I feel so alone in the world of gaming. It feels like no one enjoys anything I enjoy.

GOTY 2012

It struck me. Realising I actually haven't played many of the games released in 2012, or at least not as many as I'd hoped, what with university in the way and everything. The Walking Dead and Journey are two notable omissions; the former is receiving far too much praise and hype for me to enjoy personally right now, I highly suspect that could be my 2013's 2012 Game of the Year.

List items

  • A true phenomenon. Between its cryptography, artstyle and captivating soundtrack; there wasn't a second of Fez that didn't have me by the heart. Fez was a game that spoke to me and everything that I am, in a way that most game's--naturally--don't

  • I was not expecting to be so engrossed in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Turn based strategy is largely not my thing outside of 4X games, but there was something incredible about it here. Perhaps it was simply just the right vessel for the job, that coupled with it being incredibly savage and exciting, and everything in-between.

  • A gem now shrouded in misfortune. Reckoning featured an exquisitely designed and lovingly crafted world that was overlooked by many. Its artstyle was not everyone's 'cup of tea' hell it's very nearly not mine, but exploring the faelands of Amalur was easily one of the best experiences I had in 2012. Oh and hey the combat was pretty good too.

  • Whenever someone mentions 'games as art' I'll point to this game.

  • Ok so look, I'm one of those guy's that was not enraged by the time it was over, y'know, that 1% of people. Regardless, Mass Effect 3 was a surreal and poignant not-so-final goodbye, tarnished by it's post DLC and endings debacle. But, I'll never forget the experience I had with the game that I played.

  • Yeah, it's not Guild Wars. It IS however, a wonderful, wonderful step in the right direction for MMO's as a genre. It solves so many of the problems perpetuated by the WoW imitators of years gone by. It has some problems still, but the exploration, which takes a surprising--and somewhat alarming--priority, is excellent. Save for a few boring areas. With time Guild Wars 2 could become something incredible. Here's to hoping.

  • I played the first two Max Payne games. I liked them, but I hold no deep reverence for them, which would explain why I had such an easy time enjoying the hell out of Max Payne 3. And boy did I enjoy it...And shout abuse at it, but lets not talk about that part.

  • Going into Sleeping Dogs I was not expecting much. Instead I got an incredibly satisfying and thrilling action adventure that didn't quite reach those GTA levels despite its best efforts. But whatever; it plays significantly better than those games. I enjoyed the story despite Wei's handling of his love interests, that I find simultaneously unbelievable and believable at the same time, sadly.

  • I'm one of those Far Cry 2 people. So Far Cry 3 initially threw me for the loop, and I wasn't getting why it was receiving such large praise even though Far Cry 2 featured a lot of the same, exciting, things. Eventually I learned to enjoy it for what it was, despite its bizarre-at-times game design. I am of course sad its story did not go where I thought it could have. It felt like at every single turn it could have gone a million different ways...but alas.

  • Cars. Vroom. I...have nothing to say really. Don't...*sigh* I'll tell you one thing though! It's the first Forza game I like and that's an achievement! Granted it's because it's open road racing but you get what I mean. I hope.
