I will buy crysis 2 when they give us dx11 (Maybe)

Crysis 2 and cryengine have been advertised and talked about for months and months. They kept saying it would benefit from being on consoles because it gets a bigger budget and stuff... But that lack of dx10 and 11 on release is inexcusable.
After reading Jeff's review and quicklooks I wanted to buy it but I won't until they give us dx11 and even then....
How good is the dx11 support really going to be for a game that was released as dx9? They obviously put most of there effort into the dx9 version.
I am not disappointed with the gameplay (I haven't played it but what I have heard about it seems good and improved a bit), I am disappointed with the support.
I would never of imagined after finishing crysis 1 that years later crysis 2 would be released with a DX version a generation behind...
I care about graphics a lot, especially when it comes to this game. And no matter how good they made it look with dx9 they still held it back by not using 11.

And yes I am a pc gamer complaining about how we were slighted. (People get annoyed by that apparently)
Because this is a case of the game being dragged down by the majority in one way.
Doesn't mean I don't want you console gamers to have fun.

Thanks,
DG

p.s. it also doesn't help that I feel like I was lied to by marketing/people making the game for a year or so. I am a bit sensitive to that.

Why does the version of DirectX it uses matter as long as it looks great? This seems like bitching for the sake of bitching. And as for being lied to. I have never seen a single interview or anything of the sort that has said "we will be supporting DirectX 11".

I can understand not buying the game because it's not good, but not buying it because it doesn't use the newest DX version? That's just silly.

There's been a lot of hate across the internet about the lack of DX11 support for Crysis 2 at launch and while I can somewhat understand the rationale behind it (if you got yourself a Quad-SLI/CrossfireX rig in anticipation of Crysis 2, yeah you probably aren't too happy about it's use of DX9), ultimately I don't care as long as the game looks good and runs well. Honestly, just because a game uses DX11 doesn't mean it'll necessarily look better. Metro 2033 and Battlefield 2 are both games with native DX11 support, yet I prefer Crysis 2 in the graphical department (I'm not denying that Metro 2033 in DX11 mode is more technically impressive, but that doesn't mean the overall result is more aesthetically impressive). In fact, I'm pretty impressed at how much Crytek was able to get out of a 7 year old API and how well it runs on relatively mid-end hardware. Obviously Cryengine 3 is a DX11 engine and it probably is capable of much more than what they've shown in Crysis 2, but Crytek has said from the beginning that Crysis 2 was going to be multiplatform and that they're focus with Crysis 2 was optimization, not graphical supremacy (i.e. Crysis Warhead is much more stressful on PC hardware than Crysis 2 is)

ironically, when Crysis 1 came out, people where also bitching, but about the opposite: not even the best rigs around could play the game at max settings. So either way, people are going to complain.

You wants some minor lighting improvements and tessellation to make you enjoy playing the game more? Really? You weren't lied to. The engine supports DX11. There's been a lot of crossover between Crsis 2 and CryEngine 3 coverage so it's understandable.

To think out of all these years DirectX 9 still holds up, I remember my first Dx9 video card, the ATI Radeon 9700 pro playing Unreal Tournament 2001, so yeah... And like the others said, really, what will DX11 do besides add more bumps and ridges? Crysis 2 looks flippin amazing already.

I hope they add dx10 with the patch dx11 patch but really I care about the sandbox editor  much more I want them to release that I loved messing around with it in Crysis.

Well, DX11 should bring performance improvements as anything done with DX9 or DX10 should run faster in DX11. As for extra features, I'm thinking along the lines of Diffusive Depth of Field and Tessellation (i.e. these are the types of features we've seen in DX11 titles like Metro 2033 or Dragon Age II).

Just buy it so they can make a Crysis 3 that's better. If I really didn't care about a Crysis franchise, I would say, why buy it at all? Crysis 2 is a huge disappointment (aside from its sound effects and music), then again, I haven't played it on PC. The voice acting, characters, and story are all bad or bleh. The shooting is fun, but you'll probably use the same guns the whole game since any other gun is either there for experimentation, or they're just your ordinary heavy weapons that can't be carried through.

No one has said it, since I've heard otherwise, but Crysis 2 (on the 360) looks like shit most of the time, with its character models, haze like grain effect (though I think there's something wrong with my copy), and some pop in, then there's the AI that walk in circles sometimes, and the only thing that's gotten right is its lighting. Just buy it already, why would you wait just because of some graphical options? Wouldn't it be better to look at it how it is now, then look back and say "Wow, that was crap compared to this!" or something like that.

