Game of the Year: By The Numbers

As someone who likes math, I decided to break down this years video 10 ten lists ans see how they compare with the editorial team. Every game got points depending on how high it was one every editors list. One point goes to the number 10 game and 10 points go to the number 1 game on the list. I also have included Drew's and Alex's top 10 lists into a separate list, so that we could see, how they would influence the end result. So here are top 10 list form the editors:

Now, before we get to the end results, I want to stress, that this is not a post about what should have been the overall top 10 game list of Giant Bomb. This is just math, based on their personal favorites. And there is a difference between liking a game and being critical about it. Also, I think they did a good job of explaining their point of view during their end of the year deliberations podcast. So, with that in mind, I present to you the final lists (the numbers in brackets are the amount of points for each game):

After 10'th position, both lists start to have a lot of ties, although the simple math list starts having them at the end. The interesting thing is that Portal 2 was the only game that appeared on everyone's lists, while Saints Row: The Thirds was on every of the five judges lists. Some games got a lot of point because they were high on someone's list, like Catherine being number 8, because it was Patrick's second favorite game this year. Hope this was somewhat interesting for you to read.

I thought the same thing before doing this. But searching the forums did not reveal anything, so decided to make this post.

Nah, I think someone just did something very similar with the Community GOTY lists. Shame I can't place the user. My brain is telling me that it's but I can't actually remember.

Another interesting set of numbers. I still don't quite understand how Brad, Ryan and Patrick managed to argue Skyrim to the top slot over Portal 2 and Saints, but it's interesting to see that Alex and Drew were probably that game's biggest supporters considering its twenty-point jump under their jurisdiction. Again, I do totally think that Skyrim is a legitimate choice and it'll show up high on my personal list going up later today, and I hold no ill temperance towards its many GOTY awards. I just don't know how it earned GOTY here.

With that, I'm almost ready to move on. I need to edit together my GOTY podcast and put up any Nerf'd Top 10's I can get, but otherwise I'm ready to let 2011 head on out!

Not I - though I have posted several times in support of the view that their whole debate seemed to be mostly "SR3 is amazing and Skyrim is pretty good, but mostly only exceptional because nobody else is really doing _that_ right now . . . so Skyrim, everybody!". I just felt like the results contradicted the conversation and sentiment around the GB table.

@dantey: Yeah, yours is a little more involved. It wasn't a huge thread. Only 2 pages.

@SongWriter1987: The problem is that Ryan (And Vinny too, I think) hadn't played Skyrim before the GotY stuff started, which is why it COULDN'T have been on their top ten lists.

@Claude: I checked it out. Glad to see, that our results match, but still feel a bit bumbed-out, that I was late. But, glad to see, that someone also was interested with the math behind of all it.

i can't imagine considering doing something like this, but I commend your effort...both of you

Wow, looks like I underestimated SR3...
