Looks okay. Looks competent. Looks like they made more Civ. Kind of makes me wish they would try something a little more daring with the series. I'm guessing that Beyond Earth was that experiment and it didn't work out as well as they were hoping, but I hope that doesn't put an end to the experimentation.

The political interactions with the other leaders seems to be just about the same as in Civ 5, and those were quite shallow in my opinion. For something that is supposed to be about intrigue, scheming and strategy, it felt more like accounting. 5 good points - 3 bad points = friend. Same goes for trading and economy.

As Vinny mentioned and I have always felt, having religion and culture as two different systems, trying to spread both around without any interaction between the two has always seemed to me like having systems for the sake of having systems. Doesn't look like they made many changes to that either.

It's good that they have taken building out from just one tile and spread it around the map a little bit. I've always found it irritating not being able to build harbour on a coastal tile within my territory, or a canal, or use rivers as roads for boat transport, but it doesn't look like that is possible in this version either. Having airports outside of cities would be nice too. Or hotels and something like tourist attraction sites. I wonder how tourism works in this version?

Is there migration?

Knowing the release cycle of Civ 5 it might be worth waiting for the inevitable expansions.

It's interesting how Vinny keeps asking whether you can automate this or automate that. This is an indication that those aspects of the game are not enjoyable (at least for him) and I would agree. Having to micromanage your workers can sometimes be annoying. Like if you're fighting a world ending battle and you get interrupted from making battle plans only to tell your worker to go build a lumber mill which you are never going to use anyway. It would be interesting to see how the new worker system WORKS out (pun intended).

Hmm ... strange. I really like Civ but I might be the only person here who is not very excited for the new iteration of Civ. Doesn't seem different enough. Not sure if there is any meaningful difference in the gameplay systems.

@layden: How is a neural network applicable to this game?

Already a better game than No Man's Sky.

For anyone who cares - yes this is Australia. Surfer's Paradise looks very much like Surfer's Paradise. The 12 Apostles look like the 12 Apostles (but not the sand, those cars would just sink in it). The environments look Australian. That one announcer guy sounds like a British guy doing an Australian accent though. If you wanted to use "THE" Australian car it would be a Holden Commodore ute not the Mad Max car.

Needs more roos and screaming cockatoos.

@scribble: No. I didn't realize they recorded the whole thing already. I though they were just doing like a weekly recording session and splitting it up like they normally do with Dan coming over Skype or something. Does it matter? Does it make it any better?

They don't owe me anything, I'm just saying this was not a good idea.

PS. Marathon sessions of Shenmue sound like the next best thing since water boarding.

This episode is literally a waste of time.

I hate to be that guy but I just wanted to say that this endurance run is kind of lame. Was it Jeff that said that acknowledging something as boring/not fun, doesn't make it any more entertaining/more fun? Maybe it's time to take a step back and admit this was not a good idea and stop? Isn't there a better feature you could be doing? How about some Kerbal? How about some adventure game? How about anything else?

Listening to Dan sing while staring at a watch go slowly round and round is a pretty good simulation of hell. This is "lol so randumb XD" tier of humour. Are people actually enjoying this? Is it their agony that is supposed to be pleasurable? Is it the fact that they keep flogging a dead horse every time they say there is nothing to do? Are we supposed to be trying to figure out if Dan is actually an idiot or just pretending?

By all means keep doing what you're doing but this whole feature is kind of lackluster.

@dovah: I see myself playing this game if and only if I'm only sitting down in front of my computer to listen to music as a primary goal, with the game being secondary.

I just wish there was something more to it than "look at this generic terrain/animal/mineral". From what I saw in this quick look, the variety is mainly cosmetic in nature. Go to planet X, you get mushrooms growing there. Go to planet Y, you get grass growing there and so on. This has no 'tangible' effect. I think what I wanted out of this game was go to planet X, your space plane will fly differently due to the gravity, atmospheric density, composition, velocity etc than on planet Y. This could imply that in order to explore planet X you need to go get a "shmagawotsit" or you just need to be a good pilot. My issues with this game aren't just limited to the flight mechanics, I only use them as an example of the relative shallowness of the gameplay systems.

I'm afraid that the generic geometry is only interesting for a limited time until you get accustomed to what the software can produce. That 'new' bird will look a lot like that other bird you saw on that other planet, and then the exploration (which is the main draw for this game) will cease to be so interesting. How long will this high last I wonder?

I don't think generically generated materials are interesting in and of themselves. They become interesting only if the player has something engaging to do with them. In that regard they become an endless stage upon which the player can act. Think Civ and randomly generated terrain. In this game, there is plenty of random material, but it is of no import because there is nothing worthwhile that can be done with it.

It is a nice tech demo though and it's pretty at times. But not that water. That vertex stitching and those surface mechanics could use a little love. Also the AI navigation grid seems rather limited. Computers are hard.

Forgive the rant, it's mainly an opportunity for me to theorize as I am a programmer and I meddle with these things often enough that I consider them important. Silly, I know.

What do people think? Is this a legitimate concern/observation?

This game looks boring. It doesn't look like there is anything meaningful to do. None of the game play systems seem to be particularly deep or original. The exploration doesn't seem to be very rewarding. There may be an infinite number of planets to explore but if all you find is generic resources, generic outposts and generic text blurbs of vague sci-fi, then what is the point of exploring more than one? It feels like a random asset generator demo with a few rudimentary game play systems tacked on. It makes a pretty cool music visualizer or a neat screen saver but engaging it is not.

I don't get it. What is the draw of this game? Do people just get more of a kick from the game play systems that are there? I remember this being the game that I was the most hyped for the year they debut it at E3, but now that it is here, it seems kind of ... bland?

PS. It seems like Dan fell into some bizarre behavioral and educational sink hole sometime around his 10th year of life and never got out. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just weird. I'm sure he has his (limited) areas of expertise though.

Damn that studio is closterfobic. Vinny's basement has more space! How are you going to fit a whole set of shelves in there?

Well, that poster better have a very fancy frame worthy of Dracula's name.
