GOTY 2011

What a fantastic year it has been in gaming and so many games I am missing from this list - but I forced myself to only choose 10 even if it makes me die a little inside when I remember some of the titles I am leaving from this list - still here it is; my top ten list for what I believe to be the most consistent year in gaming:

List items

  • This is a masterpiece and most unexpectedly it beat Ocarina of Time as my favourite Zelda title becoming my second favourite game of all time. Some of my greatest memories this year are with this game. The level design is the best it has ever been in a Zelda game and the versatility of items is outstanding. I got this game a day early and started plying, and was brought in so much that it has become the first game I have ever completed to 100% without looking anything up, this feeling for completion is a rare thing for anything to make me feel - and even rarer to make me actually do it. It is By far my favourite game of this year, and while I may look back later and take it out of my favourite ever games - it will always remain a masterpiece in my eyes and my only regret is that I haven't been able to finish the Hero Mode yet from forcing myself away to play other games and do work.

  • I completed Portal 2 in one sitting staying awake through an entire weekend while the rest of my family went to New York, and it was the best decision I made all year. The original didn't grab me as I played it a while after it came out and missed the chance to play and see the metamorphosis it because from a time waster in a classic, but Portal 2 managed to do it when I expected it to be so great. It's crazy how fantastic this game is and stands up as the game that made this year becoming the first year ever to get more than one game in my top -ten-games-of-all-time list. This is a puzzle game with substance, one with enough challenge but the spark to see everything is possible to complete and thus propelled me to not stop for anything.

  • I watched a friend play Shadow of the Colossus when it came out, and the stunted frames made me lose the want to force through it myself. And Ico never grabbed me, its demo being the worst that I have ever played. So I don't know why I got it this year, I had to chose between this or Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and man am I thankful I picked it. I fell in love with Ico, which I now believe to be one of the greatest pieces of story telling in any medium and Shadow of the Colossus is spectacular too. I cannot say how much of a great deal this was, this collection actually had a Trophy that made me look at Ico differently and love it even more. The under 2 hours achievement made me see past how wonderful a one time game it is, but how fantastic the level design is to truly reward looking out for shortcuts. These are the best remakes I have ever seen; now I just hope other games are treated with as much care and attention as this. (Hear that Square Enix, I will never forgive you if you screw up the Final Fantasy X remake!)

  • I have spent over 100 hours with Dark Souls and barely half way through - and I am ok with that. I will almost definitely never finish this game but the time I had with it is so precious to me I don't care. The combat in Dark Souls is the best I have ever seen in any action RPG. This is the first hardcore action RPG to make me care about the story and the combat and to give me so much enjoyment from defeating enemies. While I never felt the idea of the game being impossible (instead revelling in knowing all I have to do is be patient and see the way through) I did get overloaded with rage a few times, especially with the traps and knockback attacks falling off the edge - which is the worst. Yet looking back I am happy they happened, and all they did was make me determined to keep going.

  • It breaks my heart any time someone asks what my favourite Wii game of the year is and I have to reply Skyward Sword. I feel like I am cheating out Xenoblade Chronicles which is my second favourite for the Wii's entire lifetime. I got it because I needed a Classic Controller Pro and was feeling a bit down on the lack of JRPG's, and man did it show me for taking it so lightly. While lots of other JRPG's seriously outclass it, it was still a beautiful game with some quite interesting additions to the series and I am truly sorry America has to wait to long for it.

  • My most underrated game of the year. The 3DS launch suppressed this game to the point where hardly anyone knows it came out this year, but I did and I know it is a must-own DS title. While it doesn't reach the same level of its predecessor, it does follow the same footprints and continue to take the Zelda formula and truly utilize the item/brush strokes together as useful abilities in sync. What a forgotten gem.

  • I got Mario Kart 7 for Christmas; I asked or it to waste time when I can't get to a console but I ended up getting gold in every event in every difficulty not because it was easy but because it was so much fun despite the difficult higher leagues (damn you mirror rainbow road). This is the first in the series I truly believe has a great core, and finally mixed the interesting (but what wasn't fun for me) parts of the DS version with the crazy console versions - this is my definitive Mario Kart game, and that truly surprised me.

  • Full discloser, I have not played Bastion other than the demo but man did I love it. The combat is perfect, the aesthetic is stunning and I want to play it so bad. From what I played and have seen from others playing it I know it deserves at least this spot on my list, and when I finally get the chance to I will truly give it the time it deserves and I hope it can shoot even higher on my list.

  • Skyrim is an amazing achievement and someone can have a really great time with it, and so did I. Yet I have some problems that stop it going higher. First I have the PS3 version and have to say haven't experienced any really back playability or glitches so far (that could definitely change). My problem instead arises form the inconsistent levelling system: after pushing through blacksmithing and pick pocketing really enjoying it I levelled up to a point where I kept being attacked by dragons (one time getting attacked by 4, one after the other in the same place, forced to save and reload over and over) but my other stats were not on the same level, my problem is I had the Thief stone but sneak was still around 30 so if that was higher I could take them out with archery, but instead it became one of the most annoying gaming experiences of the year. I do wish that they took an extra 6 months of something to iron them out and change it so I don't always fight the same final dungeon enemy over and over but what a damn game it is. This is still a spectacular achievement and the first Bethesda game to truly bring me in and being forced to push my fighting levels a bit to compensate is a small problem in comparison so it is on my list, just could have had a little more time in development. Still love it though (even if Faendal left no where to be seen with all my potions and my dwarven armour…DAMN YOU FAENDAL?!)

  • This is my favourite ever Sonic game (even if Sonic Adventure 2 battle has my favourite memories). It finally shows they were right with going to 3D so long ago, and that they can recreate the original 2D design. The level design in this is a long time coming (with multiple routes in not only the 2D one but also the modern sonic levels). My only gripe is how short it is, and how I am not really into plat-formers any more, but what a fantastic title. I though Sonic 4 was the closest they would ever get to their original great level design, but Sonic Generations makes that look like a sub-par fan-made Little Big Planet creation. What a fantastic surprise, if Sonic team can keep this up I may like Sonic more than Mario again.
