2015 Games

  • Another game that the BEAST folks got me interested. After watching the first episode of the Life Is Strange play-through I was hooked and I new I had to experience it for myself. I loved the high school atmosphere, the intriguing story and time mechanics, and the character interactions. I enjoyed Life Is Strange more than the first season of The Walking Dead, which isn't something I thought could be beat when it came to episodic games. Unlike the GB guys I didn't use the rewind powers as much during conversations. I wanted to see the story play out as quickly as I could, potentially at the expense of the smaller details, but enjoyable none the less. Life Is Strange isn't perfect, but if I could go back and experience this game for the first time again, I would. My favorite game of 2015.

  • I have no experience with the Tomb Raider franchise. Never played the PS1 games, haven't gotten around to playing the reboot from a couple years, although I got it as a Game With Gold. This was a great introduction to the series. The game is fun to play, the weapons are enjoyable, and the story is fine. The good stories come along in the audiologs. There are a few different variations, but they build up this prophet character from different points of time throughout history. They make it worth looking for the collectibles.

  • I didn't actually play Contradiction. I don't know if that should disqualify it from my list this year or not, but watching Vinny, Alex, and Austin explore this small English town with Detective Jenks may have been the most fun I had when it came to games this year. Although the ending wasn't as satisfying as you would hope, the characters really made this game worth experiencing.

  • Batman has become my favorite superhero (by a long shot) over the past 7 or so years. The Dark Knight is my favorite movie and Arkham Asylum is one of the best 5 games from last generation. Although Rocksteady hasn't been able to match their first attempt at a Batman game with the next two, they have been enjoyable none the less. I think this is a good finale for the trilogy. I still think the combat is some of the best in the industry, the voice acting is great, and I even thought the Batmobile was a good addition the open world city. It may be because I didn't play Mordor or Arkham Origins, but the game still felt fresh. If they never make another Batman game I think I would be ok with that. Arkham Knight is a quality send off for a great franchise.

  • Thanks Danny and Drew. Because of you I am now invested in the Formula One world. I've been an off and on fan of NASCAR throughout my life and the thought that I wouldn't watch Jeff Gordon's final season because I was more interested in a different racing series would have been a crazy thought a few years ago. F1 2015 was a great introduction to the franchise for me. It is fun to play and helped get me invested in the racing and strategy in real life. Although I think I have spent more time watching people race in F1 2015, between the Alt-F1 team and some of the Youtube crowd, I have become a better racer in general because of this game. Rather than setting the difficulty to easy and plowing through the field, I now enjoy the experience of just driving in games. I don't have to win, I'm more racing against myself, trying to see if I can take a corner to maximize performance and reduce lap times. It has even bled into my everyday real life driving, I can't stop from thinking how I would weave through the streets as I drive to and from work. I can't wait until next year to both watch and play Formula One.

  • I have never been into soccer. I downright hated it for most of my childhood for no real reason. I have watched a few US matches in the last two world cups, I was actually excited during 2010 when the US managed to tie England, but that has pretty much been the extent of my soccer experience, maybe throw in a little Super Mario Strikers. Rocket League manages to take a sport that I don't follow and make it exciting. Distilling the strategy of Soccer and pairing it with cars has made for an enjoyable experience. I sat down and played online matches for hours, which is something I can't really say I've done much since Modern Warfare 2. I don't think I'll start watching more soccer because of Rocket League, but I will continue to play Rocket league off and on and maybe try to introduce it to some friends.

  • I love baseball. The Show continues to be a great baseball experience that I enjoy playing when I just wan to play something while listening to a podcast or music. Even though I didn't complete a full 162 game season like I did in 14, I still enjoyed my time with The Show.

  • I like skateboarding video games. Tony Hawk 3 on PS1 was my group of friends jam for a while in elementary school. Although I never got into actual skating, whenever one comes out I usually give it a look. After the amazing games that were the Skate series I wasn't sure where skateboarding games would go next. But the first OlliOlli was a great game. It actually got me to play something other than MLB The Show on my Vita. I didn't play nearly as much of the sequel as I did of the original, I still had fun. They have great bite sized levels with a great flow to them. Throw in the quick restart when you screw up and let the fun ensue. Just like Tony Hawk, they added manuals in the sequel to increase scoring and make full level combos possible in every level. OlliOlli make you want to finish a level with 1 long combo and then go right back in and try to beat your high score when you do.
