Game of the Year 2014 Preperation - The Checklist

Game of the Year time is almost upon us, which means I have to organize what games I have left to play this year before I can even THINK about producing a Game of the Year list. If that means not making a list until late next year, so be it! Screw being topical! I'm still working on my Game of the Year list for LAST YEAR.

Well... not so much working on it... it's more accurate to say I just haven't had the time to write it all out. Maybe I should have written that instead of working out this list...

Hmmm.....

Well, regardless... this is less of a list made for the enjoyment of others and more of an organizational and motivational tool for me to play the games from this year I've skipped over. But, hey, maybe you'll enjoy it!

Last Updated: August 2016 (27 games to go)

List items

  • What is it: If you asked most publishers, Bayonetta 2: Electric Boogaloo

Why do I want to play it: Because Bayonetta is the best character action game ever made and this looks even better.

How far have I gotten: 99% sure "Santa" already has this wrapped up and ready for delivery on the 25th.

  • What is it: The spiritual sequel to Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light

Why do I want to play it: Because, so far, it's the best Final Fantasy game I've played since FFIX.

How far have I gotten: Just about to unlock the Red Mage job.

  • What is it: My First JRPG 2

Why do I want to play it: Because Costume Quest was basically the best "My First JRPG" (and I mean that with the most love possible) ever made. Very interesting to see what they do with the formula.

How far have I gotten: Bought it in the "Random November Sale".

  • What is it: Beautiful Paper Mario.

Why do I want to play it: OH MY GOD THIS GAME LOOKS BEAUTIFUL.

How far have I gotten: I want to pick it up on the Wii U or Vita when I can.

  • What is it: Seinfeld/Deadly Premonition/Generic American Crime Drama/Fever Dream/Kinect Nightmare

Why do I want to play it: D4 in the coffee...

How far have I gotten: Ha! I don't even own an Xbox One. But I will promptly borrow one.... as soon as I know anyone who owns one.

  • What is it: Donkey Kong fucking Country, but with the actual good character in the series (Dixie).

Why do I want to play it: I really hated DKCR on the Wii. It was a mess. Having played a way better version of the game though (the 3DS version), I grew to like it more than most of the DKC series has to offer (which really isn't saying much beyond 2 and Jungle Beat). Still, would like to see what Retro did with the formula now that's it's back on consoles and has some actual, functional controls.

How far have I gotten: Haven't bought it yet.

  • What is it: Fantasy Civilization from the makers of Sci-Fi Civilization. No, not that one. The other one.

Why do I want to play it: Bayond Earth needs some time in the oven until it'll be as good as Civ 5. Might as well poke around with something similar, but new.

How far have I gotten: Bought it in the "Random November Sale".

  • What is it: A puzzle game about the friendship between a goat and a mouse.

Why do I want to play it: I fucking love the first Escape Goat. An under-appreciated classic of the past generation. Even months after its release, I'm ecstatic to know there is more out there for me to play.

How far have I gotten: Bought it in the "Random November Sale".

  • What is it: I don't know.

Why do I want to play it: Because PerfidiousSinn told me to.

How far have I gotten: Haven't even looked up how much it is.

  • What is it: A puzzle game masked as a JRPG in fast forward.

Why do I want to play it: I really enjoyed the first game. Don't know if enough has changed to justify sinking of ton of time into. We'll see, I guess.

How far have I gotten: Bought it in the "Random November Sale".

  • What is it: Snake riding simulator.

Why do I want to play it: Looks like a good game to relax to.

How far have I gotten: Haven't downloaded it. Can't remember if that Vita version ever happened.

  • What is it: A Soccer JRPG.

Why do I want to play it: It looks kinda fun? Always down for a twist on the JRPG format.

How far have I gotten: I bought and downloaded it.

  • What is it: Pixel's new game.

Why do I want to play it: Cave Story is pretty damn high up there on my favourite games ever list. Really want to see what Pixel can do next.

How far have I gotten: Haven't bought it yet.

  • What is it: Mario Golf v.1.2

Why do I want to play it: Hey, Mario Golf is a pretty fun time. And they haven't made one of those in a long time.

How far have I gotten: Still in the shrink wrap.

  • What is it: Normal Dad Simulator

Why do I want to play it: Because there aren't enough wacky games out there and we need more games like this in this industry.

How far have I gotten: I have it, but I want to finally beat the original first. You know, so I can catch-up on that story.

  • What is it: A beautiful mix of Persona and Etrian Odyssey mechanics with a goofy art style and all your favourite characters.

