I use a Thrustmaster T-16000M and love it. I play IL-2 Sturmovik with it and it works great. A few parts can be switched around for left-handed fliers too, which is a pretty cool feature in my book.
If you're looking for books about the regular-ass Imperial Guardsmen of 40K, I'd suggest checking out the Gaunt's Ghosts series. If you're interested in some pre-41st millennium stuff, you could check out the Horus Heresy series.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - An interesting take in the mecha genre. Psychological, with a big tonal shift about halfway through. If you watch this series, make sure to watch the director's cut versions of episodes 20 - 24, as well as the movie End of Evangelion.
Monster - A very slow burn of an anime, but it's really something else. A great mystery/thriller. Can be streamed on Hulu.
Samurai Champloo - Hip hop samurai with a soundtrack by Nujabes? Hell to the yes! Can be streamed on Netflix.
Tiger & Bunny - Heavily inspired by comic books, this is the best superhero anime around. Can be streamed on Hulu.
Cowboy Bebop - A classic, hands down. Can't afford to miss the bebop.
