Titles that have changed/refined the way I view video games

More or less in order as they affected me.

Lots of stuff from around the 90's at first, around when I first started picking up games, and I take a step back and play games from a little before that. Then, as I get into newer games, the titles become farther and fewer apart, as my views towards games begins to take shape.

The last two are listed last, however, because they are titles that go above and beyond the rest.

Edit: Whoops, forgot to include Planescape Torment, and I stupidly made this a non-ordered list. I'll get to fixing it sometime.

  • My first rated M game.

    Well, that's not true. I remember my cousins playing Killer Instinct when I was super young, and telling me to look away 'cause it was too violent

    I probably never even would have gotten this game, but my cousin gave me his Xbox and all his games

  • This game means so much to me, personally.

    I cannot begin to describe how unparalleled an experience this is. There's something about this game that transcends time, thus it is the one of the few post-SNES games that I consider to be timeless.

    And to think, it all started with a buddy of mine, telling me there was a game that let you date anime girls and have implied sex.

  • This game spoke to me in a way I didn't think possible.

    I still can't fully articulate what about this game resonated with me the way it did.

  • Once, this game made me feel like I was another human being's prey, and it's a memory I hold dear.

    The only game to make me feel genuine fear from an online interaction. An authentic fight or flight situation

  • My co-op experience in this game is like nothing less.

  • This game made me take notice of the indie scene.

    It made me realize that indies could provide something as substantial as any of the big names out there

  • Made my steam account for this, and in doing so, introduced me to the wonderful world of PC gaming

    Led to me building a PC

  • Played way more of this game than I probably should have

    It was at this point that I found myself interested in video games beyond just something I'd pick up now and again

  • First Zelda game. I'm sure everyone remembers their first

  • Made a pretty big impression on the way I viewed games, considering it was the first I remember playing.

    Great music

    Great controls

    Great graphics

    Great level design

    It wasn't until about a year ago that I finally did everything there was to do in that game

  • For the longest time, this was my definition of a good game.

    It had active combat, it had noticeable progression, it had an awesome Japanese intro, and it had characters I loved and recognized (more so the FF characters than the Disney)

  • A couple years after Sonic Adventure, I gave this a shot and promptly quit. A few more years, and I finally realized what made a good Sonic game

  • You can keep you Super Smash whatevers.

    I have not found a more fun, over the top, party game that can compare to this little gem

    Played the game until my Dreamcast tragically broke

    Still my definition of good multi-player fun

    This game's....not very good.

    At least, not as good as I remember it being as a child. Regardless, it did a lot in shaping my views of what a "good game" was

    Fell in love with the hub-based world

    Sonic became my favorite character for a long time

  • First time I played a game with characters that could stand on their own. One of my biggest problems with Jrpg's to this day, is that individual characters can rarely hold their own, in regards to personality. FF6 was never afraid to split the party up. It explored as many different dynamics and interactions as it could.

    The characters were also given quite a lot of individuality in battle.

  • The game, itself, is solid. It shines in every facet of its being-- its music, its gameplay, its graphics, its pacing

    The moment where you fight the dragon tank really opened my eyes to how cinematic some games could be, even without taking control away

    The concept of recruiting somebody you previously fought was difficult to comprehend

  • I played this game when I was still rather young, and it felt like something was...off. Hmmm, could it be the fact that the game played nothing like Mario? Nahhh

    Introduced the idea of not receiving games in the West

  • Very tight controls.

    The idea of the bonus armor was mind-blowing to me, and I'd feel like I was overpowered by going out of my way to get the optional stuff

    First time I gave a shit about dialogue in a game

  • I remember my family would get together and play Tetris. Moms, dads, uncles, aunts, and cousins all shouting at the same time

    It was very loud

    But thanks to this, I was introduced to the idea of competitive multi-player
