In no particular order, and using only 1 game per franchise, there are my top 10 of the last decade:

  • Persona 4
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • Uncharted 2
  • The Last of Us
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Bioshock
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Batman: Arkham City

Honorable Mentions that didn't quite make the cut:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • inFamous
  • Halo 3
  • Asura's Wrath
  • Alan Wake
  • Portal 2
  • Street Fighter 4
  • Zelda: Link Between Worlds
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Titanfall 2
  • The Last Guardian

Games I've yet to play or haven't beaten yet that could fit the list someday:

  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Resident Evil 7
  • Witcher 3
  • Catherine
  • Persona 5 (if it's better then 4, it would replace it).

I'll likely still play it at some point, but I'm in no rush. This may seem kinda harsh, but as much as I LOVE Mass Effect (even 3, and the series as a whole was easily my favorite franchise of the last generation along with Uncharted), with how many awesome game's that have come out over the last few months and how so many of them I'm behind on, I'm a little relived that we finally have a AAA game that I don't need to rush out and play immediately, though it does bum me out that it had to be with one of my favorite franchises. Honestly, if nothing else, seeing all the footage and the reviews has made me just want to go back and replay the original trilogy again because it's been enough time since I've played all three of them and there's still plenty of fresh ways for me to experience them by doing choices I didn't make before. I'll likely wait until there's a sale for Andromeda or the price goes down plus wait 'till they patch it, there's too many awesome games right now for me to run out and buy a alright, if not mediocre at best game, especially when I still don't have a Switch with Breath of the Wild yet and haven't even finished Witcher 3, just not what I need right now.

I will also say I LOVE Super Mario Sunshine, it isn't perfect, as some of objectives are downright annoying, and the camera can be a pain sometimes, but it's still a lot of fun, and I like how organic most of the levels are, and find almost everything about the game charming as hell.

I actually really love Star Fox Adventures and Assault. I totally understand the issues people had with them, with Adventures literally being a game that was forced to have Star Fox characters slapped on it at the request of Miyamoto (was originally Dinosaur Planet, and the gameplay was almost indentical). For what it is, it's a very well made game, easily one of the better Zelda clones I've ever played, and visually looked amazing at the time. It's also probably the last game Rare made that I really got into, as their Xbox era stuff did nothing for me, so I look at it as Rare's swan song for Nintendo. (sorry Nuts & Bolts and Viva-Pinata fans). As for Star Fox Assault, I really didn't mind the on-ground missions and thought the game was a lot of fun, though the lack of branching paths was kinda of a bummer at the time.

Resident Evil 5 gets a lot of hate these days, not to the same level as 6, sure, but it was definitely a turning point for the series that left a bad taste in people's mouth's. While the lack of puzzle's and tedium of dealing with Sheva's inventory was annoying, and the scariness was thrown out almost completely, I really loved the game as a whole, it's definitely not some masterpiece the same way I would classify RE 1, 2 and 4 as, but a totally fun and well-made game that I thought closed off the Wesker storyline in an entertaining, albeit ridiculous in a fun, big-budget B-movie kind of way.

Kid Icarus: Uprising was surprisingly fun with really great humor and visuals. As someone who has no nostalgia for the original Kid Icarus, I got really into it, but can totally see why others hated it. It was also a bad portable game.

I loved Twilight Princess and find it has some of the best dungeons, boss fights, and characters of any Zelda game, even if I agree with others that the Wolf Link stuff isn't great, I find everything else about the game awesome, even if it does play it a little too safe in terms of pushing the Zelda series forward. I also really like Skyward Sword, though am a little bit more mixed on Skyward Sword as a whole despite liking it overall (FUCK FI!!!).

Metal Gear Solid 4, Mass Effect 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, L.A. Noire and Bioshock Infinite are all games that were critically well-recieved but are super contentious and divisive these days for various reasons, yet I love ALL 5 of them immensely and would easily rank all of them among my favorite games of all-time.

Last but not least, I'm one of those weirdo's who LOVES Shenmue, even in spite of the recent endurance run. I totally understand the issues people have with it, and I definitely think it's not an easy game to go back to today unless you get swept up in its ambition and let yourself get immersed in its weirdness and embrace all of its miniutiae and find it's mundane qualities charming, but I love it just the same, and CANNOT WAIT for Shenmue 3.

