My best advice is to network, network, network. New York is not an awful place to begin a career. You just have to be driven and network. There's so much opportunity here. It's either NYC or LA/SF for creative types. Other cities don't compare. They're all expensive. Sounds like all you care about is getting a big house. Worry about that later. Work on your career. Tell your gf to save up a few grand and move. Break out of her comfort zone. Take some risks. Don't be afraid to fail. I went to art school myself in Philly and was disheartened to find no jobs in my field after I graduated. I worked at EB corporate for a little while and hated it. I didn't want to end up like all the losers I worked with. So one day I just decided to save up a few grand move to NYC. I had no job lined up. I just moved. I stayed with friends while I looked for an apt and jobs. It took me a couple months but I landed one. After I got my foot in the door, I have no problem finding a job.
I always found the Elder Scroll games boring. Skyrim looks like a much needed graphical improvement especially the character models, but we shall see about the story and gameplay. Also the modern quick-menus are already ruining the game.

Microsoft's conference was terrible. They spent 99% of their conference talking about the Kinect. All their speakers were horrible. Sony's conference was just as bad but at least they talked more about game titles coming out this year. They started out strong with Uncharted 3 then everything went to crap until they showed off the NGP and announced the price. Both companies need to abandon motion controls now. Nintendo is already abandoning them with their next console. They also need to stop targeting families and dubebros for their audiences and leaving out the hardcore gamers with disposable incomes who buy most of their stuff. It's ruining gaming.
This E3 so far has been the most depressing E3 in years. Seriously Halo 4 the only high profile game Microsoft could show off after spending 99% of their conference on the Kinect? This is why review scores/stars should be done away with. Ratings should be more like Buy It, Rent It, or Forget it, etc..
That's just another type of score. A reviewer's opinion represented by one word instead of a number. You should just go by the reviewer's actual review. "Buy it, Rent it, Forget it" is worse. That's basically telling people what to do.
What Cynical said was basicly a 1-3 stars rating, only like MiniPato said, it's even worse because Buy it, Rent it, Forget it, just open reviewers up for even more criticism from the community.
