Top Ten Games of 2010

Remember that this list is ordered by my preferences, not necessarily by quality.

List items

  • I love platformers, and they don't really get better than this. I'm not sure if anything in the genre (at least in 3D) can surpass it. Its beautiful art and immensely memorable tunes are as fantastic as its foundations in fun, creativity, and challenge. Each and every level in this content-packed adventure is exciting without repeating itself and has a satisfying difficulty to boot. Basically, the game is fun at its best.

  • This game's universe felt alive to me. The main story isn't so compelling, but the amazing characters, their backgrounds, the writing, and various options in dialogue and actions kept me 100% invested. I completed just about every side mission in ME2 and enjoyed the entirety of my 60+ hours in the game aside from plannet-scanning for resources. Awesome biotic powers also make combat a blast. It has one of the best final levels I've played in a game. I hate the word "epic," but, dammit, that's what this game is.

  • Heavy Rain is an important experiment into game storytelling that, for the most part, works excellently. One of the most emotionally engaging games I've played.

  • I didn't play this game, I watched the Endurance Run of it on this site. I still had an experience with it though! The game looks ancient and broken, but in a strange way, it adds to the charm of the game, since it's so fully aware of that. An absolutely phenomenal story ensures that there's no game quite like it, and I think it's awesome.

  • The best of the Layton games because of its great story and its truly exceptional ending. The puzzles are also as fantastic as ever. Amazing game.

  • This game's insanely easy, but it's so full of joy, fun, and cuteness that it's absolutely impossible for me not to love it. The yarn aesthetic is one of the most brilliant visual designs I've seen in a game.

  • It may be short, but this disturbing ride provides a creepy atmosphere and many surprises. Its puzzles certainly make you think, with proper experimentation they're never frustrating. The ending is unfortunately pretty bad, but every other part of it is amazing!

  • Peace Walker has a great story, but not an infectious one like the rest of the series. Still, there's a lot of awesome tactical espionage operations to execute, and Mother Base makes you feel like you really are maintaining your own army.

  • Much improved gameplay this return trip to Rapture, and a good story to boot. But it simply doesn't have the lasting power and novelty of the first game to put it higher on this list.

  • I love how accessible this game is. Anyone can play it and enjoy it, and trying to improve your high scores is insanely addicting. Pac-man at its best.