For what it's worth, the Super Replay that Game Informer did of Shenmue was really good, and unlike Giant Bom they really enjoyed the game, and they're doing the 2nd one right now, I'll definitely be curious how Vinny would feel about Shenmue 2 since the waiting and killing time aspect of the first game is no longer a factor, and that was BY FAR the thing he hated most about the game, I also generally think the storyline and characters are better written in 2, even if Ryo is still stoic to a fault, we shall see.

Since I posted my thoughts on the first game, I figured it only natural to post my thoughts on the second game as well. BTW, if you haven't read my review on the first game yet, check it out here (http://www.giantbomb.com/shenmue/3025-602/forums/it-s-2015-and-i-finished-shenmue-for-the-first-tim-1768579/#10).

I actually finished Shenmue 2 using the European Dreamcast version I imported because while I didn't mind the voice acting for the main characters and found the voice acting for the random NPCs to be fun in a so bad it's good sorta way, I really wanted to experience the game how it was originally meant to be told and wow, they really did go above and beyond to make Shenmue 2 feel much more epic in scope then the first game.

A few things I will say about Shenmue 2 is for one, their rendition of 80s Hong Kong is every bit as striking as Yokosuka is, though missing the cool "lived-in" feel that the first game has, though what it lost their it made up for in scope and lost NOTHING in terms of detail, though I found Kowloon to be pretty boring, they still put a lot of effort into it, but it's supposed to look rundown there wasn't much they could've done I guess, though it makes up for it with how fucking awesome the set piece moments are there. Also, the new characters were overall a lot better then the first games cast, with Ren easily being my favorite, though I did miss the goofy comic-relief characters like Tom and Goro.

The fact that they made making money a big part of the game in this one was cool, and I'm happy they finally allowed you to sell off any capsule toys you didn't want, plus the new betting games were cool though I was bummed out that their were only 2 part-time jobs, and while I did like lucky-hit, the QTE box-lifting was a poor substitute for the forklift job from the first game. Found the story to be pretty amazing, and the last 5 hours in the game especially great, with the last 2 being some of the most emotionally investing and beautifully done scenes I've experienced since I first played Shadow of the Colossus. Will be curious how far down the rabbit hole they go with what they ended on for the end of this game in Shenmue 3. The addition of a wait function was a great addition, though I still weirdly admired waiting for bars to open or stores to open or whatever in the first game, though understand why they had to add it, and it was warmly welcomed.

Overall I would say Shenmue 2 is an overall better game then the first, so of course I loved it, though there were still some aspects in the first game I missed as mentioned before, plus I missed taking care of a kitten and getting winning cans in the vending machines God DAMMIT!!!

The best thing SEGA has done in recent years is allow Yu Suzuki permission to have the Shenmue license so he can FINALLY make Shenmue 3 rather than hold it hostage like Capcom is doing with Mega Man and Inafune or Konami with Castlevania. That being said, even still, FUCK SEGA!!!

I only just played Shenmue for the first time this past year and loved it, in fact, I posted my thoughts on it here http://www.giantbomb.com/shenmue/3025-602/forums/it-s-2015-and-i-finished-shenmue-for-the-first-tim-1768579/#10. Yes, there is quite a few things about Shenmue that doesn't age well (voice acting, movement controls a bit stiff), but there's quite a lot of charm in those games as well, and that first game was really ahead of its time in a lot of ways, being the precursor to every urban sandbox game that would come after it, as well as the attention to detail and how every single NPC in that game is unique and has their own daily lives that will change day to day, and the way the weather patterns change randomly and can cause the entire world to be covered in snow at random is really cool and is something you don't seen in most games. It is not a game for everyone though, and I think you're enjoyment with Shenmue will be based on what you're thoughts are on games like Heavy Rain or L.A. Noire. It's very slow paced, but is very unique to this day and has a lot of heart, I'd recommend at least giving it a chance, just know going in that if you're expecting a pure action game, you're going to hate it, it's more of an immersive life simulator with some action sprinkled in then it is a pure action style open world game.

I finished the original Shenmue for the first time just this past year and loved it. If you're interested in hearing thoughts about it from a new fan, check out this post I made in the forums a few months back. http://www.giantbomb.com/shenmue/3025-602/forums/it-s-2015-and-i-finished-shenmue-for-the-first-tim-1768579/#7

On the subject, I'm very happy this is finally happening, both as a new fan and as someone who wants fans of unfinished franchises to finally get the closure they deserve. The only real drawback I see from this is that it made me think of Ryan again, and wondered what he'd be thinking if he lived to see Shenmue 3 get announced. Obviously, he didn't think Shenmue was a great game, but he saw that the game had heart, and I would've loved to know what he thought about all of this.
