of the series by far. If there is just one complaint I could level against this game it is that the Eldar are horrible, horrible jerks.

  • One of the best new features in AoEIII is unfortunately also the one that keeps me from enjoying it as much as I have enjoyed others in the past. The introduction of the Home City was a pretty radical departure for the series, introducing persistent leveling to your favorite civilizations, with immediate and powerful gameplay modifications tailored by you to enhance and compliment your playstyle. On the one hand, this feature works great and is very enjoyable, as you pick and choose 'cards' before going into each match, which might upgrade your units, or your production, or they might give you free units, or unlock abilities. On the other hand, you'll quickly realize that each civilization has its own Home City and you have to play each and every one of them for dozens of matches if you want to competitively play all of them. If you have one or two favorite civs that you'll be playing all the time then that's no problem; you can focus on your favorites and be happy as a clam. If you enjoy playing them all though, and are a fan of the Random Civ option from previous games, then the removal of that feature and the introduction of persistence may irritate you.

  • (I chose this version of the game because this is the one I have, and it includes the original, so hey…)

Perhaps a controversial choice, due to the lack of base-building, but still an excellent strategy game across the board. Easily the best part of the game for me is the selection and implementation of the fire support options. Whether it's calling in artillery, a strafing run by fighter jets, cluster bombs or napalm, the action never gets stale, as each one serves a very specific purpose depending on what the situation on the ground is, and how close your own troops are to the blast zone. It's tricky to time at first as these support options take a few seconds to arrive, but once you get used to how fast the units move, you can and will turn the game into a high-tech version of Missile Command with cluster bombs and napalm.

  • If there were a random map generator and/or a multiplayer mode, this would be the perfect game for lovers of B-Movies, Sci-Fi thrillers from the golden age, and classic Bond movies. As it is, it's a fantastic sandbox for a rainy day's diversion.

  • When the demo for this game came out, the family computer was running at 33MHz, which is technically below the system requirements. So... I never managed to get more than ten minutes into the game before crashing to desktop. But it was so good! I loved this game to death. It was at the time the most gorgeous game I had ever seen, and the quality of the animations was amazing. The gameplay was the most engrossing of any I had played up to that point, though sadly I must admit that it feels clunky today. The expansion added the ability to queue units and cycle through idle villagers (brand new features at the time!), so the game is still remarkably playable today, but despite my love for the game and my personal history with it (the very first CD-based game I owned! and yes, we got a new computer so I was eventually able to play it properly), too much time has passed and too many features were not yet invented so I can't give it the top spot in this particular list.

  • A very solid RTS with plenty of features and great production value. I just wish the maps were more interesting and varied, or that there were a random map feature. As it is, with the lighting filters and textures used in most of the game, almost every map looks bland.

  • Holds distinction as the only Blizzard RTS I ever enjoyed playing. Has excellent graphics, artwork and audio design, with an engaging plot and easy mod/scenario tools.

  • FIRST THING YOU MUST DO BEFORE STARTING THE GAME FOR THE FIRST TIME! Turn off your speakers. THEN open the game and go into the options menu and TURN OFF ALL MUSIC OPTIONS! Turn your speakers back on and enjoy a pretty decently put together RTS with a heavy emphasis on turrets and simple rock-paper-scissors action.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU LISTEN TO ANY OF THE MUSIC!!!!
