@machofantastico: That's hilarious. It shows the careful thought and clear-headed planning that went into the halo and in sexing up F1 in general.

Motogp looks like it will be very close this year, judging by Qatar. Don't forget it's only 40 days odd until the TT. Someone's also thrown up a load of full-length F1 (Jim Rosenthal era) on Youtube from the 1990s, so it's not all bad.

Chess is awful. There's no meaningful progression. There are no upgrades, skins or hats. There is absolutely no single player at all. The graphics are blocky and the player map is uninteresting. The story, what there is of it, is just some old medieval clap-trap.

@mike: What was your guild rank and do you know what the max rank was? Is the colour of the animals you catch the only difference in higher ranked missions?

I'm curious about the game, so I watched this video:

Loading Video...

It discusses progression and talks about what happens while you rank up with the 3 guilds, when new mission types open up with rank. When you are maxed out with the three guilds, you become a "Pirate Legend" and gain access to the "legendary Pirate Hideout" (according to the video). In this exclusive end-game area, there will be access to "legendary voyages" and clues to unlock the secrets of "Athena's Fortune". That seems like end-game content to me. So that's scaling mission types with rank progression and an end-game content area.

The video also suggests that people create their own emergent gameplay by being piratical with opposing players or forming alliances with them, which is something you'd have to do for yourself, given imagination.

I wonder if the comments in this thread and the video can both be true. I'm still intrigued enough to give it a go.

I just saw my first stadium super trucks this week. What a race format!

I'll be watching the F1 season under protest, with a strip of electrical tape running down the middle of my TV screen.

Worryingly (for me), I don't recognise F1 at all from that official video.

@shindig: I was hoping Stoner would return this year to knock Marquez off his perch. Do you know why 9 out of the 24 are Spanish?

Speedy recovery!

I think these run on low specs (and are great games for a cerebral senior):

  • Magnum Opus
  • Infinifactory
  • Factorio
  • Hacknet
  • Grey Goo
  • Spelunky
  • Prison Architect
  • Spacechem
  • FTL
  • Wargame Red Dragon
  • 8-bit Armies
  • Cold Waters

I had a peak at the career after learning Hertfordshire (where I live - looks nothing like it!) and Triangle. My assumption is that you have to win all the races, else you'll have no money to buy better bikes. I then got to a race at an unknown track - since sometimes it tells you the track and sometimes not in those emails... I got into the race, then thought I'd back out and time trial against my ghosts, rather than rub along with the opposition. Of course, when I got back in, the race was lost and time had moved on. Looks like another re-start is on the cards - I wouldn't mind so much, but it takes ages to change all the rider colours to black! I really hope they do change the career progression - it seems completely half-baked.

EDIT - turns out you can see the career mode upcoming tracks in the calendar screen of the campaign.

4 laps is pretty gruelling - it takes me over 1hr 20 for that. I did my first 4 lap supersports race last night also, but against the CPU. Hand cramps aside, I managed to come in miles ahead of easy competition. I'm sub 20 minute per lap high scores on superbike and supersports now - but I don't think I can improve much more - I'm too scared to turn off the racing line.

I can forgive the shoddy career and the odd bike categories because riding around the TT circuit, for 20 minutes of concentration at a time, is breath-taking and jaw-dropping.

J.P.S?
J.P.S?

To be frank. I've blown the career out - it seems that you have to beat each event, else lose your money. That means you have to learn all the tracks to win, which means you can't play the whole TT course. The additional wrinkle for me is that you can't see what track you'll be racing next in the emails, so you can't really learn them before-hand. So I've only been time trialling and racing over 1 lap of Snaefell (down to 19:43:9 now) exclusively. I keep coming back to the EBM because of it's smooth torque, good brakes and less frenetic engine sound, as if smooth is better than fast for the best lap times.

I'm waiting for them to change the handling models and career options before I dive in to that side of it. This VVV review discussion video is spot-on for anyone wanting to know more...
