15 games that will soon be mine: part 1.

Sponsored by Muramasa: The Demon Blade, the next hardcore Wii game nobody will buy.

I'm not known for being the most original person on the planet or the most creative... and this next set of blogs proves my theory.  Giant Bomb user and blogger extraordinaire, EightBitWarrior, has announced to the world the games he is looking forward to in the coming months and years in a 3- part blog and I am totally ripping it off.  And before you judge, remember the whole top 30 greatest games fad way back when?  So join me as I start with #15 and count all the way down to #1.

15. Bit.Trip Space

What you looking at?
What you looking at?

The Bit.Trip games have yet to disappoint me with their colorful retro goodness and punishing difficulty so I am eagerly anticipating the announcement of the next game in the 6-part series.  Space is not the official name just yet, but if the cryptic message in July's Nintendo Power is accurate, the next game will be Space.  Nobody outside of Gaijin Games knows really what the gameplay will be like, but chances are it will be crazy old-school.

14. Muramasa: The Demon Blade

Such a pretty, pretty game.
Such a pretty, pretty game.

You'll notice that a number of my choices will be more artsy in nature than most on the market... and Muramasa: The Demon Blade is probably the most beautiful of the games on my list.  The game Muramasa seems to get compared to the most is Odin Sphere which I haven't played, and I'm not familiar with 2D action RPGs in general so I'm kind of going into this game also blindly... however I have seen some footage of the game and it looks straight-up good.  I can expect myself and 4 other people in America to buy Muramasa, unfortunately.

13. Night Game

Another notch on the indie game list.
Another notch on the indie game list.

Nicalis is making the first appearance in my list which is saying a lot for a small developer who is generating a lot of buzz for Cave Story.  It looks like the bastard child of Marble Madness and World of Goo, and I absolutely love both those games.  It's heavy on the black and quite dark for a puzzle game, Night Game looks to be a worthy challenge.  I can go for some more physics-based puzzle-platformers.

12. Spyborgs

Spyborgs brings the heat.
Spyborgs brings the heat.

Spyborgs made its debut last year to almost zero fanfare since nobody gave a shit about the toonish look so Bionic Games had to revamp the whole style to something a bit more Ratchet & Clankish and since some Ratchet & Clank devs are working on Spyborgs, it makes sense.  The only problem I see is that I was one of the few that preferred the previous cartoony look with the weird minigames and the more humorous tone.  Still, Spyborgs looks pretty impressive and I'll just have to wait and see if it lives up to my expectations.

11. Cave Story

Nicalis once again and this time it's Cave Story, the 2D Metroidvania game that I can play for free right now on my PC, but Nicalis has decided to update the game with better graphics and more stuff.  Cave Story looks almost like a classic 16-bit game and that's why I'm all excited.  Yeah, I'm nostalgic for a recent game I haven't played.  I'm a piece of work, ain't I?

You have reminded me that some of these games exist, meaning that they must be added to my Christmas list. I'd do that, but I refuse to celebrate a holiday that commemorates Satan Claus. Anyway...*starts pounding blunt object into hand to look tough*.....damn it, that hurts! I was gonna look tough, threatening you for not using mine, but....Christ, man....ow....

Muramasa looks amazing but I can't help but imagine how the sprites would look in HD.

Hush your mouth before you get your graphics-whore-ass bitched out by one of those people that don't appreciate the prospect of nicer looking graphics. :P

I'll be one of those four, I guess. The Wii's gonna have some pretty good games this year. At least in my eyes.

@Dalai: yeah sorry that's kind of what I meant.  None of those games appeal to me, not that they are bad games.

I'm actually super-psyched for Muramasa and I'm feeling pretty jazzed for Spyborgs, though my purchasing of Spyborgs will definitely be on a "see reviews first" type of basis. All those games look pretty slick. As an aside, did you mean for them all to be from the Wii? Did I miss something in your blog intro? Are the next two entries gonna be for PS3 and then 360???

@ververdan0226: Well seeing as I don't own a PS3 or 360, my list will pretty much be Wii and PC games.  It just so happens that the list was Wii-heavy early on.  I'm definitely looking into several PC games coming in the next several months.

You don't have either of the main nest-gen consoles?? Rough, but I guess you can get by with a PC and a few Wii games.... Are you thinking of getting a PS3 now that they have a price cut or an Elite if (more like when) they drop it to $300? You're missing out on some pretty cool games this holiday season...