If they patch in dx11 there better be real improvements.
They obviously made this game with dx9 in mind while making it look like it would be the next gen dx11 game we wanted.

I'm in this very strange situation now, that I have a computer to run Crysis 2 but I'm actually juggling the idea of getting it for consoles.
I like achievements, but even without the achievements, the difference between the versions look minimal. I'm waiting for the DX11 patch too, primarily because I want to see how big of a difference it makes.

There is no UT2001. The first came out 1999 and the next in 2003.
And yeah, those cards had dx9, but if a game actually used it, you could barely run it. Its prime came many years later.
Still, 2002 and still works in 2011. Pretty good job by those guys apparently.

As someone who has played Crysis 2 on PC on the "Extreme" settings, it definitely looks significantly better than the 360 version (compared to the 720p footage I've seen of the 360 version) and also runs much smoother. The inconsistent framerate on the 360 version definitely put me off.

@Havox: I wanted it to take advantage of DX11's api but instead they just made a game that an 8800gt can play comfortably... or a xbox360.
It looks good, but it doesn't look great. Crysis was a great looking game and still is, this game will be forgotten well before 4 years.

And my problem was they kept talking about how this dx11 capable engine is gonna make this amazing game with even better graphics then the first and so on.
And then they release a game that is dx9 and they are patching dx11 into it...

Not a good thing.

Crysis 2 still looks better than Crysis 1 even though it's only DX9.
I'd be more annoyed at the fact that you only get 3 presets for graphics and can't customize each specific feature like you can with all other PC games.

There's nothing unusable about dx11. Civilization V used the adaptive tessellation within DX11 for their world map for christs sake. Metro 2033 has had core dx11 features for a year now (came out in march 2010). Please do some research on what DX11 actually does instead of saying it crashes every 2 mins. There's a difference between dx11 and lazy developers.

The thing that pisses me off about that it's the fact that, had it not been released for consoles, it would most likely have been released with DX11 and much superior graphics, which might've caused an impact on the industry and the gaming community with a magnitude similar to the one the first game had.

I mean one of the first things that fucking said was that people should not be concerned about the technical advancement of the game not being reduced on the PC, as they had two separate teams working on it. Bullshit. If that's the case then why wasn't Crysis 2 built to support DX10 when its predecessor already did?

What pisses me off is seeing console gaming being a cancer on PC gaming, by affecting the what should be the zenith of what PC technology can offer.

There you go. Phew.

You're speaking in hypotheticals. What are these theoretical graphics that you are missing? Crysis 2 looks incredible, I'd have to say the best looking game available. I'm pretty sure the only reason you guys are upset is because it doesn't kill your system like Crysis 1 did. If it did, it wouldn't matter what DX version this game was running.

I bet if Crysis 2 couldn't muster 30 FPS at 1920x1080 at Max settings no one would be complaining right now.

@dezvous: Well, the implication is that if they did focus on the graphics so much so that it only ran at 30fps on the highest end systems (like they did with Crysis 1), then we could be seeing some truly mind-blowing graphics. The graphics certainly aren't bad, but they're in no way as impressive relative to the rest of the market as Crysis 1 was. Even Metro 2033 trumps Crysis 2 in visuals and that came out a year ago. What is impressive though is that the game is hella optimized (runs as well as UE3, looks better), but that makes a less obvious impression compared to just flat-out visuals.

They have an extra 16 milliseconds with DX11, which means they could practically double the current graphics fidelity with little to no performance hit. I think a lot of people are just frustrated that they didn't do it in the first place, which would be the obvious choice for developing on PC, but they had to hold the game back for consoles.

The PC market is fine. Consoles are becoming more and more like PC's everyday. Console games and consoles themselves just continue to get more complex.

Going all end of the world on PC gaming or Crytek is pretty silly. Embrace change and realize PC gaming is going to be just fine. This is how you turn into close-minded curmudgeonly old people.

I'll say again, I think this was a huge learning experience, an experiment even, for Crytek. Going forward I think they'll revert back to a heavier focus on pushing the PC side of things now that they've gotten a handle on working on consoles. They've laid the groundwork for the consoles, that's the hardest part. They've freed up time in the future to focus more on both and I'm sure Crytek will grow because of the success of Crysis 2. That can only lead to what we want.
