Best of 2010

I missed quite a few big releases this year (Limbo, Red Dead Redemption, Alan Wake, etc.), but here 's my top 10.

List items

  • Best game of 2010 is all well and good, but this is maybe even my favourite game ever. It is the absolute pinnacle of Bioware's output; there are few games that I've thought about playing twice, fewer still that are RPGs, and fewer STILL that are 35 hours (and counting). It's a game I always wish I had an excuse to go back to, and even now I ache for Mass Effect 3 when I can return to the Normandy with my monkey-faced Sheppard.

  • Possibly the best fighting game of all time. That's all.

  • I haven't played a game this addictive in years.

  • Just an incredibly unique experience. Short, but engrossing, and so many different directions for the story to go in. Absolutely engrossing at all times.

  • A plain, old, good time. It's got tons of faults: lazy cutscenes, a poor shooting system, and an inconsistent level of difficulty, but it makes up for it in sheer ludicrous stunts. It's best played in bite-sized chunk, but it's always fun to go back to Panau for an hour or two of explosions.

  • It's not the best in the series, and it suffers from a slightly disappointing plot that clashes thematically with the rest of the series, but it's got the same tight pacing and visceral action as the other iterations of the series. It's truly a sight to behold, and it has some really intense boss fights. Definitely a good way to waste 10 hours or so.

  • A new challenger in the mixed martial-arts genre, it's system is actually more strategic than the UFC series, and understands the strategic nature of the genre just a bit better. It's got a strong career mode and pulls some really interesting online stuff that hasn't been seen before. If you're the kind of person who likes to watch two ugly dudes beat the holy hell out of each other, this is for you.

  • What can be said? Simply the best rhythm game out there. There is no other.

  • An incredibly unique, engrossing experience. And it's free!

  • A point-and-click game with an intense art style, fantastic music, and most importantly, LOGICAL puzzles. Is that a first for the genre?
