ASIAN Movies that I think you should see!

I already wrote a description for this Blogpost, but Giantbomb had a senior moment and I lost at all. So, these are some Asian movies that I think you should watch. If you want to know about even more Asian movies that are great, go to IMDB.com and look for a user named ebossert. He's not me. PM him your email and he'll send you an excel spreadsheet and 4 word documents containing practically every Asian movie that's ever happened. I did, and I'm super glad I did. I will probably add to this list, especially if I watch some good, non-Asian films.

Oldboy

         Oldboy is my personal favorite of Chan Wook-Park's "Vengeance Trilogy". This one stars Oh-Daesu, a lousy alcohol father who is kidnapped and imprisoned in a hotel room for 14 years(I can't remember if that's how long exactly). He is finally released one day, where he dedicates the rest of his life to finding out who it was who kidnapped him. With a surprisingly good romantic story, with some twists here and there and an ending you won't forget, Oldboy is a great movie that everyone will enjoy. I mean, if they're a little open minded.

Shutter[Thai, not the American Remake]

 Do not watch the shitty remake. It adds some random sex scenes that add nothing to the plot (and also aren't sexy), and does every scary scene worse. Shutter is a Thai movie in witch the man character starts seeing a ghostly figure after accidentally running down a women on the road one night. His photos keep coming back messed up when they're developed, and his friends start acting strange as well. Ending is great, jump scares are great, and the leads girlfriend is quite attractive. Good ass movie.

Battle Royale

If they remake this movie I will not be a happy camper. Battle Royale has a plot that will hook you in immediately. Every year, one high school class that has been particularly rowdy is chosen to participate in the "Battle Royale". In this, the class full of students (plus a few "transfer students") are drugged and taken to a secret island to fight to the death. They get a random assortment of weapons, a map of the area, and the knowledge that they must kill all their friends and classmates in three days or there collars will go off and they will die. Good stuff in this movie, lot's of drama. It's not a gorefest, but there's some cool scenes. And the weapons some kids got stuck with are great.

Happiness of the Katakuris [And by default, the Quiet Family]

Happiness of the Katakuris is a ridiculous spoof of the Quiet Family. While it's not necessary to watch the Quiet Family first, it does heighten the enjoyment. In both movies, the family starts an inn that's kind of in the middle of nowhere. They're having no luck getting people to stay the night, but when they finally do, the first visitor dies. Mortified, the family decides to bury the body in the backyard, because otherwise their reputation would be ruined. Every following visitor at the hotel also dies. Leading to more bodies being buried. The Quiet Family does this pretty seriously. Happiness of the Katakuris, however, fills this with dance numbers, musical zombies, claymation, and more! As terrible as it may sound, it's a hilarious spoof of the fantastic original. Both are great watches!

Hard Boiled

Chow Yun Fat shoots people in this movie. A lot of people. For a long time. The final hospital shootout is over 40 minutes long. If that interests you in the slightest, check out this movie.

Kill zone

This movie features Donnie Yen. If you care about martial arts movies at all, you should know about Donnie Yen. He was in Iron Monkey, as well as many other films. This movie is more of a drama than a martial arts movie, but when the fighting does happen, it's explosive and brutal. Featuring a unique use of ground fighting and wrestling moves (lots of Judo throws and trips in this one), this movie's action really stands out. Doesn't hurt that the story is good either. Also, the ending is refreshing.

There you have it! Hopefully at least one person will be interested in this and check out some of these movies. I would have had pictures for all the movies, but I can never get the images to work right on here.

No love for Ichi the Killer or Audition?

I'd add The Devil's Backbone.

@odintal: I loved Ichi, and hated Audition. I think if I watched Audition again, though, I'd like it. I was expecting a horror masterpiece, and got a romance with some torture at the end.

And I really, really need to see the Devi's Backbone. If I added another movie I'd add Pans Labyrinth just so I'd have something outside of Asia.

@davidwitten22:   I'd recommend it--it's a really fast read and replaces terrible acting with snappy dialogue.  I thought it was the best thing ever in 7th grade, and it still stands up decently to me eight years later.  It's pulpy and gratuitous, which I think is okay.  Not everything I read has to be Hemingway.

Also, if you're ever in the mood for non-Asian foreign films, Let the Right One In is an amazing Swedish film that I recommend to anyone and everyone.

@Pox22: I heard about Let The Right One In. I haven't felt like watching horror movies for a while though. I've been on more of a martial arts movie kick. Anyways, if a movie is good I don't care where it's from. The reason I watch a lot of Asian stuff is that it's easily accessible and I hate documents full of reviews of them.

Also, Nochnor Dozor made me never want to watch a Russian film ever again.

@odintal: Of what, Battle Royale?

I know they've been wanting to remake it for a long time, but that it's never really taken off. Hey, they already remade A Tale of Two Sisters and named it "'The Uninvited". That hurt my soul.