Oh cave story, when will you come to us? You know I have a shiny Jefferson sitting in my wallet for you. Why do you tease me so? Why can't you be more like your cousin Muramasa? It is arriving at my house when it comes out. What's your excuse?

Muramasa looks great.  I guess I will have to hock up my Wii for that game.

Personally I find as I'm getting older I've kind of "regressed" in regards to what games I'm interested in. The wave of stylized arcady titles for the various online stores are way more appealing to me than fullblown AAA-titles these days, and for that purpose, the Wii is pretty solid. I really like some PSN and XBLA stuff too but I'm not gonna buy three consoles for stuff like that, plus Wii has the Virtual Console.
And whenever I feel the urge to play some graphical masterpiece of violence, it's most likely an FPS and I'd rather cut my dick off than play a shooter with a gamepad. I grew up playing with mouse and keyboard (PS2 was my very first console) and I'm not ready to abandon that control scheme just yet.

But if I were to buy a current-gen (next-gen hasn't been a viable phrase since 2004) console it would definately be the PS3, it has way cooler exclusives coming up and PSN is pretty awesome from what I understand. And it's not a hastily built pile of shit. But since I've decided to boycott Sony until they add backwards compatibility again that's never gonna happen.

EDIT: Sorry to hijack your question there, just answered since I also "only" own a PC and a Wii.

@fuzzyponken: Awww snap... I understand where you're coming from though. 'Specially in terms of the gamepad thing it's understandable, but I like a gamepad more... maybe not because it's better, but because it's what I'm used to and it definitely works well enough. I think the whole backwards compatability thing is a little stupid and childish of people (IMO, I don't mean to offend you, just a belief I have, please don't hold it against me, I mean well  :)  ). I can somewhat understand it if you don't have it, but pretty much 95% of gamers do at this point so it seems like. Games like Brutal Legend, Uncharted 2, Ratchet, Heavy Rain definitely make a console like the PS3 a great choice. And the 360's really cool as wel with some exclusivesl. It's awesome that you prefer PC, but don't  you feel like you're missing a lot with a lot of these console exclusives?? Plus, you guys get somewhat shafted by lazy ports... I know this whole paragraph may make me sound stupid and ignorant of your specific gaming needs, but I feel like console gamers without a gaming PC are getting more than PC gamers without a console nowadays. Sad I know.  :(

All I'm saying is that being a dedicated gamer like I am, I don't know if I could hold out as long as you knowing that there are such a vast amount of console exclusives (that aren't FPSes... which handle better on PC). I think a system would be a wise investment and the backwards compatibility thing shouldn't hold you back. Either way, the next 12 months are gonna be amazing for gamers on any platform (hell, maybe even Wii).  :)

@ververdan0226: I've never really felt as though I need to be in the forefront of gaming news. I bought my PS2 in 2007 and have since then accumulated 20-30 games or so that are all awesome. I've read reviews, listened to my friends talk about games and I have a pretty good idea of what the classics are for that system. Overhyped games usually get somewhat inflated reviews at launch and then turn out to be not so good down the line and I try to stay away from those. I can't spend 60 bucks on a game that I might not like, money is tight right now and it's really satisfying buying PS2 games for 10-15 bucks that I know I'll love.
I'll *probably* get a PS3 around the time PS4 ships after I've properly researched the platform, if there's enough of a back catalog with games I'd like and both the system and the games are alot cheaper. I bought my Wii this year, as I said, mostly because of downloadables and Virtual Console, but I'm finding more and more that I really enjoy some Wii exclusives like Super Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess. The idea of more cutesy games that aren't packed with blood and violence is pretty new to me and I'm learning that they actually can be pretty good.

Being mainly a PC gamer is rough these days, yeah. More often than not it's a fucking 360 port, "PRESS Y TO JUMP", yeah yeah fuck you developer. And the PC version of GTAIV made me sooo disappointed. Luckily, my two favorite genres happen to be FPS and RTS games, and I know I'll always prefer both of those on PC.

Anyway, yeah there's some awesome games for the PS3 and 360, and I can only hope the multiplatform ones will have decent PC ports, but there's awesome exclusives coming out for the Wii as well that I'm really stoked for. Plus, Diablo 3

Bit. Trip and Spyborgs really don't interest me that much, but the others look kind of yummy.
