I don't want to make a thread, but I got vote-banned after i called for a vote to skip a map (which passed).... and i would appreciate being unbanned. My username is "shaxe".
There seems to be a fair bit of hate from players for the awesome DOLEMITE loading screen, I can understand not wanting to have anything to do with these kinds of people though.
Not really. I depends heavily on the game. Many games these days are actually more CPU-bound than GPU-bound (largely due to the fact that they are ported from console code). Skyrim is a good example, so is Assassin's Creed Revelations. Also, most games still only utilize 2 cores meaning that overclocking can make a difference. In the case of Skyrim in particular, it also seems to utilize a lot of CPU cycles in the decompression process (i.e. increased CPU speed decreases load times). Also, as long as the voltage and temperature is kept below a certain level, there is no real effect on the lifetime of an overclocked CPU. In fact, the only reason to buy a 2500K vs. a 2500 would be to overclock since Intel has unlocked the multipliers specifically so that users can overclock.
You will get a better frame rate in terms of numbers, sure, but i was more talking about a noticeable difference. A modern quad core CPU handles just about every current game easily enough to not be a bottleneck and providing a decent GPU is present then will always give a smooth frame rate.
Yeah, if you know what you are doing you can do a safe overclock no matter what chip it is, but that didn't really sound like the case here, so i just wanted to put the argument forward that it isn't really worth it these days, if you have never done it before, as seems to be the case here. But I guess it can be fun to play with that stuff so... *shrug*
Unless you are rendering video or compiling code, you won't notice much difference at all in performance when OCing a quad (or more) core CPU, especially not in today's games... you'll just be decreasing the lifespan of it for not real gain, I say don't bother.
I'd be so bold as to add one more piece to the equation. Not only do we need an existing technological society in our case, we also need one capable of travel between systems. Considering that we ourselves have yet to develop this, I'd wager the chances of that are slimmest of all. No, we have not been visited.
He also leaves out the fact that these intelligent beings have to exist at the same time as us. It is often an over-looked variable in these discussions.
The only aliens worth a damn have time travel capabilities, so this isn't an issue.
Their promo artwork and writing is so great. If you haven't already, check out the Saxton Hale comics.
The submission process for items is so much better now. Before this update you just uploaded a couple of rar files through the browser and got no notification that it got through or anything.