@odintal: Hollywood is so quick on remakes now. I mean, according to IMDB it came out in 2008! It's worse than when [REC] was remade only a few years later. Man Hollywood, get on your game and stop remaking everything in English and come up with something good on your own.

You get extremes of people who recomend foreign films to random people they don't know.  Either it's "Le Artiste" who makes a living from bottling their own farts and selling it to others because they think it smells so good, or, "Le Dudererer" who will recomend you the gaudiest clap-trap that looks and sounds as if it was designed in a dimension where real people were anime and their brains were replaced with 56k, they will implore you to view the tripe under the pretention that there is this "one scene", proceeding to describe the complexities of drilling a hole in someone's face with all the comprehension of reality that a 5 year old must possess.

I would be the former.  Watch La Haine.

@davidwitten22:

Yo check out some foreign films I think YOU should see

Every film by Akira Kurosawa, because they're all good
And some by Takeshi Kitano:

  • Violent Cop
  • Sonatine
  • Hana-Bi

If you choose to only see one from the above list, pick Violent Cop by Kitano. Astonishing film.

@Clembo: Which one am I? And I guess it's a good thing I didn't recommend Riki-Oh: The Story of Riki then. That movie is terrible, but the over-the-top everything is awesome. I'd like to think I'm a little bit of both. Also I IMDBed your movie and couldn't find it so...

@RoujinX: I liked Rashomon in concept, but ended up being bored by the actual movie. Is Seven Samurai better? I know it's a hell of a lot longer (I'm only comparing because they're both Kurosawa). Also, I can't find Gozu anywhere! I may look for Nikita, and there's about 100 movies name metropolis, so...

Gozu was directed by  Takashi Miike if that helps. Same dude who did Ichi the Killer. He also plays a voice in the Animal Crossing movie?!
And yes, Seven Samurai is a hell of a lot better than Rashomon. As is Yojimbo.
By Metropolis, I mean the Fritz Lang 1927 original. But, that may be a little too far-gone.

I've seen a lot of Miike, even the super weird shit like Bijiti-Q(oh god...) and his episode of Masters of Horror. I usually enjoy his stuff (loved One Missed Call the first time, but the sequals and the remake were terrible), so I've been wanting to see Gozu for at least a year. I like Miike, though he's pretty fucked up sometimes. I've been meaning to see a lot of Kurosawa, like Seven Samurai and Yojimbo and Ran. I've been meaning to watch some really old stuff, but 1927 might be too old for me...

@davidwitten22: You're off to an amazing start then because Ip Man is probably my favorite of his films.

Flash Point and Seven Swords were good too.

My friend is an avid hater of Dragon Tiger Gate, but I still love it lol. It feels cheesy at times, but I don't think that movie was supposed to be taken seriously to begin with.

I also believe he did the choreography for Princess Blade, but I'm not sure. Anywho, the part of that movie I did see was pretty decent, but I never finished it.

I hate how Holywood remakes foreign movies, sometimes just years after the origonal was released. Seriously, if some stupid english speaking person is to lazy to watch the origonal in its native language, then chances are if it's truly a good movie they would be too ignorant to appreciate it.

They even remade Death at a funeral! A move in english just afew years after it was made, and ruining all of it in the process.

I've seen all of those actually.  Maybe you should have said "Asian films."

What about Goodbye Lenin, La Pianiste, Der Tunnel, Im Juli, Kontroll, I could go on...  I could name a ton of great Asian films as well.

If it helps, Metropolis was probably the 2nd sci-fi film ever created, following that 'Journey to the Moon' one where the moon is a giant smiley face. It follows the story of the son of a wealthy industrialist who finds himself lost in the underground of the city, where the workers toil. There's a LOT of visually present allegory (feeding human beings into a giant mechanical monster), but stills that come out of the photography are the beautiful part of the movie. I keep a collection of them on my compuer for desktop backgrounds (yeah, I said it!)

Basically, if you ever want to see the grandaddy of Bladerunner, Dark City, or really the entire sci-fi genre in film, check out Metropolis.

Oldboy is a great movie, and Battle Royale has some minor issues, but I personally enjoyed it, mostly because I like the theme.

There are other great movies you should put in here, especially cult movies, or if you want, some old ones. (Kurosawa lol)

@zudthespud: Go for it. I never said they had to be Asian. They all did end up being Asian, but I never said I wouldn't watch movies from other countries/continents. I probably should have put Asian Movies in the title, but I didn't realize until afterwards that they were all of Asian descent. Sorry? And feel free to recommend me anything, that's the point of this blog. Not just for me, but for other people who may stumble upon it. Have you seen Son of Rambow? I've thought about watching it but haven't got around to it.

@simian:
 I heard that Izo was pretty terrible.

@Unknown_Pleasures: I have it. Still need to watch it. I have a feeling I'll love it, it sounds great and has gotten great reviews.

@MonetaryDread: Those both look pretty cool. I'll look them up.