Why do I want to play it: The logo looks like the Scooby Doo: Where Are You? logo.

How far have I gotten: Woke up early the day it came out to grab it when the stores opened. Unfortunately haven't had the same time to PLAY it.

  • What is it: The name speaks for itself.

Why do I want to play it: Because, despite hearing middling things, I want to play it for myself, even if it ends up being a missed opportunity.

How far have I gotten: I'll probably be able to borrow it from someone?

  • What is it: Dave Lang's Turnover.

Why do I want to play it: Because it's stupid.

How far have I gotten: I really want that Vita version!

  • What is it: It's a new Shantae game. Yes, that should mean something to you.

Why do I want to play it: Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. It's. A. New. Shantae. Game.

How far have I gotten: Played the first hour or so. Really enjoy it so far!

  • What is it: Paper Mario and an entire season of South Park in a blender.

Why do I want to play it: I don't watch enough of South Park, but I've always enjoyed it. Everything I've heard about the game sounds fantastic.

How far have I gotten: Bought it in the "Random November Sale".

  • What is it: Visual Novel about time travel and, to which I have been assured many times but still don't quite believe it, not a dating sim.

Why do I want to play it: Because Zero Escape, Ace Attorney, and Danganronpa have all scratched an itch that hasn't been scratched in many, many years, back before University destroyed my love of reading. I want to curl up in bed or on a couch with a nice gripping story and be hooked from start to finish again.

How far have I gotten: I picked it up when it was half off on some weird anime site and I'm pretty sure my computer now has an anime virus.

  • What is it: Supergiant Games's sophomore album

Why do I want to play it: Exceptionally cool idea. Really like the mechanics of it. Plus I really want to see how Supergiant deals with the impossible expectations I (and everyone else) have after Bastion.

How far have I gotten: Last time I tried playing it on the PC it was, and I quote, "Broken As Fuck". Haven't tried to boot it up in a while though.

  • What is it: World War I adventure game SLASH super depression fun times.

Why do I want to play it: Because there isn't enough hopelessness and despair in my life.

How far have I gotten: Waiting to grab it on Wii U.

  • What is it: Scavenging game with stealth elements

Why do I want to play it: I hate stealth, but the rest of the game looks interesting enough.

How far have I gotten: N/A

  • What is it: An exceptionally fun to play MMO.

Why do I want to play it: The moment-to-moment combat is exceptional and sunk its hooks in deep when I played in the Beta. Quest design left something to be desired, but maybe they'll have fleshed that out a bit more by the time I get around to it.

How far have I gotten: Played a few characters passed the god-awful opening section. Fell in love with the Spellslinger, but couldn't commit to playing the game once school started.

  • What is it: A Roguelike where money is your items, weapon, and armor.

Why do I want to play it: It was the best game I played at PAX Prime. By far.

How far have I gotten: Bought it in the "Random November Sale".

    Edit: Played enough!

  • What is it: A Sonic fan game (No, really, that's what the project started as).

    Edit: Complete!

Why do I want to play it: Because it's not like there will be good ACTUAL sonic games coming out anytime soon.

How far have I gotten: Gathering dust in my steam library.

  • What is it: A Kirby game.

Why do I want to play it: It's an actually good Kirby game.

How far have I gotten: Haven't bought it yet.

    Edit: COMPLETE

  • What is it: Match Three Roguelike

Why do I want to play it: Triple Town is one of my favourite games in the match 3 puzzle subgenre. Love to see what Spry Fox can do with a deeper experience.

How far have I gotten: Still waiting on that Vita version...

    Edit: Complete!

  • What is it: Mega Man 2 without a gun.

Why do I want to play it: Because it's a lot of fun and I should really, really beat it.

How far have I gotten: I think it was Treasure Knight that I beat last?

    Edit: Complete!

  • What is it: A puzzle game with brief bits of Contra between planning your move.

    Edit: Complete

Why do I want to play it: I've actually played a lot of it already and I think I like it because it's actually not a super fast paced action game. It's more deliberate, with more planning involved, and I like that aspect a lot.

How far have I gotten: I have a party member made of poop, a man in a bathrobe, a dinosaur, and a party member that is a barely clothed Merlin.

  • What is it: A WoW Expansion that is a Warcraft 1 era lord nerd's fantasy.

    EDIT: Complete!

Why do I want to play it: I am that nerd.

How far have I gotten: I haven't even played Mist of Pandaria yet. This is gonna have to wait until summer rolls around.
